I had the worst headache today - right behind one of my eyes - I expected to find a large spike sticking out of my head. I hate when I get headaches - they really knock me down sometimes for a couple of days - I went to the Dr but they told me there is nothing they can do (I went to two different docs). Any body else get them like that? What do you do for them?

I get them when I have spent too much time on the internet or close work with sewing for hours on end. The doctor said to take breaks. If you use your eyes close up, every hour you need to do something using your eyes for distance. Take your breaks. This has helped me.

I use a warm pack. I know its going to sounds strange. Take a sandwich bag, add 1/2 cup cornmeal, seal, heat for 10sec at a time in microwave til warm, shake(it gets hot spots). Apply over the painful area. If its sinsus it seems to ease it off.Hot showers aimed on that spot, help also. Here is another strange suggestion. Take your earlobe and pull it away from your cheek area, rotate in a circular pattern in both directions while pulling out slightly. It will take a lot of tension out. I take one pain pill if all else fails. Work most of the time for me

:D

Dehydration causes headaches like that for me. Try drinking 2-3 large glasses of water.............

I don't get them like this, but my DH does. They're called Cluster Headaches and he explains it as there is a railroad spike sticking out of his head that someone keeps pounding in. He uses oxygen for them and that's the only thing that has helped.

Sounds to me like one of my migraines. That is one of the symptoms. Pain in either one half or one quarter of the head, like a nail sticking in your brain. Sometimes upset stomach and even sometimes actual nausea and vomiting. Sun or loud noises makes the pain worse. Even moving can make it hurt more.

Some people have what is called a Prodrome. This can be some sort of eye problem. One of my sisters and one daughter have frozen black lightening flashing before their eyes, and when it finally gets to the other side they know the pain will start. Some people lose view of circular spots, parts of faces will be missing and white blank parts of papers or books. I have tunnel vision, fog around my eye sight. One male nurse said his started looking like he was viewing the world through a kaleidoscope, and then his pain would start.

One doctor I was referred to said as soon as the pain started, immediately start keeping a careful diary, going back 3 or 4 days BEFORE the pain started and putting down every thing you ate, drank, the weather, tired or angry, etc. And in a couple of weeks a strong pattern would show up. My worst foods are of course my favorites, hard cheese and souse meat. Also bad are nitrates and nitrites , as are fermented foods. And chocolate!
Unfortunately, I was told that we quite often crave what we are allergic to.

Sorry about the lecture, but I had migraines for so many years that it made me lose a lot of my favorite times with DH and kids. On the average, mine lasted 3 days, flat out in bed in a darkened bedroom with an ice pack on my head. Once and sometimes twice a month. And often staggering to the bathroom to unload my last few meals! Not a time that one wants to remember. Generally it is much easier after the 40s or 50s.

i get migraines...luckily rarely, but when they happen it's bad...my dr found me something called Maxalt..i call it "magic migraine pill" they 'fix' me ... when i get a migraine it puts me right down, if i raise my head i am throwing up...i get one of the magic (melts-you put it in your mouth and let it desolve) crawl into bed and when i wake up next head ache is gone. took a long time and lots of tests ect before they found something that works for me...but they really work well..magic! i don't leave home without carrying one with me...just in case. my headaches we found triggers for and i can most of the time avoid them...once in awhile though...omg...bad bad headaches are bad!

Romona has given you some good advice. I too went through the migraine merry-go-round. When mine started, they hit me one day out of the blue with no warning, and I thought my head would explode. That along with nausea, vomiting and nails in my eyes. I would even wake up from a sound sleep vomiting. After 2 neurologist, ultrasound, CT scan, etc, etc and a daily headache....9 months later the docs finally figured out the correct dose of meds to control mine. I usually don't get them unless I have a lot of stress.

Someplace must have had a sale on those spikes, I have one sticking out of my left eye now as well.

So true! My headaches got much better when I retired from teaching & was able to start drinking more water. Many don't realize teachers can't take bathroom breaks whenever they want.

Usually I try the hot showers, hot packs on my eyes - excedrin migraine (otc) and keep quiet in a dark room lying down. Mine usually last 3 days - if I am lucky they last less. One doc told me that stress - working with my hands etc - causes the muscles to tighten up and they come from your shoulders and wind around to the front of your head and cause these pains - well I have been working non stop on 3 quilts for the last week - I don't know - I have always been prone to headaches - thought after I had sinus surgery (about 10yrs ago) that they would go away. Nope. I don't work right now (semi-retired) that doesn't seem to make a difference. No more monthly visits (hysterectomy - 5 yrs ago) perhaps the Doc could cut off my head. Just kidding but I am tired of these headaches.

I'm so sorry for everyone who has that much pain.Once in a great while i have a headache.

QuiltMania 02-19-2011 07:24 AM

My mom, my youngest son and I all have migraines. We each have one of the 3 kinds of migraines -- mom has complex migraines, I have classic migraines and DS has common migraines. It is very important to keep a headache log -- every day you need to write down what you eat and drink, how much sleep you get, what the weather is like and whether you have a headache. You also need to write down what symptoms you are experiencing. Then take all that information to a good neurologist who specializes in migraines. DS never got any real relief until we went to the Michigan Neurological and Head Pain Clinic in Ann Arbor.

Same here. I have great sympathy for those of you who get them. I've been very lucky. My Mom and sis had wicked ones but I never did.

Migranes started when I had a hysterectomy....in fact they started in the hospital..My medical file says "hormone related".They'd wake me at 4am, last exactly 24hrs,then start redceding. From beginning to end it was about 3 days wasted. They put me in bed & what terrible things they are. No wonder they're called sick headaches!

Nothing worked until the Dr prescribed pills that dissolve under the tongue at 1st sign.Mine would come in bunches, every day for a wk was the worst. Now, it's mostly one at a time.I tried for yrs to find the triggers, keeping records. The thing that helped the most was avoiding all artificial sweetners. That is the only thing that works for me.

Sadiemae 02-19-2011 02:30 PM

I had terrible migraines until I had my hysterectomy. I very rarely get them now, maybe one a month. I have tried some of the drugs and many home remedies, but for some strange reason the thing that works best for me is Excedrin Migraine and a regular Coke. It has to be Coke, no other brand will work for me. I try to keep a Coca Cola in the refrigerator so it is there when I need it.

NCquilter 02-19-2011 02:33 PM

I get terrible migraines. It seems to run in the family. I get them so bad that I usually end up vomitting and then that makes my head hurt even worse. I've tried different migraine meds, but nothing seems to knock them out. Normally I just have to get away from light and sound.

Ramona Byrd 02-19-2011 02:48 PM

-----------------------------------------
Very few people really believe that the artificial sweeteners are as bad as they really are. Aspartame is the worst, and there's new ones coming out every so often, as well as the worst ones being renamed. Aspartame is being re named Amino Sweet...doesn't that sound delicious? And High Fructose Corn Syrup is being renamed, they are removing the High Fructose part of it. Too many people getting ideas about how bad it is.

My migraines ran in our family, most of our large family had or has them. And my Mother remarked that her father would come walking home from plowing, with his hands over his eyes and throwing up as he came home to lie down in a dark room.

I generally carry a codeine type of prescription with me when I travel, but now can stop it in the very early stages with aspirin or willow bark, but sometimes I wake up with one and that is hard to get rid of. I try to vary the over the counter pain killers because of their own damages when over done.

plainpat 02-19-2011 03:03 PM

I seldom drink soda, but even then, it's never diet soda or any food with artificial sweetners.
So far as I could find out, I am the only one in my family with migranes. They are rare as I get older.Probably have no hormones left :)

quilting memaw 02-19-2011 03:08 PM

My hubby gets them, mold count is always high when he does...go to a good allergist.

Shelbie 02-19-2011 09:43 PM

I would advise you to get your thyroid checked. I used to have dreadful migraines (at least once a week) that lasted for several hours and included throwing up. Once I was put on thyroid medication they completely stopped. My doctor thought that the two shouldn't be connected but they were for me.

sewnsewer2 02-20-2011 02:11 AM

I get migrains! I swear by excedrine for migraines. Knocks it out within 15 minutes for me.

Yes, I have low thyroid also, have been taking medication for about 8 yrs - its checked periodically - headaches started long before that.

Kimkankwilt 02-20-2011 01:50 PM

My DD used to get terrible headaches until we pinpointed the problem. She is allergic to bananas and avocados, which happen to be 2 of her favorite foods. She cannot even eat food that touches avocado or she will get a headache.
