Has any one out there broke a little toe? Overnight, I missed a step going downstairs, it was kind of dark, and I jammed it against the wood railing. Today, it's turning black and it's bent a little. My husband remembers when he broke his toe, and he said the doctors can't do any thing for that. He thought it would be better in a week, I can wait that out, but I love walking, and will miss that. You have helped me in so many ways before, any advice or shared experience would be greatly appreciated. I ice it, but don't want to stay off of it for long.

Honchey 08-05-2011 04:13 PM

You need to tape your little toe to the toe next to it...I don't know how long to keep it that way. Ice it and keep it elevated whenever possible.

JeannieT 08-05-2011 04:17 PM

I dropped a 2 x 12 wooden car ramp on my foot and broke my big toe and the 2 next to it......that was Mother's Day weekend and my big toe is still not right and the two little ones are weak......Good luck.

lfw045 08-05-2011 04:30 PM

Just have to wait it out. I've broken my little toe before and it is painful but just have to wait it out. Keep your foot up as much as possible. Your hubby was right.

TanyaL 08-05-2011 04:31 PM

Drs don't put little toes in casts, but if you don't have the broken bones aligned properly and taped and supported corrected then it will never feel the same again in your life. You will feel the "incorrect" little toe everytime you put on a shoe that touches the toe. It takes about 6 weeks for bones to knit back together from an average break. More if you don't take special consideration and care of the break.

bearisgray 08-05-2011 04:31 PM

It might be dislocated.

When I broke my toe, after it was x-rayed, the doctor pulled/jerked/snapped it back into place.

Then it was taped in place, and I was given a special sandal. (Wish I could another one - it was comfy!)

Still took a while for it to feel better, but it would have been a lot worse leaving it dislocated.

Tink's Mom 08-05-2011 04:34 PM

Once you tape it to another toe, it will not hurt quite as much...for some reason, when it is stabilized some of the pain lessens.

Leota 08-05-2011 04:34 PM

Go to dr. have it x-rayed and get a shoe... I broke my pinky toe...in the dark ... kicked the laundry hamper that had books in it.. wore the shoe for about 4 weeks... no problem...

nance-ell 08-05-2011 04:52 PM

I broke my little toe on June 11. I couldn't buddy tape it. Every time I tried I would be in excrutiating pain all day long. I wore slip on tennis shoes and limped to keep my foot straight and not bend the toe in any way. It was about 4 - 5 weeks before I could walk normally. A few weeks in I started this thread: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-134351-1.htm I was feeling like I would never stop hurting and wanted to hear from others to make sure my experience was "normal" under the circumstances. It was.

My toe is still swollen and tender and I can't move it much. I only have 3 pair of shoes that I can wear comfortably. Unfortunately, it just takes time, but it does get better.

If your toe is bent abnormally, you may want to see a doctor. They can't cast it, but they may have to adjust your toe so that it will heal correctly. Good luck... and believe me when I say I feel your pain!

Yep, dropped a big glass jar of mayo. Little toe and that side of foot turned 20 shades of purple and hurt like you know what. Went to doc next morning for x-rays. Seriously, he said the only thing to do would be a reduction....a what?....remove the toe. I opted for second option and like he promised it was a slow process for healing. It took several weeks of soaking in ice water 3x a day and keeping the foot, from ankle down, wrapped in ace bandage before I could wear more than thongs on that foot. Little toe never regained complete feeling and it turns inward (hard to paint). That was worse than my fractured ankle 20 years later. Hope yours heals much quicker!!

P.S. I don't why feet problems are so dang difficult and long to heal!!

luckylindy333 08-05-2011 05:04 PM

Go to a foot doctor if you can!

mim 08-05-2011 05:13 PM

I broke a foe while on holiday in the Cotswolds when someone dropped a 2 liter bottle pointy side down, from the top shelf in a shop.

I was backpacking and hiking -- I took lots of aspirin -- and kept going. No sense wasting a good 2 weeks vacation.

Actually the worst was climbing in the Malvern Hills. I slid down a hill on my backside, it hurt so.

BTW -- the quilt show at the fairgrounds was the first show I ever went to. Such creativity!!! lots of designs and ideas I hadn't thought of. And I had been quilting for 20 years.

Quilting wasn't as popular back then as it is now

Good luck -- and strap up your foot if you can -- ace bandage is good -- and keep your foot up!!

Go to the doctor, have it realigned and taped (pulled/jerked/snapped as bearisgray said).
When I broke mine it was at right angles to my foot. The doctor did his thing and my toe is OK today. It does not tell me about the weather so he must have done it correctly.

Hope itt heals quick!!

Kicked a couch with one little toe and a floor jack with the other...trust me when I say you can's move EITHER of those things with your little toe. Did the slap it back in place and tape it to your next two toes. I agree with Tink's mom...for some reason that makes it feel better.

KS quilter 08-05-2011 06:46 PM

It has been years and years since I have had a broken toe.
But when I did I remember the Dr. saying to be sure and wear a shoe with a hard toe.

MissM 08-05-2011 07:40 PM

I broke my big toe two and half months ago, went to the doctor, wore a boot for two months and my toe is still bruised. I can only wear flat shoes, and the toe is still tender to the touch.

amma 08-05-2011 08:34 PM

It may not hurt to have the doc take a look, if it is dislocated instead of broken  :D:D:D

quilt-fanatic 08-06-2011 12:43 AM

After jamming my 2nd toe on metal coffee table leg (while on a cruise), it was broken and Dr kept x-raying it every 2 weeks. I asked why and he said if it didn't heal properly, it would require surgery!!! Now I had another toe on other foot that didn't get seen by Dr and is crooked. Better go see the Dr.

SueSew 08-06-2011 02:17 AM

Ice compression elevation and rest, just like an ankle. I have broken a couple toes over the years (clumsy and osteoporotic!!)

Do take care. Mine never went back quite right and I have shoes that won't fit properly. As a shoe addict, this is killing me and I am keeping them anyway hoping my feet will shrink or someday I'll have surgery.

ugh ugh! I'm sorry for your pain ( it hurts a lot more than people think!) and hope you heal properly.

the old one 08-06-2011 03:55 AM

Because I don't wear shoes in the house during the summer, I often have broken the little toes, just wear flat sandals and it will heal--a big toe is another situation, completely. Never had to deal with one of them. piecefully, the old one

My toe was pointing south when the rest of my toes were pointing west - stupid door frame jumped out and attacked my bare foot!

I WAS able to tape it to my foot and that reduced the pain immensely - HOWEVER - it was still dislocated when we got to the emergency room - and I am so glad that I had it taken care of.

In my opinion, it is not worth taking a chance on having foot pain for the rest of one's life.

decky 08-06-2011 05:07 AM

I didn't break my little toe, but did break one of the bones behind my big toe. The doctor told me it could take up to 6 months to heal. I think I broke it in January and have been wearing a dancers pad for the last 3 months, still hurts but not as bad or as often as before.

peppermint31 08-06-2011 05:07 AM

guess I was lucky when I ran into a stool and had my little toe cocked out to the side. I just iced it and taped it for several days and tho it was horribly
bruised it healed fine but does tell me when bad weather is coming

Rann 08-06-2011 06:18 AM

Cut out the toe part on your tennis shoes.

This will work great until you can see the podiatrist.

annieb 08-06-2011 07:04 AM

My DH says I have square feet and they look like duck feet, hence I have broken my little toes a lot. I just kick something, look down and it's at a right angle, I bend it back and tape it to it's neighbor. The worst I did was trip over a cat, and in the process of catching myself before I fell on her, backslapped my refrigerator, didn't even hurt, but then couldn't open my middle finger, had to have day surgery to correct it, came home that afternoon and kicked off my shoes headed for the bed and tripped on a different cat(supposed to be outsiders, NOT) and broke my little toe. Rough few weeks, but then I'm used to it, I am not a graceful, girly gal!!

granny64 08-06-2011 07:34 AM

Tape it to the next toe. There is nothing that can be done for a broken toe.

SugarCookie 08-06-2011 08:13 AM

My Godchild broke her little toe and the doctor put her in one of those "shoes". If you go to your local thrift store, there will be a couple of those for a few dollars instead of the $50 at the pharmacy. She wore that for a while and now all is better. Good luck and be careful.

A week of being taped should be about right; take off the tape and walk around barefoot a bit---it will tell you whether it needs more time or not. I am unfortunately very experienced with broken little toes! (OH----be sure the tape isn't too tight. You're taping it to the next toe for support....don't cut off the blood flow!)

dottientx 08-06-2011 10:58 AM

I say 'ditto' to all of the above. My toes have all been there and done that at sometime in my life. Takes time to heel even if you're cautious. Good op for you to take it easy and stay off that foot as much as you can. Some neat ways to pass the time is to sew, piece, quilt, knit, read books, have chocolate in any form, nap and any other neat ways you can think of. I don't advise having too many drinks of 'joy juice' as that may make your pain last longer than usual if you'd happen to stub that toe again. Good Luck

Joyce L 08-06-2011 12:01 PM

I broke my little toe when I kicked the door fram coming out of the bathroom, in the middle of the night. Dr. taped it to the one beside it and gave me a shoe to wear. Didn't take long to heal.

Joyce L.

PS: Fell off the side walk two weeks ago and broke my foot. Did not get a cast. Just another shoe.

knlsmith 08-06-2011 12:03 PM

Yup, broke mine last year. OUCH! Tape it to the next toe. Ice on and of 15 minutes as much as you need to help pain 1st day or 2. Stay off as much as possible. It will be super painful for almost a week, but then it will be much better literally overnight.

luce321 08-06-2011 03:08 PM

I broke my little toe years ago and went to the ER. They told me all they do for it is tape it to the next toe. That's what they did.

oldcottontop 08-06-2011 03:13 PM

I have broken both my little toes..at sepate times and years apart. The first time I went to the Drs., they taped it to the one next to it, then taped the whole end of my foot, gave me crutches and told me to stay off it for ten days. My oldest one was 18 mos old (he is now 50), my husband was overseas and I am suppose to stay off it? That lasted until I got home. I did leave it bandaged up for the three days but had to take a bath. When I took the bandages of, ALL my toes were black and blue and so sore. It seemds like it took forever for me to be able to get around on it.

The second broke toe happened just a few years ago. I did go to the Dr but they said there was nothing to do with it except to wear shoes with a good solid sole. Everything was all better in a few weeks.

Wanabee Quiltin 08-06-2011 03:18 PM

I broke my big toe dropping a bowling ball on it. There is nothing they can do for it. Wrap your toe to the next so it won't develop a 'kink' in it. Keep it elevated and put ice on it to stop the swelling. Pain goes away in a week. The entire bottom of my foot turned black. The ball actually bounced twice on the toe so it was really broken !

you have to 'anchor' it or the break can heal crooked.

mburdell 08-06-2011 07:19 PM

I broke the smallest toe by ramming it into a landscaping boulder. I was put into a special walking shoe that I wore for weeks so I could still teach.

1screech 08-06-2011 07:45 PM

Yep, those black little sausages do hurt. I missed the last step and broke one ankle and tore ligaments in the other ankle. Be glad it was just a toe. Takes about a week for it to fell better. :(
