Will have to show this topic to DH. We've got MOLES! Seems like there are many more than years past!

sueellensc 06-14-2011 08:08 AM

This really works. We used this method. Gummy bears!! Don't touch them with your hand. Use a stick or something like that , that has no human scent on it. Shove them in the holes and paths. Moles will eat them but they can't digest the candy and they die. We frequently get moles comimg from the golf course and this really does work. Good luck

JoyjoyMarie 06-14-2011 08:50 AM

This is an interesting thread, since I'm a gardener. It makes sense to me to get rid of their food source- grubs- and that would get rid of them. However, I can't bear to put out those bug poisons or mole poisons when my cat would eat the poisoned moles and get sick or die then. It's an ongoing struggle for us because of this.

I had a barn/house cat die a couple years ago from undetermined causes, vet said possibly liver failure - I highly suspect that he got into some poison or poisoned animals around here, and that did him in! So maybe the rascal moles are just keeping the grub population in control, and providing snacks to my cat! And I gotta watch my step!

Ragann63 06-14-2011 10:02 AM

The only thing that I know of that actually works (other than the guillotine!!) is castor oil. It is expensive, but they don't like it. If you have a small enough yard, you can just use a spray bottle to cover your grass. They eat the roots and since they don't like the oil, they won't have any food and will move onto...your neighbor's yard!!! This is also a very environmentally friendly cure...won't hurt your yard, children or animals.

misseva 06-14-2011 10:21 AM

Haven't read all the posts but my mother said they move at 12 noon and 6 pm. (I don't know how they know the time, so don't ask.) She would go out in the yard & stand real still and watch for movement. Then stomp the tunnel behind and with a hoe start digging in front of movement. She dug 'em up every time. KILLED 'EM. You have to be brutal.

Well, I hadn't thought of that for moles---it has, however, kept the vampires out of the yard...

grannypat7925 06-14-2011 11:18 AM

Put some exlax in the runs. An old remedy but it really works.

SandraD 06-14-2011 11:52 AM

The moles eat grub worms. You need to put down grub worm killer. Get rid of their food source and you'll get rid of them. I've done this....it works!

cherrio 06-14-2011 12:12 PM

My cat brings a mole up to the back door now n again. QUESTION-if I put down the grub killer is it non toxic to my 4 small dogs? my 2 yorkies are as bad about digging for the moles as the cat is!

this is what I do, too. They eat the gum, can't digest it, bloat up and poof they are done for.

stitchofclass2 06-14-2011 01:26 PM

We used the battery operated post that you stick in the hole. This finally worked and they have been gone, gone, gone!

Up4BigChal 06-14-2011 01:57 PM

If you get rid of the Grubs in your yard, the moles will leave, also if you set a Mole Spring load trap and kill the male females and babies go away only the males dig! Go Figure Huh?

NDQuilts 06-14-2011 02:44 PM

Juicy fruit gum. Just chew it until soft and throw the ball down the holes. Half sticks seem to work best.

madamekelly 06-14-2011 02:51 PM

I seem to remember grandpa putting milk jugs full of water in the yard to keep them away, but I don't know why or how it worked, but his yard always looked like a golf course. Maybe this will help? If not, call your county extension agent, and ask them. That is one of the things they do.

shrabar 06-14-2011 04:44 PM

try bubble gum, where in MO are you from

jane2 06-14-2011 06:52 PM

Juicy Fruit chewing gumm (the orignal one) works like a darm. Moles love the flavour but cannot digest.

rexie 06-14-2011 07:26 PM

My neighbor puts those little whirlyjigs in her yard. She says the thumping noise runs them off. It must work, cause my yard is full of them.

RugosaB 06-14-2011 07:32 PM

My mole experience (tough no solution for you here)

One time I was walking one of the basenjis out front, and she kept tilting her head, like she was listening to the ground. She kept doing that, and moving along like the sound was moving. We finally figured out she was listening to the moles. In fact, I just cleaned a dead one off the deck. They kill them, but they don't eat them. They are called the 'dog for people who like cats!'

A few years ago the neighbor lady then, who I called 'city girl,' told me how she saw a huge snake (fox snake) and she called the exterminator and got rid of it. A month or sp later, she was complaining about all the mole hills they had.
Well duh, you killed their natural predator!

mamabear229 06-14-2011 07:33 PM

Funny you say that about the opossums. I have a Jack Russell, too. Today he got a opossum and a big old rat. Don't have moles here in Florida, to much sand.

If you have rose bushes in your yard, insert the thorny stems into the run. My one time rose growing neighbor, now deceased, always was successful with that method.
I have one that burrows in the flower beds from time to time and has never come into the yard, so I leave it be since it aerates the soil and sure make weeding easy early in the sping. HA!

I have been told to soak a dryer sheet in amonia and stick it in the holes.. that will run them out..

A friend of our swore on juicy fruit gum. She didn't chew it though. She said you put the stick - still in the aluminum wrapper - in the hole. The moles will chew through the aluminum to get to the gum, and the aluminum will kill them. I haven't tried this myself, but she used it - and had a mole free yard. :D

Move

donnalynett 06-16-2011 08:36 AM

If you live outside the city limits stand and watch for mound movement from their digging. Blast downwards with a shotgun and if you don't kill the darn thing the sound shock usually does. I have only had to resort to this method twice as the mole pellets usually work. You have to find the tunnel and insert the pellets as it won't work if you place them in the mound spot.

Sugarfoot 06-16-2011 10:44 AM

I bet it does run them off!

auntdeb 06-19-2011 05:26 PM

I know you will think this is crazy - - we did. Buy gummy worms - - not bears or any other - - just gummy worms. Cut them into four pieces and stuff the pieces down the mole runs with a stick. Also, wear gloves so they can't smell you on the gummy worm. We have had cats and dogs that have dug them up but they never stopped coming. We heard this on 'Listen to the Mrs.', a radio show where we live and IT WORKS!!! I couldn't believe it myself but we're seeing it. We roll the yard in the spring and where ever we see a mole run we stuff the gummy worm pieces. They love them but can't digest them. I believe it kills them. Sorry about that but we have had so many that we had to find a way to deal with them. Try it.
