Just endured two long flights from Alaska to Hawaii and back and crying babies on both. Could have used some ear plugs but watching movie on DVD player helped.

If you will offer the parent a bit of advice. Ask the flight attendant for a couple of drink glasses and hold them over babies ears during take off and landing. It helps equalize the pressure and they think you are playing a game. You had a couple of great parents to travel with. Good for them

When we flew in to Hawaii back in the 70s on our way to our new post in Guam the flight approach to the airport was very steep. This was a military charter flight for families going to new duty stations. No one alerted us to the fact that chewing gum or using decongestant would be a good idea. There were many screaming little ones on board. Two years later on our way back stateside we were prepared but apparently were also in a different flight pattern as the approach was not as steep either.
