have you checked your bank account latley?

I thought I might inform the folks that got emails of their information being hacked by some of the companies they have order from on line.
Now is a good time to check your bank accounts and be sure that you are not being some ones else's piggy bank.

This is what I have going on right now.

Charges listed from the following are not mine and my bank is doing research to find these people:

Ron Brown Scholar Fund, Charlottesville, VA
Hearth Inn, Burlington FL NY

According to the bank, these two are feeler charges, just something small so the person knows the card works. Then they go for the bigger charges. which in my case is:

MYCANNET.COM

From what I can find out this is from a telemarketing company but I can't swear to that. It's just what I see listed on my bank statement.

Anyway, all these charges have been traced to over seas transactions. It appears that the criminals hack the accounts here in the states and then sell the information to people overseas. Since the laws governing overseas transaction are so bad the banks have a hard time tracking these people down but they will still be able to get you banking records corrected. But you MUST report these charges within I think it's 30 days from the date the charges were done.

SO EVERYONE, PLEASE CHECK YOU BANKING ACCOUNTS< NOW!!!!

Always a good idea to check your bank accounts. Look out for sneaky bank charges as well as other criminal activity.

I ck'd and found I only had $117.00 left. no one's fault, i'm just broke. I did however get an email from some company about online payments. never heard of them and didn't open it. didn't delete it just yet either. I get telemarketer calls a lot and always go in and file a complaint, I noticed on the Do Not Call list they now have a warning about idiots calling people to help them get onto the list over the phone. Not going to happen.

We have been hit a couple times. The last one was after I placed an order online with Walmart. Someone used out debit card at Match.com and then tried to use it at Hotels.com. The Match.com went through because it was a small amount, $35 but the Hotels.com didn't because it was $1500 and didn't fit our spending patterns. Thankfully the credit union caught it and called us. We were reimbursed for the $35 and the 2 $1.00 that did go through on Hotels.com.

Our Discover card was also hit but it didn't have any credit available since we keep it small. I didn't even know it had happened until we got new cards yesterday.

OCquilter 04-13-2013 11:24 AM

We had a couple of $50 gift card charges on our Visa. Ironic thing is they were the last charges on our old number. The bank had just issued new cards due to a compromise of some kind on a retailer. BofA wouldn't tell us the retailer's name. Sure would like to know so I don't use them again. We have already been credited the fraud amount. Seems to be so common that the bank doesn't even question us. I am in CA, the cards were purchased in OR.

momto5 04-13-2013 01:41 PM

I check mine daily since I live in the "Queen of all hacking" states, SC. I think we're on everyone's hit list "just because"...someone has even hacked a lot of our IRS accounts...now that, takes NERVE! My Mom used to say she didn't know what this world was coming to....and I have to agree with her analysis. People are somethin' else these days!

Jingle 04-13-2013 05:46 PM

I got a call almost two months ago. Someone bought something from a Walmart a good distance from us. Over $356. That went through then tried twice to charge something for over $900.00 and that was denied. Someone had gotten our credit card number, we both had our cards. They closed that account and opened another.
I check our accounts several times a week. Their security is even hard for me to use bank site.
Last time I used my card was for Craftsy. I have no idea if they are involved. The crooks also applied for credit cards, that bank denied because of errors in some critical information.
It is easier to steal from others then get a job and earn money to buy what they want.

BellaBoo 04-13-2013 06:33 PM

DH and I both have LifeLock and Fraud Alert from the credit score company. I cancelled my Discover. It are too easy for low lifes to get personal info over the phone about your account. I use a local bank debit card and American Express. That's all. DH has different cards he likes to use.

kuntryquilter 04-14-2013 03:16 AM

Check your credit card accounts often also. I didn't have any charges on mine that didn't belong to me, but someone stole all of my bonus points. The credit card company replaced them and issued me a new card, they are the ones that caught the theft.

lovelyl 04-14-2013 04:34 AM

Last month I found two charges on my credit card statement from "Cashland Express" it also said cash equivalency on it. I called the number listed and got the message invalid number. The charges were made a week apart for small amounts, so i am guessing they were trying it out and the next charge could have been a whopper! The credit card company gave us back the money, which was around $200. It is a pain having to get a new card number, but I am glad we got our money back.

Ladies, do yourselves a favor and set up a paypal account. I got hit a few months ago after purchasing a quilt pattern online from ToaduSew. Luckily, my bank noticed a 75 cent charge and refused it. Then they tried a charge over $350. and the bank also refused that one and called me within 5 minutes of the transaction on a sunday morning. The bank issued me a new debit card and I set up a paypal account. That way, nobody gets to see my debit card info.

jbj137 04-14-2013 06:20 AM

My Discover was hit several months ago.
Discover called me on a Sunday to chceck out transcations.
1st one for a $1.00 was an experiment to see if it worked.
2nd was for $99.00 to load music on an I-pod.
I do not have either.

We are in SC that had the breach and I do not know if this had anything to do with it,but

someone tried to get into my sister's 401K at Wells Fargo and they stopped it.

cindyb 04-14-2013 06:45 AM

Don't feel so secure with a Paypal Account. My boss has one and it got hacked TWICE!!

I am pretty careful about who I order from and usually go through paypal if I can. That way I have double protection. Navy Federal is pretty good about calling and asking about charges that are unusual. So far, knock on wood, I haven't had an issue.

gramacheri 04-14-2013 08:42 AM

We had $19,000 charged onto our credit account for "solar energy products!" If these people would try to put as much effort into legal pursuits they would probably make lots of money and not have to look over their shoulders all the time!

LINDARIZZ 04-14-2013 08:54 AM

NEVER USE YOUR DEBIT CARD ONLINE!
i have worked at a Bank for the last 20 years. I have witnessed so much online fraud with customers using their Visa debit cards that are tied to their bank accounts! DH and I use ONE dedicated credit card for online purchases only. Easy to track your balance and charges online anytime and we aren't putting our personal banking information out there for the unsavory to hack into.

solstice3 04-14-2013 09:13 AM

will do...thanks!!!

omaluvs2quilt 04-14-2013 09:49 AM

I worked in banking for many years and COMPLETELY agree!!! I only use my Discover with the "generate secure account number" feature or Paypal. If your card is compromised, it's much easier to deal with a credit card re-issue than changing your whole bank account.

I have set up alerts at my bank and credit cards. They let me know if there is unusual activity. btw I got text msg on my phone from American Express and I thought it was spam, I did not respond to the text, but I called the number on the back of my card. I found out someone had tried to buy airline tickets. AmX did not let it happen, and let me know about it. I quickly got a replacement card.

CAS49OR 04-14-2013 10:12 AM

Paypal is great because you are 100% compensated if anything happens. They always give the buyer the benefit of the doubt if something happens. Do know that Paypal will not email you to ask you to confirm your account identity. If you ever receive an email about something like that do not click the link in the email. Open your web browser and go to Paypal site instead.

I am happy to see more and more sites accepting Paypal option because I know I'm covered.

I used to just use it on eBay, and they refunded my money, no questions asked, when I had an issue with a seller.

I forgot to mention that last year my Wells Fargo debit card was hacked. It was a transaction at Michael's. Those stores had an issue for a while. I googled and found out about it and told Wells Fargo, and insisted they return my money immediately. They did.

At first they said the charge was being investigated. I told them since it is a known issue they should credit my account immediately.

coopah 04-14-2013 11:19 AM

I only use one credit card and had it replaced replaced recently. My bank gave me their direct phone number which I just used last week. Seems that someone has used my old, old, old (as in 8 years or so ago) credit card number to charge $85 worth of something. I had no idea of the charge until a statement came. The fraud department is checking it out...and it was charged in Texas which I haven't been in since 1985!! We have always cut up (before shredders) old statements and credit cards. How this old number was found, I have no clue. Discouraging to think other's want to steal my money.

Wildernessties 04-14-2013 11:29 AM

I've had it happen where a small amount was charged, like $9.95. I forget the details now but credit card co told me that people charge the small amount because it won't raise any alert flags so they get away with it unless person checks their statement. Always check your credit card statement for any charge you don't recognize.

Noiseynana 04-14-2013 11:40 AM

Well I got it too. A 14 year old kid that lived down the road crawled in my doggie door and got on my computer. He ordered books, joined book clubs and ordered a $900.00 set of cookware. I think he was trying to help me cause they were all to come to my home. hehehe When I got the emails confirming the orders I called them all. According to the police he and his family ( they were all just alike) were ordered to leave the county or go to jail. Don't know why they did it that way but they are gone to Lousianna now. Glad they are gone. NOw I have a master password that I have to enter in order to use the computer. There is one different on the lap top.

mjhaess 04-14-2013 12:29 PM

I know there is a lot of this going on....I had my account stopped last month by the bank because they said it had been hacked...They sent me a new card with my new account number...I was shocked...I hate to buy anything on line because of safety issues....My son-in-law lost over thwo thousand from his pay-pal so you see..nothing is safe...

nygal 04-14-2013 12:39 PM

At the end of January I had two of my debit cards compromised. That was enough!! I hope it never happens to me again. Those cards are history now.

carolynjo 04-14-2013 03:34 PM

We, too, were charged hundreds of miles away from where we live. A new bank wrinkle to look out for: our bank took half of our measly interest earnings because we didn't have a debit card. They wanted us to get a debit card and use it at least 10 times a month in order to keep our "interest" earnings. Needless to say, we have joined a credit union.

tlpa 04-14-2013 05:15 PM

Thanks for the warning. I know my mom checks her bank account every day. One day she found 2 $1 charges she didn't recognize. Called the bank and froze her account or something like that. A hassle yes, but probably saved lots of $$ in the long run.

tessagin 04-15-2013 06:13 AM

Bank of America is good about not informing one about retailers where a card was used inappropriately. After all your card was the one used. Confidentiality, my eye.

mindless 04-15-2013 08:13 AM

I've had 2 cards replaced in the last 2 months also.
Another thing to look out for is ID theft stolen from young children. Those of you that have little kids or grandkids should keep a close eye on their credit reports. We are forced to get them soc. sec. cards immediately now, & their IDs are easily stolen because no one ever checks their credit records. Babies don't use credit cards....right? Most are never checked until the child is old enough to begin using debit/credit cards, or apply for student loans etc. An ideal situation for thieves.

ptquilts 04-15-2013 10:49 AM

I just switched the bank account associated with Paypal, to one that I don't keep any money in. I have heard too many horror stories. I will still use Paypal, but if something goes wrong, there is only so much money they can get.

And to everyone who is wondering, "How did they get my CC number?" -- they don't need to - they can make up numbers until they hit on one that works. And that one might be your number. The wonders of our modern age.

KayS 04-15-2013 12:48 PM

I have a seperate account for any online ordering. I only keep about $50 in that account and transfer $ in if I am going to place an order. If anyone gets that # they won't get much. I also check all my accounts on a regular basis.

caspharm 04-15-2013 02:08 PM

My credit card company is very protective of my account. They either email or call me on any activity that appears to be unusual on my account to check to see if it's true.

DebbieG 04-15-2013 02:08 PM

My Master Card/Debit Card was compromised a month or so ago....I'm very leary now of ordering anything on line, because IT WAS MY CARD

donnalynett 04-15-2013 03:30 PM

Buy a prepaid credit card to use online. You can purchase them in just about any amount.

jcrow 04-15-2013 03:45 PM

I had to cancel my debit card because 'Lifelock', who I didn't have an account with, took money out of my account without my authority. I was shocked and called them and told them what they had done and they were speechless. They apologized and put the money back within 72 hours but I had to cancel my card because it had become compromised. I am rethinking doing any business online. You can't trust any company!

Quilterfay 04-15-2013 04:54 PM

When we were south this winter we had these charges some through for ITunes. There was 6 debits for the same amount. I phoned our credit union and they had me phone ITunes. So this was like late on a Wednesday. There was no way to phone them so I sent them an email. Well by the next morning the debits had all been refunded. So I think ITunes must of been compromised. We didn't have any other problems thank goodness!

angelfeather43 04-15-2013 07:39 PM

I check my bank account daily, and pay off my credit cards monthly. I keep my (two) credit card(s) purchase receipts for the month in an envelope and check them against the statement. I refuse new cards that companies (in the Mall) try to give you for a small, one-time savings on a purchase, and nothing comes out of my bank account automatically. I figured out 'less is better' as far as credit cards go....if a merchant doesn't take one of my two cards, they don't get my business. My shredder gets a workout from the credit card offers and anything else that comes in the mail with my name and address on it, that I didn't ask for. I know I'm not home free and something could still pop up, but I'm cutting the odds where I can.

Chasing Hawk 04-15-2013 09:20 PM

Yeah I just checked mine.....It's $3400 light..........damm state taxes.....LOL

Good news is Uncle Sam owes US money.......lol

rebeljane 04-16-2013 04:49 AM

Only yesterday we had a call from someone asking my partner to give them our full key card number, they gave us the first 4 which I believe are Australian identification. They said they were from an Aust. Govt. Dept. that is contacting all bank users who are supposed to get refunds from the banks for fee overcharges. He did not give the info and passed the phone to me, she said she wanted to talk to my partner as he was the account holder and I said well you can talk to me as it is a joint account. I told her to ring me back in an hour after I had talked to my bank. Guess what - no phone call. SCAMMER
