how different does it taste from regular yogurt? Is it more expensive?

Zhillslady 08-15-2011 11:15 AM

I don't care for yogurt but I really like the greek yogurt. Yes it's more expensive but not terribly so.

quiltsillysandi 08-15-2011 11:15 AM

I tried the Vanilla flavor and it's just way too tart for me...Maybe a fruity flavor would be better, not sure...

Painiacs 08-15-2011 11:18 AM

I love greek yogurt!! I like it better than regular! I get greek Gods greek yogurt yummy!

ptquilts 08-15-2011 11:19 AM

yes, it is very good.

hobo2000 08-15-2011 11:19 AM

I love, love love it. Both Oikos and Chobani. The peach and pineapple are great. There is another brand from the natural food store that comes in coconut that is to die for if you're like me and love coconut.

amy WI 08-15-2011 11:20 AM

I love Chobani yogurt. I have to buy the kind with fruit-love mango, pineapple and pomegranate. It does have a little more sugar and is more expensive. I feel so much better when I eat it though so I think it's worth it. Enjoy!

charity-crafter 08-15-2011 11:22 AM

Greek yogurt is very creamy but does have a tart after taste. If you like unflavored regular yogurt you'd probably love greek yogurt.

And the different brands do taste different. I tasted some at Trader Joes, then bought Chobani at Costco and it doesn't taste the same.

But I may be comparing apples to oranges because the Chobani I bought was 0% fat and TJ's was I think 2% fat. Fat does make everything taste so much better. That's why I'm so fluffy.

sweet 08-15-2011 11:23 AM

Love the Greek yogurt!

meemersmom 08-15-2011 11:26 AM

I really like it, too. But, it's about triple the price of the regular brand I normally buy. it does have double the amount of protein, though. And, I like it better for cooking because it's thicker.

Sunflower Girl 08-15-2011 11:30 AM

I tried it but I didn't like the texture and had a "wang" to it. I'll stick to my Yoplait!

I love, love, love the Fage 0% fat plain yogurt. Thick and creamy, sour cream like flavor. I put some fresh berries in it and eat it that way. Yes, it is more expensive than regular. I think I pay $1.79 for a 6oz container.

vjengels 08-15-2011 11:39 AM

It's a little more expensive, but worth it in my opinion. more tangy; By the By, you can make your own greek style yogurt. Easiest way: take plain yogurt, strain using a sheet of paper towel or muslin, in a strainer, over a bowl in the frig, at least 8 hours pour off the liquid and Viola'!
Or, make yogurt from scratch, way less expensive;
1 gallon of lowfat milk heated to 180*, then cooled to 110* . Mix 1 cup of the warmed milk with 4 oz of plain ( no flavor, or sugar) yogurt containing active cultures.then mix that into the other milk. cover and kleep warm for 8-12 hrs.I used a heating pad on medium, covered the kettle with a heavy towel to keep the heat in;strain the same as above for desired thickness. this will keep in the frig for up to a week.

Quiltinggma-nc 08-15-2011 11:57 AM

Yes I have tried several different brands of Greek yogurt. Love the flavor and the texture. A little more expensive but worth it.

I make my own. It's so easy and very cheap. You can buy a yogurt maker in about any dept store but I use my countertop oven. You can use any type of milk you like. I use Flax milk, almond milk, coconut milk, and add powdered milk to add a calcium boost. Milk, yogurt starter (a dab of fresh yogurt will do) that's all you need. Draining the fresh yogurt makes Greek style yogurt. Here is a pic of a quart of fresh yogurt I made at a friend's house to show her how to do it.

charity-crafter 08-15-2011 12:13 PM

So draining it makes it greek? it's basically thicker? From the way it tastes I thought it was a different culture.

I don't know anything about yogurt. I find it innteresting when people make food from scratch.

Scrap Happy 08-15-2011 12:13 PM

I use Greek yogurt in place of sour cream sometimes.

BMP 08-15-2011 12:26 PM

I dont like to eat like the other yogurts but since I think it tastes more like sour cream I do use it for anything I would use sour cream for

TShooters 08-15-2011 12:43 PM

I like it, too. I use the plain non-fat with equal amount of light mayo and dry ranch dressing mix to make veggie dip/salad dressing. I like my dressing thick. :D

crafty pat 08-15-2011 12:45 PM

I love the one with honey, my DD told me to try it and I like more than the other's I have been eating.

I make this same recipe too but I thin it down with some water, if you do Weight Watchers this one is really low in points and the best tasting one I have had.

fayzer 08-15-2011 12:57 PM

I think I'm in the minority here. I bought Chobani berry yogurt don't like it at all. I got a 4 pack and 3 are still in the fridge.

ckcowl 08-15-2011 01:06 PM

we've been eating the greek yogurts for a long time- the only yogurt i will eat- it is much better for you. it is more expensive=but when it comes to food that is good for you i do not mind the extra expense= i would rather pay a little more.

raedar63 08-15-2011 01:13 PM

I like it, esp the honey one Mmmmmm

wanda lou 08-15-2011 01:20 PM

i like it alot especially Fage brand.

It's thicker and not so sweet very low carb.

Scraps 08-15-2011 02:27 PM

Greek Yogurt is the best. A few cents more, but great tasting. I think it has a smoother - sweeter taste. Read the label, but I think it is healthier too.

IrishNY 08-15-2011 05:14 PM

I love Chobani!

purplefiend 08-15-2011 05:20 PM

I like the Greek Gods honey yogurt. I like it much better than regular type.

brushandthimble 08-15-2011 05:38 PM

I use the chobani yogurt, I am NOT a fan of any yogurt but will have it for lunch once a week or so. I use the plain and add honey, sliced almonds, and either a ceral, or crushed granola bar for crunch.

Willa 08-15-2011 06:01 PM

YUCK! Hate it! Threw the rest of the container out.

nativetexan 08-15-2011 06:25 PM

the John Stamos one? Nope. but he was cute.

thismomquilts 08-15-2011 06:36 PM

Stonyfield chocolate is GREAT!!Chobani is good too

NancyBelly 08-15-2011 06:37 PM

I tried it too, Dannon< and didn't care for the texture. It was gritty and left a weird film on my teeth. And I made the mistake of brushing me teeth to get rid of the film....Crest and Greek yogurt don't mix well! ;))

luckylindy333 08-15-2011 06:40 PM

It is a little thicker and is quite a bit more expensive. I have to compare nutritional contents to see if there is any reason to buy it. There are some high protein yogurts out now that are nonfat. I like them. they are all hard to compare as they are all different sizes.

BellaBoo 08-15-2011 06:41 PM

This is how I feel about food too.

janedee 08-15-2011 08:28 PM

BrendaY 08-15-2011 08:32 PM

Amazing! The things I learn on QB...

Jammin' Jane 08-15-2011 08:37 PM

A sewing friend of mine just told me the honey one is really good. She puts chopped walnuts in it...says it's wonderful!

jaciqltznok 08-15-2011 09:19 PM

make your own yogurt in the crock pot, then strain for a day in the fridge and you will have your own greek style yogurt...

QUILTNMO 08-16-2011 02:57 AM
