I am 5 month away from finishing my degree in Funeral Services. I am on the older side of the typical funeral services student, but doing very well. The school was contacted recently by a reporter to do an article about older women entering the profession. Me and three other ladies in my class did it and had a blast doing the interview. I got an e-mail this week that the article was picked up by the magazine and it will appear in October. We are having a photo shoot next week. I will post then which magazine and when is available at the stands so that you guys can see it. I am so excited. I have never before being in a magazine. I am not sure it will help me get a job, but it can not hurt. I guess there is a light at the end of the tunnel after all.

It doesn't matter if you are older or not, you set a goal and not only accomplished it but exceeded it. I write a lot of editorials in our local paper. When I went to apply for a volunteer position, once I mentioned my name, they asked if I was the one from the newspaper, I said yes, and they put me in a special position of dealing with the public. I didn't have to do a thing, my writing did it for me. Many good wishes and blessing are sent your way.

earthwalker 07-03-2011 04:29 PM

That's great, as mentioned earlier, this can only help you in securing a position once your studies are complete. All the very best over the next five months, keep going as you are now and they will be queuing up to employ you:).

cathyvv 07-03-2011 07:48 PM

The way I look at things is this: If you didn't get this education because you're older, you'd still be older but not have the education. So glad you 'went for it' and are successful.

BETTY62 07-03-2011 09:58 PM

Congratulations! And, yes, that article will be the best resume you could ever have! I, too, returned to school late in life to get a degree in social work. A columnist from the local paper was looking for someone to interview on "why someone would go into a notoriously low-paying job like social work." He happened to ask one of my professors who suggested he ask ME! a couple of months later while I was waiting my turn for an interview at an agency, I picked up their monthly newsletter and there was the article! Yes, I was hired and 18 months later when I was being promoted, my supervisor put a copy of the article on my desk with a note congratulating me and saying "Look how far you have come!"
Best wishes to you!

Stitchnripper 07-04-2011 04:56 AM

Congratulations on your accomplishment! There is no such thing as being too old to begin a new career, from one who has been there (2, 3, 4? times). I worked for a cemetery/mortuary and Loved, Loved, Loved that job. You will find it so rewarding and there will be no lack of business.

vivoaks 07-04-2011 11:11 AM
