My father is 95 and has worn hearing aides for quite awhile. He goes to an audiologist recommended to him by his
family doctor. He wears a hearing aide in both ears and it is a tiny tube that goes into the ear but the mechanism fits behind the ear. He said it is a vast improvement over the one that was in the ear. It is operated with a remote control
He has all his marbles and is quite sharp. Check with your family doctor or a doctor you can trust that you like and ask for a recommendation. Also an EENT doc would be able to recommend as well. Does your mother in law have one?

Yes she needs hearing aids she has been reading our lips for several years now and she is the one that is asking for them. She hates missing out on so many things that are going on just because she can't hear well. We figure if it will make her life better even if its for a couple of years it is well worth the money. Her income is low but she has always been a saver so hopefully we can get her something that works good that she can afford. I also appreciate all the advise it has all helped and we will be taking her to a audiologist that is not connected with a store. Now to find a good one in our area. But first I will check and see if her insurance pays anything toward this.

Visited TX last year for GD's college graduation. One daughter surprised me and took me to
Walmart there in Denton I think, and bought me a hearing aid over the counter for about $400.oo
and it works nicely. I'd complained that my cat had been stealing and hiding my hearing aids, so
she gave me a spare, which works nicely. They have left and right sides...I got the right side since
it's the weaker one...I find my old ones every now and then and now have a small wooden box
to keep them in...cat watches me but can't get the box open!!!

I went for a test a few months back and I need hearing aids, but at the recommended $6500. I decided not to opt for them yet. My MD suggested COSTCO also...she said she has many patients that are happy with the ones from there. Think I might go to Costco soon.

Also....you always have the right to a 30 day trial period. So if they don't work well...don't buy!

My Mom got hers a few years back, do your homework ahead of time.. What type of hearing loss is it.. as the different types work on different causes. Be prepared to go back for adjustments till they get the setting right. At first my Mom's was set so loud that just closing a cabinet was like a door slamming. She still can not hear certain voices ( there is a range or certain frequencies that no aid will enhance). Get the range of loss diagnosed before your shop for a hearing aid. Make sure the cleanings and follow up adjustments are included. Ask for a satisfaction gaurentee. It 's a lot to spend and if she is not happy with the first one ... its often the reason they settle for less as the cost of trying another is prohibitive.

Thanks for all the information on hearing aid. Did take her to a ENT doctor. Everything is working out good. She will have her hearing aids to try out in a couple of weeks. I really appreciate all the good information I got and thanks again it really helped.
