Gmary Fons leaving Love if Quilting
I saw a video and Mary Fons said she was leaving PBS show Love of Quilting. Anyone know why? Her blog is still active but I could not find details as to why she was leaving and her current plans
Wow...I have watched a few episodes where actually someone else hosted.......I do know she has "designed" a line of fabric and was a guest on a MSQC tute and also caught her on a sewing program lately.... I personally do not like the "new" F&P programs....guess used to the two who started it working together. Also now there are no dimensions given, just told to go to website.....where one is told to get the mag that the episode is based on.....
will wait and and see....all things change and evolve |
Haven't heard that before -- I like this show and hope it continues.
I just went on line and read a few thing about Mary Fons.......poor girl gas had a nasty bout with intestinal problems..hope she's better......no mention of her leaving F&P though....
ill keep watching the program...hopefully it will continue somehow...actually it's the only one left around here! |
That girl has irritated me from day one, so I can't say I'm sorry to see her go. What I have never been able to understand, is why Liz Porter has never done a "special" with Maryann Fons, The only time you see her is with Mary.
I saw Mary Fons at a quilt show and she was delightful. She did say her feelings were bruised by so many hateful comments about her looks and how she isn't her mother.
I actually like her better than the original ladies. It's probably that she has her own things, isn't she big in Craftsy?
If she hadn't taken over the show the show was going to be discontinued. She has no colon so that alone is enough to deal, she doesn't need snarky remarks from the public but that's what you get when you are in the public eye. No she isn't her mother and never attempted to be. I know she appeals to the younger quilter, my DD friends will watch her show but not the others. Her fabric is great and not the utlra modern stuff most younger designers are creating.
She has gotten more sure of herself and less chatty. I like her over her mother. I also prefer Liz and like when she is on the show.
everyone will hate me for saying, but what does not having intestines have to do with likeing someone? If you don't like them, watch something else. Do I have to feel sorry for someone, Just saying.
well without the daughter and her mother and the other lady, there is no show.
I watched the video again and it was about her leaving Quilty, not Fons and Porter. Sorry for my confusion. I actually find her a little awkward sometimes but I find her to be endearing. She has a blog that is interesting and fun to read and is more about her writing and less about her quilting.
Skhf I love that a simple mistake can lead to such a discussion. Kind of reminds me of playing telephone when we were kids. Thank you for this fun thread. 😉
Mary Fons will be presenting at Sew Expo is Puyallup. Perhaps she is moving on in her life and promoting quilting in different ways?
I understand that they brought Mary in because they wanted to keep the hosts "in the family." But I think Marianne and Mary are great together. They have good rapport. Yes, Mary mugs a little, but my wife and I both like her. And as others have said, Mary will probably bring in young, new viewers

Having read all of the previous comments let me say this. My area no longer has any shows on PBS aside from the occasional Quilting Arts. Years ago there were a half dozen different ones that I taped while I was working at school and then watched with great delight over the weekend. I've seen Mary Fons with and without her mom, never with Liz Porter, and a variety of other guests, but these were all on You-tube videos. Got say, I'm a fan and 75 yrs old. I enjoy her personality and appreciate the attempts to draw in younger people. Wish her lots of success. Maybe the Fons and Porter want to slow down - even retire and enjoy life a bit.
I will miss her and her show. I liked her little 'quirky' demeanor!!! And I really liked the mother/daughter rapport!!
She was criticized for her looks? I had to google her, as I don't watch the show. She looks darn good to me..i'll trade!
People can be so mean. |
I agree about less quilting shows. I learned so much from Alex Anderson's Simply Quilts when I first started quilting. I have also enjoyed Eleanor Burns and her show is no longer aired on RFD TV. The only one left, and it can be sporadic, is Fons and Porter so I hope it stays on the air. Always like to watch the shows as they are great ways to learn new techniques.
I watch the show frequently and it did take me a little while to get used to Mary but I now think she does a very good job and plays host to different people....Liz Porter has been on frequently and I also enjoy her. I think all three are master quilters and that is what it is all about....good instructions and learning..
There's a lot of meanness out there. I didn't like the daughter at first, but she has hung in, improved her skills in all areas, and I give her credit for her grit.
Her looks have nothing to do with anything. And neither does her not having a colon. I simply think the camera doesn't care for her....she doesn't seem to be "natural" in front of it. But I'm more old fashioned and use to the original ladies. I'm also sure that Mary will bring in a ton of young quilters.
Mary really "grew" on me and I totally miss her Quilty magazine that is now no longer published. On the newest episodes of the Love of Quilting show, Patrick Lose has been hosting (for those who don't know, he is involved with F&P and they publish a quarterly magazine of his designs). I like him... he's very low-key, but informative, and really knows what he's talking about. Mary will still be on the show as far as I know. I assumed she had some other commitments and instead of tweaking their taping schedule, they tapped Patrick to fill in.
I watch it every Saturday morning on our local PBS station and it did take me some time to get used to Mary but I did, and enjoy her show. Do I wish Liz were back with her mother on the show, YES but Mary is doing a good job and Liz does come back for episodes on occasion.
For the last few weeks on PBS n our area there have been no quilting/sewing shows. But go figure they're bringing back Julia Child.
I love the show with both Mary, Mary Ann and Liz, whenever they do one together.
I'm glad someone else feels as I do concerning Mary. Mary makes lots of faces, seems uncomfortable on camera and constantly interrupts guests. I only watch F&P if there is something of real interest. Sad.

I wasn't fond of Mary when I saw the program years ago. But for a long time I haven't had any quilting shows available. (maybe because I get the cheapest cable package :/! ) Anyway, I would gladly watch it again if I had access and would hope she would grow on me as others have said.
I miss Liz Porter and yes she did at least one show with Mary. I like having Patrick Lose on the show. I am just a more advance quilter than Mary. I watch the show to learn something new. Sorry she is having to deal with health problems.
Mary had to grow on me too; if she is like me I also do not like being up in front of people - and yet like Mary I am too. Thankfully not on tv. I give her great credit for jumping in to save the show. And Liz has been on there several times with Mary when mom wasn't available. Am sure her mom will one day want to retire also. Hope she hangs in there. I used to get several shows but now only get F&P and Sewing with Nancy.
Mary had to grow on me, too, but now I really like her. I think I didn't care for her at first because she was hosting a show about quilting, and she didn't know how to quilt. I had an occasion about a year ago to appeal to her via email for some help with something or other, and she answered my question quickly and was absolutely delightful to converse with. I give her a lot of credit for hanging in there with the show. She has worked hard at learning to quilt and her expertise shows now. She seems more comfortable in front of the camera and has grown by leaps and bounds. I remember when my very favorite host, Alex Anderson, was new and not the polished host she grew to be.

I am afraid I have to totally agree with your comments. A friend and I have watched her and her mother from day one and she has interrupted her mother and corrected her. She just seems phony to me. Last Saturday there was Patrick Lose and a woman and I thoroughly enjoyed them and hope to see more co-hosts like that. I do know that Mary has had lots of health issues and is now divorced. Maybe that is part of the problem. A few times Liz was on the show with Mary and it would be nice if it would have been Liz and Maryann again if only for one show.

I agree. I do not enjoy Mary. And, I don't believe any of us are being mean or nasty--we are just voicing our opinions and if there are those who enjoy her then there is nothing wrong with that either. We all have our likes and dislikes. For those that don't know Mary has been in a number of plays so I don't 'feel that she is uncomfortable being in front of people.

Did Liz and MaryAnn have a falling out? When Liz does the show it is always with Mary. I also miss that they don't give the fabric dimensions like they did years ago. Now if you want to make the pattern, you need the magazine. I have gotten more use to Mary, but I do prefer the original ladies.

I wonder about bout a possible falling out too, but who knows... just watched a series 2700 episode featuring a QOV done by nancy Mahoney, and she was cohosting. I noticed that the cutting mat is now turned upside down ........can't count the inch marks to get an idea if what the size is..... I liked the two block combo she demoed, did a good job of explaining (nancy). So, afterwards I went to website to see the reference info in this project...found the episode, saw the quilt and blurb, but don't know the source...i.e., is design a Mahoney one or from one of the mags......tried to get deeper into the site...wanted me to "join"..no....couldn't even 'contact us' for info. I'll just have to watch again (saved) and sit wth graph paper or EQ and play..... |
I remember reading someplace (don't remember where any more) that Liz had retired from the show and will only do guest appearances from time to time. Don't know if this is true or not, who knows. If they had a falling out, they certainly aren't going to tell us that is for sure.
Lynnie I agree with you. Shows change and one either likes them or not. I stopped watching them long ago simply because they are so commercial. Bye my stuff is what they push. I even stopped their magazine because it became more advertising that quilts that inspire. Just sayin'.
no falling out occured. retirement occured. Now Mary was extremely nervous and did just fine. I like the Mother and her side kick best of course, mainly because I was used to them and am not good with change. I do hope Mary's leaving wasn't anything said. I do wish her good luck!!
