Fruitcake
I must be the only person that likes fruitcake. Where is the best place to buy one? I had the name of a bakery in Sacramento, Ca on my computer but it died, and now have no idea how to locate that bakery.

I love fruitcake! My favourite is a blond fruitcake that my mother used to make at Christmas time.
I second the vote for Collin Street Bakery. Theirs are super yummy.
I used to make them around October and then season them with brandy until Christmas...everyone liked them :)
I only like the homemade kind with pecans, walnuts, cherries and cranberries
I love them, too! but have not had any in years!
My favorite is the one that Assumption Abbey in Missouri makes.
I have made the white fruit cake recipe found every year the day after Thanksgiving in The Tampa Tribune. It is called Mrs. Harvey's fruit cake. I have all the ingred, purchased, and will make it this week. It does not have any booze in it, however, stays wonderfully fresh long long time(if it lasts that long , mine usually has to be rationed out sparingly in order to have any at Christmas.) Will post the recipe later if any one is interested...........

Yep!!! http://www.assumptionabbey.org/fruitcakes.asp the years that I don't make my dark fruitcake...I purchase theirs!! They are wonderful!! They taste like my recipe!! The Monks are so cute! (I hope that is ok to say). I love their recipe!! BUT you have to order ealy! They sell out!! No way would I buy a chemical-infused "fruitcake" that stores stock. Yuck! Gives fruitcake a bad name! All natural ingredients for me! sandy |

A really long time ago, my brother sent me a totally awsome fruitcake. It was from the "Old Mission" company in Calif., so very yummy, blonde and had no citron in it.

same here. My Auntie made one with Brazil nuts and cherries that is the best I ever had.
Only my Mom use to eat fruitcake. I never tried it and know I would not like it. I absolutely will not eat or drink anything with an alcohol anything in it.
Jacie, I would really appreciate having your recipe. :-)
I never had homemade fruitcake and don't like the stuff they sell in the stores I'm sure I would love homemade as I love all the fruits that go in it
I love fruitcake. Collin Street Bakery here in Texas does a great job.

Collin Street Bakery is the best fruitcake maker and the apricot fruitcake is the best, better than the traditional.

I love fruitcake......
Mom made hers with peach nectar. No booze. We'd wrap them in aluminum foil and let them sit awhile. Then about January, any uneaten ones went into the refrigerator. Pull them out around Easter and they tasted like candy...oh what a treat!
Boiled fruit cake is my favourite.
About 30 years ago I gave a fruitcake to a friend who hates it (as a prank). She thought she would get me back by giving to me the following but I was ready for her with another fruitcake. Those two fruitccakes have been going back and forth for about 30 years now. It's become a tradition lol
I love fruitcake. Not the cheap ones from the store, but a good one. A friend of my DH used to bring us one from a bakery in North Carolina I think. Haven't had it in years, since we lost contact with him. I will have to try one of the ones on here.
My grandmother made one that starts with a yellow egg cake, that was crumbled then fruit was added, and the whole thing had brandy poured over it, and allowed to 'age'. Sadly, that is all I remember of the recipe.
I've tried several, but I always return to Collin Street Bakery - it's my favorite and I order one every year. My husband supposedly doesn't like fruitcake but last year he ate half of mine. Should be getting mine in the mail soon.
I ditto Collin Street Bakery. Have bought them for 25 years.
I have a very easy recipe my mother passed down. No alchohol, no baking. Keeps well in the frig, but I have not tried freezing it.
NO BAKE FRUIT CAKE 1 box vanilla wafers, crushed fine 1-10 oz. bag marshmallows 4 cups chopped pecans or other nuts 2 cups raisins 1 cup chopped dates 2 cups currents 2 cans condensed milk In a large pan or bowl, mix fruit with wafers. Add milk, nuts and marshmallows. Mix thoroughly and pack into bread pans and refrigerate. Makes 2-3 pans, depending on size of pan. OPTIONAL Use 5 cups of any combination dried fruit. I like dried pineapple, cherries, raisins, dates and cranberries in it. |
If you have access to Costco, I find theirs to be really good.
My mother made big batches of both light and dark fruitcake and we all helped shell nuts, cut up the candied fruit and we sure helped eat as much of it as we could get our hands on. She made them several months ahead and wrapped them in flour-sack towels and soaked them in wine. Every so often, she would go and sprinkle more wine on the loaves. Mmmmmm!
We love fruitcake at our house. I make one with pecans, candied cherries and pineapple. Now, some years I just make fruitcake cookies with the same ingredients. Both keep very well. Sometimes I use some brandy in them.
We love fruitcake, too! Used Mrs. Harvey's recipe for years thinking it was just my grandmother's. It's the best ever. Now that I am on GF diet, can only eat the home made kinds, but never liked the bought type anyway.
Jacie, I would also like to have your recipe. Please post it for us when you have time.
Thanks |
I would love another recipe, I have 3 small loaves soaking right now. 2 with alcohol and 1 with apple juice. I make mine with all kinds of dried fruit, no candied stuff.
My mother use to make fruit cake when I was a child. I didn't like it back then but I do now. Unfortunately I am the only one in my household who would eat it so I don't every buy or make it. My husband says he likes the cake part not the fruit. I like it all!!
