Dogone hot flashes! Everytime I think I am done with them. they return with a vengence!Have central AC but I am still burning up and sweating like crazy. Just venting here, get no sympathy from DH.

patricej 08-14-2010 12:03 PM

treat yourself to a mood swing.

then you can return the favor of no sympathy.

emt2004 08-14-2010 12:14 PM

Same here, I am always sweating. I hate it, it's been 11 years and still get them. I get them worse if I drink cold drinks, chocolate and spagetti sauce...............

Tink's Mom 08-14-2010 12:21 PM

Next hot flash, go to the freezer and just open it and fan yourself with the door.....it feels soooooo gooood. ;-)

DebraK 08-14-2010 12:26 PM

been there done that. It will get better, honest.

lynnie 08-14-2010 12:32 PM

o.k., so i get hot all over, it's not a flash it last for about 45 min to 2 hrs, and i'm burning up, is it a hot flash or is it my sugar doing weird things, i', diabetic

CoyoteQuilts 08-14-2010 12:44 PM

katiebear1, I was going through this for over a year really bad. When it first started I used Black Cohash and that helped, but then stopped...... I recently started taking B complex with Vit C for energy and the side effect=====no more hot flashes! They come back if I forget to take it for a couple days, so I know it is the B that is helping. Don't know if that will help you or not. I just buy the store brand..... I don't like the side effects of hormone replacements so would suffer with the hot flashes if that is was the only medicine that would control them. Good luck!

It has been 6 years since I had a total hysterectomy and I was having them for at least 3 years before that. My sister is having the same hard time . But I remember my Mom said it was "no big deal" when she went through it of course she was of the generation that said "that's just a woman's lot in life, so shut up about it" LOL

In the winter I go stand outside on my deck especially when I get the night sweats. It Does feel really good.

emt2004 08-14-2010 01:06 PM

It's been 11 years for me & still get them. When people see me fanning myself they say, "there she goes again, those hot flashes". At work I sit in front of a fan, they all laugh at me.........Michele

mrspete 08-14-2010 03:28 PM

I have never had one of those natural hot flashes you talk about, so I guess I wasn't built right. But, this diabetes really kicks my butt. Change sheets every morning and nighty and shower a couple times a day. Think it is under control and it bottoms out....get it back up and there it goes, sweat sweat sweat..... Dr says it will work out. hmmmmm Dr of what, I wonder? Changing Dr next month. Still, that kind of sweating leaves you sick. Does the "mennnie paws" make you sick, too?
Blessings,
Ruth

mountain-moma 08-14-2010 03:42 PM

Chasing Hawk 08-14-2010 03:47 PM

My dog Bella and I are going through menopause together.....LOL

My body was forced into it after an auto accident and major surgery that followed. It's been 7 years and if I can make it another month, it will be done.....LOL

mzsooz 08-14-2010 03:49 PM

I called them power surges. Thanks to my pills I don't have them anymore. And a bonus...my family can stand to be around me most times! :-D :-D

Yes, but so much has come out about the side effects of HRT. I am scared to go that route.

Gramma B 08-14-2010 04:56 PM

I'm with you there -- I havce a circular floor fan that I have on when I'm sewing or quiting, especially ironing! Will they ever end?

Jingle 08-14-2010 05:10 PM

I burn up this summer, it has been very hot.
One Son-in-Law's Sister calls hot flashes -"Personal Summers". Very cute. Don't get many in the winter when its cold.

KathyAire 08-14-2010 05:49 PM

Hot flashes and quilting just isn't a very good combination. It's a real killer when you have a large quilt in your lap and a flash hits you.

Suzanne57 08-14-2010 05:59 PM

I call them "POWER SURGES" too but I like the 'Personal Summer". I'll use it the next time I have one in public. I've also been known to carry an oriental folding fan with me when I don't have access to an electric one. BUT please please don't tell me they last TEN years! They have been slacking off now and it's only been about 4 years.

sewnsewer2 08-14-2010 06:01 PM

I know the feeling, went thru it when I was 38 for several years.

There is a bright side tho... no more periods!

Charleen DiSante 08-14-2010 06:03 PM

I've called them my "own personal summer" since I started getting them. I like the title: power surges too!

That is too bad. I'm on a very low dose and have absolutely NO side effects. No hot flashes (maybe a couple a year) and they help with my depression. My dr is always eager to prescribe for me because I'm doing so well on them. Best thing I ever did. The main reason I'm on them is because of osteoporosis. My grandma died from it. Mom has it and I have osteopenia (the beginnings of osteoporosis) and I'm only 53. I had a bone scan and showed problems...the dr put me on prempro 2 years later rescanned and my bones showed marked improvement. I'm not taking any chances!!

I have been on HRT for 28 yrs. My Dr took me off of them this past March & I have flashes something terrible. They are getting somewhat better, but I would love to go back on the HRT. She seems to think it is healthier at 57 to not be on them. Trying to tough it out. That is the only thing the pills helped with.

amandasgramma 08-14-2010 08:08 PM

I'm taking black cohosh for it and it really works for me!!!

Me too...almost as long.
My Dr took me off them last summer-absolutly terrible time of year to do that!!! Have had bad hot flashes ever since. Summer is terrible and winter is only a little better.
I would rather put up with the chance breast cancer sometime in the future and have a good quality of life while I still have a chance of having one!!
I always thought that they did not last more than a few years...but then there was not (still not) all that much info floating around for this part of our future!
Have tried the One-a-day for 'mature' women + menopause relief---did not help one iota!
Would like to know more about black cohosh though....off to Google I go........................

lalaland 08-14-2010 10:28 PM

I remember having my own personal heat wave. Just when I thought I was going to spontaneously combust it would cool down a notch. I don't have them anymore but I seriously sympathize.

Gwyn 08-14-2010 11:00 PM

Ladies, there some other things to do to help you. Some foods contain natural estrogen. Anything soy - soy milk, soy beans, other beans and lentils. There are some other products that may help, including some creams you get at the health food store. It is worth it to give it a try. Many ladies find that a B complex supplement.

Hormone replacement therapy may also help you feel better. It does have side effects, but some of them are good. HRT only increases your chances of developing breast cancer is tiny amount. Especially if you do not smoke. For some ladies this is the only relief they get.

If you are truly miserable as some of you sound, you probably should talk to a doctor. Don't make yourself continue to suffer. Do a little research on line and you will find all kinds of things that helped other people. I found a vegetarian diet very helpful, but I couldn't have survived without HRT after my hysterectomy.

emt2004 08-15-2010 06:11 AM

sewcrafty,
How much B complex do u take?..........Michele

SundarKoyal 08-15-2010 06:35 AM

It is such a coincidence that quite a few of you mention that your hot-flashes feel like Power Surges! I belong to a message board that i believe is the biggest message board for anyone going through Menopause and Peri-menopause. There is a ton of information on that website and articles from doctors who state that there are more natural ways to help with the symptoms of menopause. There are a TON of wonderful women on that board all suffering from the same types of things. No matter what your symptoms are there is usually a topic board about it. It is just as wonderful a place to be as this quilting board is. If you are interested (I am a member there as well), the web address is...

http://www.power-surge.com/

I hope this helps as it helped me answer a lot of my own questions concerning meno and peri-menopause.

I took to start 1 in the morning and 1 at night then went to one a day. I also found that stress brought mine on more. If things are getting real stressful, then back on the complex!!  It really did help wonders!

Gwyn 08-16-2010 09:35 PM

I have a grrr...

I purchased all the material for a quilt I saw on line. The directions were free, and I got what I paid for.

The directions had several mistakes and had me forgo one fabric for another because they didn't have me buy enough for the directions. But, if I had realized the cutting instructions were wrong, I would have been fine.

Now, I have cut up fabric left over. These are expensive scraps. I will make another quilt... in a few days, but I get really angry when I have followed the directions and they were wrong!

jljquilter 08-17-2010 01:48 AM

Just a thought. We are not experienceing global warming. The climate change is being caused by all the baby-boomers and their hot flashes.

Hmmmm - -

One of the good things is - my feet are usually warm at night now - I used to have ice blocks fastened to my ankles.

There are people that go through menopause relatively easily - I was one of them - maybe it was a way of evening out those horrible periods when I was young!
