Does anyone know of any herbs that helps Fibromyalgia?

amma 11-15-2009 06:36 PM

I don't know if I am just being extrememly fortunate or if all of the soy products that I have been eating/drinking for menopause are helping with the fibro too...but I have not had a really bad flair up since I increased my soy bean intake.

marsye 11-15-2009 06:39 PM

what soy products are you eating and drinking?

amma 11-15-2009 06:48 PM

I use vanilla soy milk for cereal and to drink, the chocolate is pretty good also...I was NOT pleased with some of the store brands nor would I EVER suggest the plain
I eat the beans in the pod as a vegetable like peas or beans *usually packaged as Edamame*
I tried the soy peanut butter...ended up mixing it half and half...still wasn't as good tasting as the "real" thing LMBO
tofu...I love it marinated/seasoned and then fried
Health food depts have a lot of meat substitutes made of soy that are pretty good also.
Bonus:
Hot flashes almost completely gone
Fibro not bad, considering the time of year and what I have been doing
Soy has a lot of protein
Soy has been said to lower cholestrol
Depending on what you buy and how it is prepared it can be a low calorie food, too.

I am an unoffical natural health/healing person.

try this

1 Tbs apple cider vinegar
1 Tbs honey
stir into 1 cup hot tea

Drink this twice a day. You WILL fell better in about 1-2 week but continue to drink this on a daily basis forever. If you don't like tea mix it in apple juice the best way to do this is take a little apple juice and heat it so the honey disolves then add the rest of the juice and apple cider vinegar.

Let us know how you are in 2 weeks

charismah 11-15-2009 07:40 PM

Another soy product I use is TVP ...textured vegetable protein. I buy it at a local market here and I fool my family with it all the they don't know it isn't meat ...it is healthier for them. 8)

amma 11-15-2009 07:46 PM

YES!!! 8) I forgot to add that one in!!! I added that to soup, sauces, or sometimes 1/2 and 1/2 with hamburger :D :D :D

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 11-15-2009 07:55 PM

We eat the soy "sausage patties" all the time. They are very good and not greasy at all which is a big plus in my book.

The textured vegetable protien Chrismah spoke of is excellent for things like taco meats. Once you toss the spices in no one notices the difference.

DA Mayer 11-15-2009 08:28 PM

FYI If you are on medication for hypothyroidism be sure and check with your pharmacist or dr about using soy.

amma 11-15-2009 08:31 PM

WOW!!! I didn't know that, thanks for the heads up!!! I have family with that, and wouldn't want to cause them any harm if I fix a dish with it...as far as I know, I am the only one who eats soy products....

Moonpi 11-15-2009 11:47 PM

I've tried Sam-E and Rhodiola in the past, but neither one worked for me. I'll bookmark this thread, because it's shaping into a rough winter for mine.

wvdek 11-16-2009 12:05 AM

About two years ago, a Dr. recommended 1500mg of Feverfew a day. It also helps my arthritis. I can only find it at our locally owned pharmacy and it is only about $4.00 a jar.

earthwalker 11-16-2009 12:16 AM

I am a strong advocate of natural, healthy foods and the use of herbs. One very important thing though, if you are taking any prescribed medication at all from your doctor, you must check with either the doctor or a qualified pharmacist before taking any herbal supplements.

Unfortunately, I take many strong prescription drugs daily, as I have a disease called Systemic Lupus. There are many supplements and herbs (and indeed some healthy stuff like alfalfa sprouts!) which I cannot take as this would compromise my health further. I also have to stay out of the sun and not use sunlamps as two of the drugs on my "list" cause hypersensitivity to light. The upside is....no lying by the pool anymore...but I can quilt to my heart's content!

Hope you find something that eases your discomfort and makes you feel better.

trupeach 11-16-2009 02:14 AM

honey and apple cider vinegar are things that wouldn't interfear with any meds as other natural suppliments might. My grandmother was on experimental drugs under the arthritis foundation. She had to sign papers signing her life over to them. the drug they used on her is on the market today. However after her 18 month experiment was complete she started drnking the honey and apple cider vinegar mixture. Granny was amazed within 2 weeks the pain was less and she had more energy. I really suggest to try it. I am sure you have what you need right in your kitchen. You have nothing to lose except the pain and fatigue the fibromyalgia is causing you.

marsye 11-16-2009 04:16 AM

Thanks for all the replies. I have just recently starting taking honey and cinnamon. I'm not much for all the soy food products. What about a soy capsule such as this one? Is this soy or something else?

http://cgi.ebay.com/GNC-NATURAL-BRAN...item5d26e88e90

I'm not very smart when it comes to all of this stuff, I just know I don't like take prescription medicines unless I have to.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 11-16-2009 04:21 AM

Marsye, I agree with you totally on most soy foods. The milk grosses me out and tofu is just not something I can put in my mouth without a gag reflex. That being said, the "sausage" and the "hamburger crumbles" work well. If you don't find another way to increase soy, try the hamburger crumbles first in a spicy dish. Spaghetti, tacos, etc. You might be surprised. If not, chalk it up to experience.

Good luck.

I'm willing to try the sausage and HB but I would still have to cook something else for my hubby because he wouldn't touch it! LOL! It would be so much easier to just take capsules. What about this one from WM? How many MG should you take?

DA Mayer 11-16-2009 04:49 AM

I am not sure of your age but there is a calcium with soy supplement and I took that until I had thyroid medication. I thought it worked well and I think if you ask your Dr or pharmacist the capsule might be ok.

marsye 11-16-2009 04:52 AM

I'm 40 something  I do take synthroid for hypothyroidism so is it ok to take soy? I don't want to go to the doctor!!!

Why can't we all just be healthy

Tink's Mom 11-16-2009 07:14 AM

I've tried the things you all have tried...Didn't seem to help much. Oh well, we just keep trying some more.
I do find that a little exercise helps. Even if you are very fatigued, try to walk around the block. I get pulled around the block by a cute little 10lb. ball of energy. But, we stop at many trees and bushes.....

My Mr. Meat and Potatoes husband wouldn't eat it either if I told him. A girl must have her secrets in life.

I agree that a capsule would be easiest for me, too. I'm watching your thread to see what everyone says. Anything I can wash down with Mt. Dew that will make me feel better is a good thing........within reason!

DA Mayer 11-16-2009 07:35 AM

here is a web site for synthroid take note of interactions and what can decrease effectiveness of the drug. I do have more information on fibromyalgia and I will try to glean some more information for you in the next few days. My advice would be not to take the soy, I was taking it and have hypothyroidism and feel better since I have stopped. I guess I had better paste the web site: http://health.yahoo.com/hormone-medi...d00278a1-drugs

amma 11-16-2009 11:45 AM

When I have bought herbal supplements, I talk to my pharmacist about interactions, doseages, etc... He knows my history and is very knowledgeable about these supplements

 I just got home from a couple of errands, and checked the mail. I was just denied my claim by Social Security Disability. It's bad enough to hurt all the time, but do they have to kick you while your down...

nellebelles 11-16-2009 12:46 PM

Hi Tink's Mom--MOST people are denied the first time they apply for SS disability benefits. It took my husband two years to get his approved. It went all the way to the third appeal, before a judge, before he was approved. What is funny is that once we were before the judge, and the Social Security doctor read off my husband's illnesses, it took all of about 5 minutes for the judge to approve the claim and we were out of there. We had to hire a lawyer who specializes in Social Security claims. The lawyer got a chunk of the back pay, but if the claim hadn't been approved, he would have gotten nothing. I've heard that if you try to do the appeals without an attorney, you probably won't be approved.
I wish you luck in your pursuit!

nativetexan 11-16-2009 12:47 PM

don't even mention SS to me!!! i filed early due to being laid off and learned later i'd already made too much for the year I filed and owed everything they gave me back!!! sigh@@@@

trupeach 11-16-2009 12:52 PM

tinks mom...... i was denied SS i filled 6 months to late. i had more then enough units of work however the doctors that were treating me didn't know it was going to be permanent. even through i had all the records of how long i was being treated that i was indeed disabled 18 months before i filled i was still denied. yes we are living in the USA

Tink's Mom 11-16-2009 01:07 PM

Thanks for your support. I have left a message with a friend to get her husbands disability lawyers #. I had a difficult time getting myself to file for the disability and now....

patricej 11-16-2009 02:20 PM

hypothyroidism is easily managed, so it doesn't interfere with my life. still ... it has it's drawbacks.

tofu ... toe-phooey, if you ask me.

imagine how happy i was to read a few years ago that i have a medical excuse to avoid soy!!!

In California, a patient with Chronic Pain might opt for medical marijuana.

I tried that stuff a couple of times when I was teenager, it was nasty! And yes I inhaled.

As a Vegan, I have to say that since I've adopted this lifestyle the Fibro pain has eased. It has been a journey and not adopted overnight but began as a Vegetarian who decided to take things to the next level. A bit of exercise is also good but you have to remember not to over stress your body with extreme stuff. My philosophy is things in moderation. Good luck in finding what works for you.

tigger5464 11-16-2009 09:41 PM

Please ladies...watch out with the soy based products. Medical research has proven that if there is breast cancer in your family...consuming soy based products can cause your chances of breast cancer to go even higher. My mother had breast cancer a couple of years ago and now I'm really afraid to eat anything that has soy in it. I guess I would rather be safe than sorry at this point since I have cancer on both sides. (My father passed away from colon cancer 8 yrs ago.)
So, ladies please be careful. I would miss all of you

Iluv2quilt 11-17-2009 02:54 AM

I haven't heard of any herbs to help Fibro. I've been diagnosed for about 10 years now. No one has ever offered me a natural healer. They just want to give out pain killers.

research may indicate an increased chance, but that does not necessarily mean there is an absolute direct link between consuming soy and getting BC. there are far too many other factors that may play a role.

same goes for the thyroid studies. same goes for all similar studies.

file the information under "food for thought". each person who wants to make the choice to "soy or not to soy" should read up on the subject and determine how it relates to their individual situation.

howzabout we leave this particular subject out of the general conversation. it's politically charged, has serious moral, ethical and legal ramifications, and can only lead to arguments.

Hey...can ya pass the doobie?

lol
Ok, had to put that in there to lighten the mood. :) :) :)
