Not sure when or how it got started, but if a ground hog,(a big fat furry animal that burrows (do a Google for a picture)), see's his shadow early in the morning, we will have 6 more weeks of winter. Silly, I know:).

We have Jimmy. He predicts an early spring. Last year the previous Jimmy tried to bite the mayor, so this year Jimmy had to do his predicting from his cage.

And I saw my first robin. What a day!!!

In 1887 in Punxsutawney, PA, the first Groundhog Day was celebrated.

Trevor Noah did a pretty funny bit on the Daily Show, about how weird it is that Americans use a rodent to predict the weather. He says in Africa (where he's from) they use this weird thing called "satellite data". :D
It doesn't sound funny when I typed it out, but I found it to be quite amusing the way he presented it. |
We do have some weird ways of predicting weather! In a little village in NC, a wise man uses a brown woolly worm to predict the weather. The black stripes on his nose indicates so many weeks of winter, the brown ones indicates the warmer weather. An older gentleman who was very observant of the weather started the predictions and he was right 86% of the time. Not bad before the days of satellites, etc.

In uk we have st Swithen's day later in the year. If it rains on this day it will rain for the next forty days. As you guessed it nearly always rains.
