Do you think that when you called the fabric "crepe" that it might also be called Plisse??? Because I have some and don't know what to do with it. I do remember making my girls some summer sun dresses with that same kind of fabric years ago and it stayed really soft.

In the summer, the crepe blankets make very nice cover ups for nursing mothers. I like to make the blankets 45" square to give a little more room and round the edges. They are also nice to cover up a baby when the weather is hot. The baby is covered but not as hot as blankets made out of other types of fabric. You can always add layers, single, double flannel or a quilt.

I take a yard of fabric, turn under the edges twice and then do a decorative stitch around the edges to hold the edges down. Is that considered a receiving blanket? It is not as hot for the baby in the summer. Then need something over them, but a blanket or piece of flannel is too hot.

Missouri Star Quilting Company has a video for making a blanket. I also saw another video where the demonstrator used a rolling hem foot to make a rolled hem all around the blanket. You could do that with a really good piece of flannel for babies.

I fold the edges over about 1 1/2 inches and miter the corners.

I give these as gifts and they are really appreciated since the usual 30" square blankets are too small for older then 3mo sold. From the extra 8-9" that you cut off you can make matching burp cloths by flolding them in half and stitching or by lining them with terry cloth. Or you can sew then leftover strips together and make a baby quilt with them.
One other way I've made a blanket is to take 2 pieces of flannel placing them wrong sides together, I usually make them about 40" square, round the corners, sew around the edge about 1" in, and then rag the edges. I sew an "X" all the way across from one edge to the other to keep fabric from shifting. Wash and the ragged edges look real cute. |
I have also made a few using the Missouri star quilt pattern. Theywere very easy to make and a good size.

I make them frequently. I only use 1 layer of flannel, but I cut them square so they are 40 x 40 or 42 x 42, depending on the fabric I use. The Moms that I make them for love the bigger sizes. The ones you buy at the store are much smaller.

Go to the Missouri Star Quilt company tutorial called The Self Binding Baby Quilt (Receiving Blanket). This is fast, fun, and so easy. I've made a few of these and you can adjust the size easily. Sometimes I do put in an extra layer of flannel for more warmth. I usually stitch a heart in the middle to hold them together.
