I would figure out a way to list all quilt shops on the way. YOu can get the Quilt book that shows all the shops. As far as places, stop at each border at the visitors center and go from there. Ify ou get thru texas and come thru Ft. Worth, I'd love to come see you. What a wonderful trip. I am going to do it when the weather clears myself and get a list of board members to pop in on. Have fun.

The Grand Canyon is a beautiful sight to see and you can see it either from Nevada or Arizona depending on which side you are closest to. I saw it from the Nevada side on the way to Las Vegas. It is so breathtaking - well worth the drive. Also Yellowstone National Park and Old Faithful is a great side trip. You will see alot of great country, many many many animals, and old Faithful is unbelieveable. I have driven cross country many times and always find more places that are gorgeous.

Have fun and be safe,

PS - if you have access to a GPS or garmin they are wonderful for trips such as this and tell you how to get from point a to point b or where the closest food, hotel, or gas is.

When you come to Utah, it's a joy to see so many different kinds of things, all so close together. In Kanab, you can see the Grand Canyon from the North Rim (the best view) is 90 miles, Zions Ntl Park (30 miles), Bryce Canyon (60 miles), Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell (50 miles) If you want more info, just PM me. Sara

Sunflower Girl 11-12-2010 06:51 PM

Close to Amarillo, TX is Palo Duro Canyon. It is the second largest canyon in the US.

retta97 11-12-2010 06:54 PM

Sara ,
would love any info Thanks

IrishNY 11-12-2010 06:56 PM

Also in AZ, make sure you go to Sedona (love the red rocks!) and Sunset Crater outside Flagstaff where you can walk through a lava field (very cool). You also can view the Painted Desert from Sunset Crater. It's all beautiful.

retta97 11-12-2010 06:57 PM

Hubby watching and states only if we go to every gun shop along the way.Well guess what, we wouldn't see anything but quilt and gun shops! LOL

retta97 11-12-2010 06:59 PM

IrishNY were in New York? I am in Rochester.

KathyAire 11-12-2010 07:02 PM

You will be too early to see the outdoor musical production 'Texas' in the Palo Duro Canyon. But you can see
Cadillac Ranch outskirts of Amarillo.

KarenSimon 11-12-2010 07:05 PM

In northern AZ is the meteor crater. Interesting. The Grand Canyon is very important to see. Southern AZ check out Kartchner Caverns state park.

And don't forget all the quilt shops along the way.

SaraSewing 11-12-2010 07:36 PM

ARe you motor-homing it? Or camping? Or hoteling? Or . . .??

luckylindy333 11-12-2010 07:39 PM

What a great trip! It would be fun to find out which gems and mines are in each state. That is what I have always wanted to do (aside from going to all the quilt shops, of course).

IrishNY 11-12-2010 08:02 PM

Retta,
Near Binghamton, but I grew up in Rochester and have two daughters in colleges around Rochester, so get there often.

Forgot to tell you - there is a great quilt shop in Sedona. ;)

And maybe you can work in one or two of the big quilt shows along the way, like Paducah.

Navy Wife 11-12-2010 08:21 PM

You may be able to catch the dogwoods in Smoky Mountain National Park. Or the cherry trees in Washington. And of course there's Nashville with the Opryland Hotel. A bit expensive, but you can stay nearby and just visit the hotel. There are other places to see in Nashville like Music Row and the Rhyman Auditorium (the original Grand Old Opry) For gems, try digging for diamonds In Crater of Diamonds Park in Arkansas, or near Phillipsburg, Montana, there are Sapphire mines, my favorite
I second the list that included Yellowstone. We spent 8 summers there volunteering in a Ranger Station. Be sure to allow time to see it though. You might be there too early. The snowplows don't always get the roads open till late April. Great Falls, MT has a good museum about Lewis and Clark expedition. So much to see, so little time! Quilt Shops are all over the place, so don't spend all your money in one place!

Marlys 11-12-2010 08:22 PM

I loved Carlsbad Caverns in N. Mexico. If you go to northern N. Mexico I would recommend slipping into Colorado to see Mesa Verde. Obviously you should see the Grand Canyon - fabulous. We also loved Zion & Bryc National Parks in Utah. If you are going to visit more than one of these parks, I recommend purchasing an annual National Parks pass. I think it is $80 but it gets you into all of the National Parks for a year - well worth the money. I have done this trip more than once so PM me if you have any questions.

retta97 11-12-2010 08:24 PM

My husband goes through there 5 nights a week as he is a trucker and has a local run that takes him from Rochester to Chester New york Sunday through Thursday.I was thinking the same thing now any sugestions on how to get hubby to stop?

hannajo 11-12-2010 08:52 PM

I grew up in Pennsylvania. Bucks county has lots of historical stuff if you're into that. There's lots of covered bridges if you google it. Also, there's the house of author Pearl S. Buck. A famous tile factory, the Mercer Museum. Anyway, if you're in the area, there's lots of this kind of stuff.

Also, when driving through the state on Rt. I80 I always see signs for interesting things like Crystal Cave. I have always wanted to drive that when I have time to just pull over at anything interesting.

If you are near Chattanooga, there is Rock City, our beautiful mountains and lots of Civil War sites. We also have the Chattanooga Choo Choo hotel which has actual railroad cars you can get rooms in and the Tennessee Aquarium. I live about 25 miles from Chattanooga and would love to meet you. There are two wonderful quilt shops, one in Chattanooga called Lavender Lime and one just outside Chattanooga in Ringgold, GA called Sew Bee It. We also have a new Joannes in Chattanooga which you might be able to get in by then (it's pretty busy since it just opened last month!)

mzsooz 11-12-2010 09:52 PM

ctack2 11-13-2010 01:07 AM

Can you give us an idea of what kind of things you're looking to see (besides quilt shops and gun shops). lol
Are you wanting to see major attractions or are you looking for the little hide-a-way places off the beaten path?

You could also go to the library and look through their US Travel books for ideas.

Here'a a couple links where you might find some ideas too.

Both central Pa and Northeast Ohio have Amish areas. They have beautiful completed quilts as well as shops. I agree that you might want the quilt shop book. I got mine at my LQS and stick in in the car anytime we travel.
If you talk to some locals they will send you in the right direction and let you know where to go. They know the best places to eat as well!!

smagruder 11-13-2010 04:35 AM

Kentucky... don't know your interests but.... Boonesboro, Frankfort ( capital museum), Louisville ( Churchill Downs, Slugger Museum), Bowling Green ( Corvette Museum, Mammoth Cave of I 65 south of Louisville, are just a few... our parks are really pretty if interested. Good luck and have a wonderful journey.

Sounds like a fun time is coming your way.

How about giving us some MAJOR HIGHWAYS you're planning on using? That way we'll know what direction you're traveling and what parts of those states you mentioned.

We have a motorhome and our last trip out, a couple of weeks ago, I purchased the new 2010-2012 "Quilter's Travel Companion" book. It is the BEST BOOK! I found several shops right on our route on our way home and my sweet DH stopped for me to browse.
The cost of the book is $20, but the shopowner let me have it for $15. I have looked for another copy at Amazon and eBay to give to a friend for Christmas, but haven't been able to find another 2010-2012 copy.
If you can find one of these books, you will love it!

When you are in Colorado a Must See is the Sand Dunes (yep, there are HUGE sand dunes there. On Interstate 25 toward the south of the state. They are unbelievably beautiful. I lived in Denver and saw them and I was floored at their size and beauty. Don't miss them. Oh yes, Greatly enjoy your travel. Wishing a safe journey.

If you go through Pennsylvania, a trip to the Lancaster area and Amish country is beautiful. They are many quilt shops as well as country restaurants.

I now live in New Mexico (and have made that drive from PA to NM) ... what area of the state are you traveling through and what type of things are you interested in seeing?

clem55 11-13-2010 10:57 AM

In and around Lexington,<Ky. A beautiful state horse park, museum there; Ashland, home of Henry Clay, beautiful park like setting and tour of gorgeous home; Mary Todd Lincoln home;Headley Museum, see bibliots made of precious stones and metals; beautiful horse farms; Lexington Cemetery( now I know that may sound like a weird place to visit, but it is absolutley beautiful, especially in April. And there is Berea with lots of artist craft shops. This area a great place to visit! right off I64 and I75.

nannya54 11-13-2010 01:02 PM

You didn't mention going through Nebraska but..... If you do and find yourself on I-80, you will go under the Archway which is a newer attraction. You literally are walking over the interstate but you'd never realize it until the very end. The whole purpose of the archway to to introduce people to the west. Inside is a walking tour of the history of the west ( headsets relate the stories ) from the covered wagons to modern day times - looking over the interstate and seeing how fast the vehicles are actually going. They have a wonderful gift shop and depending on the time of day a place to eat. It's located just east of Kearney which is in the center of the whole United States. Happy and sage traveling.

Also, in Lincoln, you can view the state capital since it's the tallest building in the city, has a gold dome. It is the only state capital in the entire nation entirely paid for BEFORE it was constructed and there is a state statute mandating that all repairs and additions can be done only after the money is raised. It's a beautiful building and can easily be seen from the interstate.
