My job has decided to pay for me to go back to school to continue my education. I am thrilled however, since I have been working for so long I have to take a placement apptitude test to see where I need to start off. I am perfectly fine with the English and the numberical skills, pre-algebra and algebra section but I am not looking forward to Trigonometry! Oyyy veyyyy...wish me luck tomorrow lolol

Best of luck to you, April! Continuing education is always a good thing. Kudos to you for doing it!! :)
|
I feel for you, all that math....I was glad to finally finish algebra, so I could get into chemistry. I hate math, but love science.
|
Good Luck! Clear your head, take a deep breath and go with your first instinct...it's probably right. If you don't do as well as you think you should have, ask if you can take placement test again.....most colleges will let you retake. You'll do fine!!!
|
Best of luck let us know how things go, I had to do the same thing when I went back to college after many years of being a parent & working full time. I'm sure you will do fine, like they said its just to figure out where to place you within the non credit subjects.

"Why didn't sin and tan go to the party?"
"... just cos" That was hysterically funny when I was 16. Now, not so much.  That's a great opportunity for you. And the company wouldn't be spending the money if they didn't think you were worth it, so that's got to make you feel pretty good. Best of luck!! |
I hated chemistry!!!!!!!! But w/o it I couldn't get into nursing school.
Good luck, April!!!!!!! You'll be fine! If I can pass Chem you can pass anything lol |
Just so you know, I finally graduated college in 2003 after grad. high school in '67. It was the proudest moment of my life. I used CLEP (college level education program, i think) tests to get about 10 classes, including the entry level English with composition they required. The tests cost less then $100 when I took them and they were great for requirements. If you buy the books and can do the practice tests you're all set. I used them for a marketing class, and other things I had learned from many years of working.
You might also be able to get credit for life experience if you write up what you know. These type of non-traditional methods of moving ahead can be a huge help to older students who want to graduate but also have lives at this point. If you would like any more info I'd be happy to help. And I know you'll do great on the placement test, so good luck! |
Math is my fortay so to speak since I do all the financial aspects and investments and such but when you get in to all of those signs and such..I don't use that day to day lol I am happy they gave me the benefit though so I will use it. I love love math...just not every aspect of it :-)
Thanks for the well wishes and I will let you know how I do...get my grades on the spot  . Hugs April |

Where are you planning to attend? I know you're in my area :) I'm a prof at SUNY O.
|
April,
I am so happy for you! I went to school at 40 and got my B.A. in 22 months, then went to graduate school and got my 90 gh M.Div. I was 45 when I graduated. It was so freeing! I thought it would be so tough, but it just took perseverance. I finished both degrees with a 3.8 and worked full time and drove 120 miles each day each way. |

If you're going the SUNY route, definitely check out Empire State College (perfect for getting a ton of credit for life experience courses as mentioned upthread). One of my favorite movie lines EVER: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091738/quotes?qt=qt0358352 Although I always felt they should used trig instead of algebra. |
Good luck on your schooling.
|
I went back later, best move I ever made. Good Luck but I bet you will do great!
|
Congrats! What a great opportunity for you!!! Will pray for you as you take your placement test. You go girl!
|
Best of luck! Probably too late for you to read this tonight, so hope you did well.
|
Congrats, I'm sure you'll do great. I too, finally got to go to college at 40, graduated at 43 and went on for my masters. My hubby was military and we moved so much I had to wait till he retired to go, but, I'm glad I did. It was one more thing on my list of goals I have completed.

One of my kids said she learned faster when she read the questions and answers and taped them as she did it. Then she could listen to her own voice as she took care of her house and little kids. Your own voice on a record will attract your minds' attention better than any strangers'.
Worth a try, and you could listen to it while driving...if it does NOT distract you. Me, I never, ever have the radio on while driving because it does distract me. And of course I never use a cell while driving either, and as for you, please do not, ever. We want you to continue on this board for a long while yet. |
Way to go April, at least your program is sponsoring some of your tuition.
When I finish, it will be around $67,000.00 tax free. I've been in school since Summer '07. Hopefully by 2012 I will have my BS. I just finished up Intermediate Algebra ( a few weeks back) and it was not so bad. Good Luck! |
good luck with the schooling
|
Fantastic decision!
Enjoy the journey! |
Good luck! How can you go wrong with knowledge?
|
I know that you can do it, just put your mind to it and you will have it licked!

Wow, that's exciting news. Sending you best wishes :)
|
I went back late (got my BS at 37 and Masters at 43) and it was much easier than I expected. It seems that all the "life experience" that we have really does help!!!! Good luck, and if it isn't really high level math....write on the board and I'm sure somebody'll give you good advice!

Congratulations April. You go girl !!!
Will you still be putting time in at work? |
April,
After getting married and leaving high school at 16, I went to a community college at 41 and got an A.S. in 15 months. Although it is a little odd to return to a classroom, it was much easier than I thought. Teenage issues are no longer a problem -- boyfriend problems, disagreements with parents, undependable car, etc. And I finished top in my class. :D Best of wishes to you! Looking forward to hearing of your successes. |
I went back to school 2 years ago (I am 53) and after working in accounting for 20+ years, I placed in beginning math LOL. I had to start all over and yes, I have struggled. I had a 4.0 GPA until I hit Intermediate algebra. It's tough, I still have one more math class after the one I am just now finishing. Good luck, enjoy your classes, I am betting you are going to love it. I know I do.
|
Congrats on the placement exams. What degree are you going for? Have you decided what college you are going to?
|
Yup I will still be working full time while going to school so it will be slow going but I can and will do this
I am going for my Bachelor's in Business with a concentration in Finance. I have run the credit union I work for for 7 years now as their financial officer and the assets have grown and we have positive ROA and a good capital asset ratio so I must be doing something right lol Now to have the paper to back it I guess :-) Hugs April |
Years of experience will help you greatly! Go for it :)
|
I got a BA Ed in '58, taught kindergarten one year, had two girls and stayed home with them doing Brownies, Girl Scouts, room mother, band boosters, swim team boosters; you know about that stage. Then at age 38 went to law school commuting every day. Graduated with JD the same year older DD graduated from HS. The kids and DH really pitched in and picked up the slack at home. Practiced law for close to fifteen years, the last ten in the Public Defender's Office. DH referred to me as his early retirement plan.
I'd always dreamed of being Perry Mason and loved it even though no one ever stood up in the back of the court room shouting "I did it." Drat the luck. It was a burn out job but I was good at it and loved it. Jane |
Way to go April!
