I mostly buy from LQS. I have 2 in my city..one is higher priced than the other. I can usually get fabric for about $10.50/yard but I've purchased it as low as $8.00 at my LQS. Couple,of times a year, my LQS sells old collections by the bolt for $5.00/yard but you have to buy the whole bolt for that. I usually pick up a couple of bolts for backing if a I can find versatile colors. I, also, go to quite a few guild quilt shows and those always offer a huge selection of scrap fabric from their guild members for cheap cheap cheap. Most of my patriotic yardage is from guild shows. I buy on-line from MSQC but I've purchased a lot from quilt stores across the country. We are fortunate to have so many options.

Edited to add: I forgot to mention the awesomeness of M&L in Buena Park. An old grocery story converted to a fabric store on par with House of Hancocks for the west coast. Amazing prices and quality fabric lines like Moda, Kaufman, Windham. It's about 45 min drive for me. Love day trips to M&L...spend all day there...

I've heard several people from England and other places talk about how expensive it is there. Here it's a matter of where you live, the economy and your finances. I don't have a big stash because I can't afford to have one. So the cost affects people depending on where and how they live and what they can afford.

Fabric at quilt shops is anywhere from $10-15 a yard. I do not purchase cheap quality fabric for my quilts, I always purchase them from our local quilt shops. I have found that purchasing a kit from Connecting Threads can actually be cheaper than purchasing fabric for a quilt. Check it out, they also have great sales and $5 shipping. Good luck
