We had to drive to Amish country to get clothesline and pulleys. Nobody had them locally.

Now that's a shame.

I must be vintage, too. Allergic to granulated Tide so had to ask a store employee to get me some Cheer detergent so an ambulance wouldn't have to be called & I needed whole milk because the Tide is at the end of the aisle by the dairy case. I had written down exactly what brands & size I wanted to purchase. His reply to my note was, "I'm sorry ma'am, I cannot read cursive." OMGoodness! I still remember my mother writting an "r" that resembled half an "n" with a swoop on the end. I'm probably prehistoric!

That's a rotten shame! They are not teaching cursive writing in schools now-a-days. That is really causing the children to become illiterate. They cannot sign checks or documents anymore. What are the schools teaching in place of cursive writing? Did time shrink while we were not watching? My kids are middle-aged adults now, but if they were children now, I would have home schooled in a heartbeat! Come on, parents of little ones. It really is not too hard to make sure your children will be educated. Their future depends on getting an education. The public school system has let us down. I'm saying this as an old school teacher!

I'm sorry for getting so serious here, but this really bugs me.

I wonder how long it will be before postal carriers refuse mail in cursive!

Actually the post office has asked for many years for people to address things in printed block letters. The machines can't read cursive, either.

When I was growing up, we used slide rules in the advanced math classes. My father was an engineer at Boeing and used various types of them. When my mom passed away and I was going thru all the drawers in my dad's desk I found a bunch of them. My daughter teaches 4th and 5th grade - I was hoping to show the kids the antique calculators - but I could not for the life of me remember how to do it. Nor could I find anyone that knew how. It has been 40 years since I had used one - my dad was adamant that we know how so we could double check the calculator. It didn't occur to me Google it and I let them all go.

On another occasion, I was telling her that there was a time when the only phone we had was not only in the house, but connected to the wall. "Did that mean that you had to stay in all the time?" she asked. Clearly it would be just awful for the modern youngster to miss a phone call wouldn't it?

I nearly spit my coffee all over my ipad when I read this! LOL.... Tell her thta not only did we have to stay in,but we had to stay in the kitchen because thatks where the phone was, and also we had to ask our folks for permission to make a phone call......love this thread....

we had an old phone in the barn where we kept the horses up until about 10 years ago and of course, it wasn’t digital. One day one of the then teenaged barn kids came and asked me how to get the phone to work. He had been pushing on the numbers on the dial, but they weren’t doing anything....He was astounded when I showed him how to “dial” a number!
