We have two almost three year old dogs. (Bichon/Maltese/Terrier) They are brothers from the same litter. One we've had since he was a baby, the other we got about a year ago when the people that have the mom passed the house of the adopted parents had him tied to a tree in the snow with no shelter or padding. She is a bus driver and stopped her bus, got off, picked him up and took him home. Being that we had the brother they asked us to take him. We were getting ready to lose our 14 year old English Setter so we agreed to do it.

Everything has gone well over the last year except he has suddenly started to PEE all over!!!!! He didn't do it much except once in a while, but now he's almost seeking out places to pee! He loves peeing on plastic bags, so we bought pee pee pads and put a plastic bag on it, and he uses but he still goes elsewhere!!!

He even got up on the ottoman the other day, where I had a bag with fabric, and PEED ON IT! He's not exclusive to plastic bags, they're just his favorite.

I do NOT know what to do!!!! HELP!!!!!

KerryK 10-19-2011 01:23 PM

Is he neutered? If not, that would probably help. (And oh by the way, kudos to the bus driver and yourself, too, for taking care of this poor little fellow!)

scowlkat 10-19-2011 01:25 PM

Has the vet checked him out? He may have some kind of urinary problem.

Zhillslady 10-19-2011 01:27 PM

Have the vet check for a UTI. Many dogs and cats pee where you will notice to try and get you to see there is a problem.

Prism99 10-19-2011 01:28 PM

I'd take him to the vet first to make sure there's no physical problem. He might need an antibiotic.

After that, he needs re-training. I'd probably use a crate and very frequent trips outside. You can also tie him to you so he has to go wherever you go and can be constantly monitored.

Oh, and you need to treat every place he has peed *extremely* thoroughly with enzyme products. I have used several for cats and so far like Nok Out the best (no odor, no stickiness, works). Cat pee is worse than dog pee, so I think Nok Out would work for you too.

Not an expert here, just what I would do......

Sadiemae 10-19-2011 01:29 PM

I agree, I would have him checked by the vet first. I agree with retraining using a kennel if he has no medical condition. I had to do this for a Mother and puppy. I tried everything and then using a kennel worked like magic. They don't want to lay in their own urine.

What I was going to say. Take him to a vet & go from there.

LLWinston44 10-19-2011 01:38 PM

Yes neutered, and yes checked by the vet. Dangit!

Vet checked recently & no UTI or other illnesses (I'm assuming the vet did specificly test for these?). Hmm...behavioral. Have there been any changes in the home? New people, someone moved out, new pet, lost a pet? Even if this is the root cause, like other said, going back to basic housebreaking is the solution.

sparkys_mom 10-19-2011 01:45 PM

I had friends that had this problem - it came out of the blue. The vet determined the dog had a kidney stone. Once that was taken care of everything went back to normal.

quiltstodo 10-19-2011 01:49 PM

My daughters poodle had this problem after she was fixed. They have medication for it. she actually doesn't know she's going at times. Ask the vet if the medication would help him.

COYOTEMAGIC 10-19-2011 01:54 PM

There are belly wraps that you can use to keep him from going on things. Take it off when you take him out.

Oh I'm TOTALLY going to try that!!! We did take him to the vet because a UTI was my first thought too. I am THINKING it's because of the weather change and that brings him back to memories of being left out in the snow, and he's not a fan of the cold. He, even in the summer, will want to crawl under our blankets. At first I let him, then I realized that he would not come out even though he was panting and sweating. I guess the experience just left him fearful of the cold. That's why I thought the pee pee pads would make him happy...... but he wants to go wherever he wants to go. Totally going to try the belly wraps. Is that something they have at Pets Mart??

-------------------------------------
When our first two cats were still with us, they would BOTH get up in the bathroom sink and pee there when they had kidney problems. We could see the blood in the sinks and off to the vet we would go, both cats screaming with rage...but it fixed that till the next time a few years later. One would be locked out of that bathroom so we could tell which one was guilty.

DoxieMom 10-19-2011 03:34 PM

I have an older male dog that just can't remember where to go or how to let us know. The belly bands I use are wonderful. I line them with inexpensive sanitary napkins. The ones I use are Happy Jack Dog Diapers. BTW: That's him in my Avatar in his younger days...

Tink's Mom 10-19-2011 03:45 PM

Good luck...and don't forget to stick his nose in it...I wipe up accidents with cheap vinegar. We have a piddle pad under the dining room table so that if Tink needs to go and no one is home...

suern3 10-19-2011 03:49 PM

I think kennel training is the only answer. As someone else said, just keep him in there, take him out and directly outside frequently and even maybe a little treat when he goes outside.

Crqltr 10-19-2011 05:49 PM

When our dog did this we took many visits to the vet, they kept treating her for uti, finally one of the older guys examined her and she was full of bladder stones. Her belly was really dragging, no room for pee in the bladder.

After watching many shows on training dogs and reading lots of books, I think this is an outdated philosophy. They are responding more to the tone of your voice than putting their noses in it. Also, remember that dogs will eat their own output, so maybe not so bad to them. We had great success with crate training and my grandpuppies are crate trained with success. It seems cruel to some folks, but, it gives the dogs a level of security.

1000projects 10-19-2011 06:01 PM

We had this problem with our greyhound (rescued). The belly band works great for boy dogs, you can make your own pretty easily. Also, used a command for peeing (park time!) and gave him a treat every time he peed outside for a few weeks. Our dog is super motivated by food so he will do just anything for a treat. (even a crab apple is a treat for him.)

LLWinston44 10-19-2011 06:12 PM

I went online and checked out the belly bands and whipped one up. I'll put it on him tonight and see how he does. It's a very crude model, but if it works I'll make some nicer ones. I'm SOOOOOOO hopeful! lol!!

I really think, after talking to the vet today, that he is just rebelling against the cold, due to his previous treatment. I have to admit that I can sort of relate.... I hATE the cold, it get's in my bones and HURTS. He's just a little guy and if it feels like that to him then I guess I'd want to pee somewhere warm too. lol

I'll keep you posted. and THANKS for all the help! I LOVE this board, and all the people on it! I was talking to my mom a few minutes ago and told her all about how you guys helped me come up with the belly bands and she was so puzzled that I got my help from the Quilting Board. haha.

cdobbert40 10-19-2011 06:33 PM

Good Luck. Don't want to pee on your parade, but I gave up. I have two shitzu's (spelled incorrectly on purpose) and I have yet to get them potty trained. Got the first one when he was 8 wks old and the second one about six months later at 10 wks old. they are now 4 and 5 yrs old. They are crated when no one is home, I take them outside as soon as they are taken out of the crate, make sure they potty, get all excited and praise for "good potty", give them good potty treats make sure they go out every two hours and do the whole good potty thing everytime and then they come inside eat the puppy treat and will lift a leg on a door casing with me standing there watching. I will yell bad potty and put them outside and they will just sit there looking at me. I make sure they are feed at the same time every evening and take them outside an hour later and still they will sneak off and take a dump on the bathroom floor. Both are fixed and do not have any bladder problems. They are just very stubborn shitzu's. I have finally stared using the bands with the cheap sanitary napkins and they wear them whenever they are out of the crate and not outside. Mamma has given up and they will remain in diapers until they die. After 5 years of trying I give up, they win. And it's not one place that they keep marking, it's where ever they decide to hike a leg, and I use enzyme cleaner every time they go inside, they are just shits.

From experience I can say that 'trusted' vets can get lax in their diagnosis and make mistakes.

Besides UTI and kidney stones, there's also prostate issues for male dogs (and probably female issues for female dogs). Steriods will also make dogs pee without control on their part.

I think it's important to find the right vet who will perform the right test to get to the correct answer.

Lots of luck

sueisallaboutquilts 10-19-2011 07:28 PM

Kim, you and that bus driver are the most wonderful people!
Stories of neglect/abuse break my heart. That poor little pooch :(
I hope you find a solution though. It is frustrating for sure.
Keep us posted- you are a woman with a huge heart and I'm hoping for the end of your problem soon!
HUGS, Sue

dogpursemaker 10-19-2011 07:57 PM

Is he urinating to void, or marking? Something subtle may have changed in his relationship with his brother, and he's now letting all know!
Leg lifting is one reason I always neuter my pet boys while they're still squatting. :)

Mandie 10-19-2011 08:24 PM

My little dog only wets or poops on the floor when the weather changes. She really hates to get her feet wet or cold. Sometimes I have to pick her up and take her outside and wait for her to go. Other times she will go out but does her business on our deck. I figure I can just hose it off better there than on my hardwood floors.

Not trying to flame here but why in the world would you stick his nose in it? Please, you need to educate yourself on modern dog psychology.

To original poster: after vet check, please try crate training. It really is the best way. I hope you can solve this problem and thanks for taking in the little guy.

that is the one i have for my JRT..the happy jack .

After everything was ruled out..we feel it is a Jealousy issue with the other dog, who we got a few years ago and the new grandson, who is now 15 months old.
i had to start shutting doors, and using a flannel backed table cloth from the $ store. on my bed. the "diaper" worked the best.

there is someone on this board who is a foster to animals and a trainer. She helped me tremendously through emails..unfortunately i can't remember her board name..

keep anything off the floor, you don't want to get peed on. like shopping bags etc...

and then, ignore the people who tell you to get rid of the dog. they just don't understand.

BabyCakes 10-20-2011 04:12 AM

Call the dog whisper.I believe he is in CA also.

I went to the above address and there was a warning to CLOSE IMMEDIATELY - that there was a security issue.

My Jack has had the peeing problem before and after being neutered. He gets excited, he pees, if he is bored, he pees. Also, we have gone thru all kinds of leashes and harnesses, and somehow (the little contortionist (sp) chews them up. Sweet little devil is a poodle. We bought a $17 harness last week, and came home to find it completely destroyed. I will look into the belly pads. I was trying to figure how to attach a maxi-pad to him - but I KNOW he would chew it off in seconds! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I "inherited" my Dad's shitzu 2 1/2 yrs ago when my Dad passed away while living with us after Mom died. He is the same way. He's almost 10 now so there's no changing him. I too made belly bands and use cheap pads.

Not sure if any one mention this one but small dogs have small bladders. They are like babies and need to go out to pee about every two hours. They should go out also after eating and after playing and after napping.

Sounds like he needs re-training as suggested before. I would crate him, tether him or gate him and try a belly band. You could make one with some scraps.

Tudey 10-20-2011 06:11 AM

Take him to the vet, he might be developing bladder stones.

I have a new member of our family - a 3--year old doxie who's pretty good about going outside. However, he has had a few accidents and have considered making him a belly band. I looked at the ones at PetSmart and they're $17 for small breeds.

Looks like they use the same micro-absorbent materials used in diapers then you just wash them. I'm not crazy about the idea of having the buy several of these then having to always be washing them.

The rescue group I got him from suggested making one that has a soft pocket where I can slip in a kotex pad then simply throw that away.

My question on the ones I saw on artfire sites -- if these are made from flannel / cotton, what absorbs the urine?

I even thought of buying premie diapers and cut them up and put inside the homemade version - these would be more absorbent.

Thanks for any info on this subject since I'm a bit frustrated with this little guy. Other than this one issue, he's a perfect dog so I'm not giving up on him.

Sometimes if they have that problem, a dental cleaning could help, ask your vet though. I crate trained my dogs, and if they peed, they would get corrected , if they got a light tap with the fly swatter , shamed and got to where sometimes one would pee in the garage, so put a fly swatter on the cleaned spot........no problems now. We have doggie doors. so they can go out whenever. Hope your little ones do better, Love really helps!
