Halloween

It seems like more people are decorating for Halloween now than 50 years ago.

Do you decorate for Halloween?

If you do - how much decorating do you do?

A related question - how many people/countries celebrate/observe Halloween?

(I do like some of the Halloween fabrics - I have some great ones in my stash - but that's about as far as I/we go with our "observance/decorating" for the day.)

Used to decorate when had the little ones. Nowadays, I put a few streamers outside so the little trick-or-treaters will know to come by and I do some loot bags. That's all I do. No Halloween fabric in my stash.

PamelaOry 08-04-2018 06:48 AM

Not much, although when my kids were little we set up a haunted “path” for tricker treaters a few years. Nowadays we are lucky if we get a dozen tricks treaters. I do have costumes for my dogs and last year we dressed them up and they helped us hand out candy.

ive thought about getting a Halloween pin for mt pin cushion, does that count?

SusieQOH 08-04-2018 07:01 AM

It was lots of fun when my boys were little. I don't anymore. My husband hates anything Halloween, except
for the little kids and he doesn't hate much or request much so I don't bother with it. To be honest I don't
like Halloween colors.
My sister said one of these days she's going to get the ugliest thing JAF has and give it to Paul lol

dunster 08-04-2018 07:13 AM

I actually think it's less celebrated now than it used to be, even though the stores already have the Halloween merchandise out, 3 months in advance. I don't decorate. I did make a Halloween quilt once, but it was a donation.

Doggramma 08-04-2018 07:14 AM

I do quite a bit Halloween decorating. We have lots of trick or treaters (over 100) as we live in a newer subdivision. I keep the decorations more on the cute side rather than scary. Most of the trick or treaters are pretty young.

mandyrose 08-04-2018 07:32 AM

speaking of halloween won't be long if not already the halloween candy will be in the stores .......I don't decorate anymore all the halloween stuff i made through years just sit in the storage binn

I have a cute Halloween panel that I want to quilt for the fall. I don’t decorate much now that my children are grown. I am disappointed that the children no longer carry unicef boxes here. I used to get mine almost full every year and it gave me a good feeling to know the money collected would help others.

sewbizgirl 08-04-2018 09:20 AM

No, I don't decorate for Halloween. I don't make Halloween quilts, either. Nowadays the kids seem to go to the church Harvest Festivals, rather than door to door. It's safer.

Anniedeb 08-04-2018 09:30 AM

I still decorate. I have a Halloween table runner and place pumpkins, leaves etc on that. I have two Halloween wall hangings that I use. I enjoy changing with the seasons, and love the fall. I have a fall wreath with a few Halloween things on it. For the day itself, we have a big lighted pumpkin we put outside, on the off chance we'll get a few trick-or-treaters. We live on a short, 3 block long, not very well lit street, that has a dead end, and is kind of hard to find! Plus, there are no youngsters in our neighborhood. Getting 10-12 kids is a lot for us!

Wanabee Quiltin 08-04-2018 09:40 AM

I’ve always decorated for Halloween. I never get any kids here, very few on our street and we live down the hill from everyone. I like to hang the skeleton out in the tree, put the witch by the door and various glass stuff around. Hubby loves candy corn so bowls of it are filled. I used to dress up at work and had a lot of fun with grandchildren at a party.

Same for me. Actually, Halloween can be dangerous for us little ole ladies also. Several years ago, a little old lady opened her door to what she thought were little spooks. They were spooks alright, but not the little ones. Her body was found in the mist of the candy she was giving out. She was hit on the head by that well-used blunt object.

Be careful out there, y'all!

For 17 years I didn't decorate at all for Halloween or Christmas (except for putting up the tree every 3rd year when we hosted the family) because our house was not visible from any road or walkway. But we've moved into a village. I got one of those projection lights and it was really pretty as it washed over our house at Christmas. It does have a Halloween setting and I'm thinking of using it this year. Went from no kids--not even the neighbour's two boys--for 17 years, to about 40 last year.

Jingle 08-04-2018 02:40 PM

No decorations and no trick or treaters.

We have a Granddaughter in law that loves everything Halloween. I love the candy corn.

Jordan 08-04-2018 05:30 PM

Halloween is my favorite holiday and I decorate all over inside and outside of my house. My 3 granddaughters live with me and they love to help decorate but as they get older it is less decorating each year. I want a Halloween quilt on every bed in the house eventually.

WMUTeach 08-05-2018 03:33 AM

I do not celebrate Halloween at all. Oh, when my children were young, just kiddos, they trick or treated but times were different. Now Halloween seems to be all about blood gore, horrific scariness or sexiness. Halloween has lost its fun and silliness. When I was in a house I just hated to see 4, 5, 6 year-olds coming to my door with horrific scary masks and costumes. It hurts my hear to think that these children have had their innocence stolen. (I live in a condo now and there are no trick or treaters at all.) I just decorate for fall and it lasts from September through Thanksgiving.

When I am given Halloween fabric, I just pass it on to my guild friends who will use it.

coopah 08-05-2018 04:22 AM

I dislike Halloween. Basically, I dislike October even though it is my birth month. It is not a happy time for me and "celebrations" seem odd, but that's because of my life experiences. More of my family (inlcuding son, grandfather, grandmother, MIL, and more) have died in that month than any other. My DIL and SIL love the "celebration" and I let them have fun with it. It's great fun for young ones, and we did go with our kids when they went trick-or-treating.

Karamarie 08-05-2018 04:36 AM

I do some fall color decorating and add a few little touches for Halloween and then exchange those for Thanksgiving touches as it gets closer to Thanksgiving.

Jane Quilter 08-05-2018 04:39 AM

We get no trick or treaters, but now that the grands are near, I have a few cute things. They love the hand over the bowl that tries to grab them when the reach for a candy. But even they go to church festivals to stay safe.

lindaschipper 08-05-2018 04:54 AM

I don't decorate for Halloween anymore since the kids are grown and all living in different states. But for many many year I was a crafter of soft sculpture items and did an early fall show...sold more Halloween items such as pumpkins, witches, Frankensteins, bats etc. than anything else. Got to the point where people were placing orders for the witches and Frankensteins. Next thing that sold was Christmas items. I no longer make them, but quilt instead.

Nanny's dollface 08-05-2018 05:33 AM

yes, I decorate despite October being a month of anniversaries; my mom and first husband deaths, it is a way I celebrate their life by honoring one of their favorite holidays. last year, my courtyard was decorated with a theme of Game of Thrones. I made a plastic lawn chair out foam swords from a dollar store, inflatable fire breathing dragon, a fog machine, game of throne banner, candles, dragon eggs, etc. I even dressed up as one of the characters- blond wig, boots, and blue caped dress. we had about 200 trick or treaters along with their parents. all had a good time and enjoyed the evening. Not sure what the theme will be this year.

Jo Anne B. 08-05-2018 09:14 AM

I love Halloween and Fall, I decorate inside and outside using both Halloween and Fall themes. We also live in a newer subdivision with lots of families. We have Trick or Treat night or Beggars night on the 31st, most surrounding communities have T&T on the 30th, we get a lot of cars of probable double dippers. My new pet peeve is adults asking for treats for infants in the stroller.
A tradition in Central Iowa is the kids telling a joke/riddle for the treat, hence why we call it Beggars Night.

Jo Anne B. 08-05-2018 09:19 AM

Last year I made a rectangle table topper in a Halloween theme for my niece for her Oct. bday. I loved it! My plan was to make myself one for this year, doesn't look like it going to happen.
And I have way too much Halloween fabric. I love it all!!!

sJens 08-05-2018 04:22 PM

I am not a Halloween person so don't decorate for it at all. Do love some of the Halloween/fall fabric though.

tranum 08-05-2018 04:31 PM

I like decorating all occasions but hate Halloween. I decorate for Fall and that’ll have to do. I know, I’m a grump.

carolynjo 08-05-2018 04:32 PM

Here folks are beginning to REALLY decorate. It gets worse every year. That's okay if you like it, but I happy to just leave it alone.

luvstoquilt 08-06-2018 04:50 AM

I don’t do a lot of Halloween decorating but have pumpkins on my porch and a good witch on my door. I turn on all the outside lights on Halloween and have treats ready for the children that come. We have dedicated hours here so it ends about 8pm. I love the little kids and their costumes. I think I have as much fun as they do!

Cam's gram 08-06-2018 05:26 AM

I decorate for fall with a few Halloween touches. I did make a Halloween quilt! Love fall except it marks the end of summer.

sewnclog 08-06-2018 09:51 AM

As a kid we used to go trick or treating and living in town we could have over 300 trick or treaters but no decorations around the house. Now I live in the country; NO trick or treaters and still don't decorate and very little halloween fabric; some glow in the dark cats. A quiet time for me and that is ok.

lynnie 08-07-2018 01:41 PM

I have a cute quilt of different blocks, some from the board.
Most of them are appliqued. I love it. and some words too.
it goes up October 1st. I have some cute table runners. but
I can't find it.

Irishrose2 08-07-2018 09:45 PM

Minimal decorations here and they don't come out until mid October. A ceramic pumpkin and a small table runner are about it inside. Just a few pumpkins outside. My husband was into Halloween decorating outdoors, but he's gone so I don't do it. Besides, I don't like scary things and I don't like scaring little children. I thought last year's costumes were better - more age appropriate. I think the schools cracking down on scary costumes helped that.

My neighbor hood has a reputation for Halloween events. So much so that there are two. One for the neighborhood kids a week early Then it seems like the whole city comes over. Victorian houses lit up on all levels, light from tress to trees. Mini-plays in the yards. I got invited to carve pumpkins at the house below. The cleaner out their parlor and dining room to set up huge tables and brought out massive numbers of carving tools. Artist live there. Can you tell? Newcomers are told to prepare for 1200-1400 kids. And it happens. Thankfully. I live in a bungalow on a side street and get less than 40 usually.

Oh I just love the Halloween season. I decorate a little for Halloween, with my made Halloween quilts or w/h. (No trick or treaters). I love the fall colors and pumpkins, cooked apples, cooking things in the oven again where it heats up the house, verses having it counter the air conditioner. To me Halloween starts the 4 months of holidays which I love. One thing I do dislike is it starts the temperatures getting cooler and eventually cold. But I love the holidays leading up to January.

I don't think you're a grump at all. I don't like Halloween colors ( orange and black). But I love Fall colors so I decorate that way. Maybe we're both grumps :D

Oh god, here are some nice pics from Halloween. I miss such events as Halloween. For me, Halloween is every day now. Because everyone wears a mask and everyone looks like nurses from Silent Hill. Seriously, I miss people and exciting events we had before the virus. I remember I was at a street party in 2017. It was a crazy party. Everyone was laughing and dancing on the streets. You can check them on the pics here. We couldn't even imagine our life like now. Who knows maybe next year we all be free to walk on the streets or to travel to other countries without any mask.

I adore the fall & winter holidays and Halloween is my favorite! I start watching my spooky/scary/horror movies in October (everything from Garfield Halloween to Ghostbusters to Hocus Pocus to Scream) and we get the yard all decked out. We dress up for the big night and give out tons of candy! The year before Covid we had over 150 trick or treaters! Last Halloween we made big individual candy bags and put them at the end of the driveway on a haunted table, we sat way back at the garage in our costumes and chatted with everyone, it was honestly one of the best Halloweens ever, we might do the haunted table from here on out.

We've built ourselves a reputation over the years and people tell us they make a point to come by our home every year. and yes, I have made several Halloween quilts and have a decent amount of fabric in my stash https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png
