help needed for cleaning my black kitchen range

I have this black kitchen range and it is so hard to clean. No matter how hard I work on it. It just doesn't look clean. Water spots just don't come off and get grease on it that's even worse. I have tried soft scrub, even tooth paste, dawn dish soap and hot water, window cleaner, rubbing alcohol and many other things but nothing I have tried really works. If you own a black kitchen range can you please tell me what works for you?

SHELTIE'SMAMA 06-22-2015 05:06 AM

I use Windex multi surface antibacterial.

NJ Quilter 06-22-2015 05:47 AM

The trick with my MIL's was, after cleaning, make sure you dry with a paper towel.

romanojg 06-22-2015 05:50 AM

I have a black gas range and I use oven cleaner on it to get the tuff stuff, have for years. It still looks like new. I also have used old wine or vinegar to get tuff stuff out of pots n pans, it works best on a hot surface. good luck

Chester the bunny 06-22-2015 06:27 AM

Like NJ Quilter said. You have to have a wet cloth in one hand and a dry one on the other, otherwise it is just a streakfest. I use a wet dishcloth with dish soap and wash the top, rinse a few times and then the last pass has a dry cloth right behind.

Funny, I just cleaned mine today! I use Zep. Spray it on, leave it for a minute, wipe it off with a paper towel, then buff the stovetop with a soft cloth. That's all I do. It takes the grease right off.

The only place I've ever found it is Lowe's. This stuff rocks. I use it on the stove, the burners and the grates.

Those burners had quite a bit of grease on them. It's allllll gone!

My brother had a condo with the same kind of stove and he had problems keeping it clean.

dflynn 06-22-2015 05:49 PM

I use GREASED LIGHTNING. I seen it at Lowe's and Home Depot. I buy it at BJ's. Need to wipe dry.

Great info! Have to try some of these suggestions. I have trouble with mine also!!

Material Witness 06-22-2015 06:53 PM

WD 40. More like a polish.

I don't think it's a good idea to use WD40 in the house because of the chemicals in it (especially exposed to heat). In any case, I cant stand the smell. DH used it on a squeaky metal porch chair and the odor bothered me for months even though the chair was virtually outside all the time. I have forbidden him to ever use it inside the house. I'd have to move out! ;)

I too have a black stove and I always use a microfiber cleaning cloth on it. That seems to get the dirt off and leave it sparkling clean with no spots. I rarely ever use any cleaning products, and my stove really gets dirty. Love those microfibers.

MaggieLou 06-23-2015 05:31 AM

I used to have black glass top range and I always used an SOS pad to clean it. Worked great.

nwm50 06-23-2015 05:41 AM

Wd40?????? Won't that make a gas stove blow up??

Yooper32 06-23-2015 06:04 AM

My DD was visiting last week and I was just telling her that I am pretty sure a person must be nuts to buy black appliances. My stove is also driving me bananas. It isn't worth the grief you go through trying to keep it from looking like a smeared mess.

marshaKay 06-23-2015 06:52 AM

WD40 is GREAT! The main ingredient is fish oil. Works like a polish on all kinds of stuff. Best for glass top stoves, stainless fridge fronts, dishwasher fronts, oven doors. Microwave doors. Not just for squeaky things. Best to spray on your bait too. Guaranteed to catch you a fish. Google all the uses, you WILL be astonished.
.Black appliances have met their match.

Not sure which is worse, black topped stoves or stainless (not) steel appliances!! Why, oh why, didn't I keep my old fashioned white ones??????

Stitchit123 06-23-2015 07:59 AM

I have tried all of these suggestions with the exception of the WD 40 I can't stand the way it smells either. It looks beautiful and then I blink - it's weird. Its like wearing a pair of black slacks and owning a white Angora cat. It came with the rental of this house. But when its my choice it will be a nice white stove. I have learned to ignore it now that I've seen -make that heard -my brother cleaning his stainless steel kitchen. Personally I like nice white stoves and fridge's..

There is a product called Oven and Grill GooGone that is the best thing I have ever found. I get mine at the local True Value Hardware. I spray it on and kind of smear it around all over. Let it sit while I finish up everything else in the kitchen, then take a clean wash wet wash cloth and just wipe it down. It is absolutely effortless. For the other little spots and waterspots I just wipe with the Clorox wet wipes and its done. Kitchen takes no time anymore and I love it

Just to set the record straight on WD40, I found this snopes page:
http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/household/wd-40.asp

According to the MSDS for WD40, there is no fish oil in the product. Ingredients are primarily petroleum-based (which to me means you do not want to be inhaling them over long periods of time):

I agree, and i feel the same about stainless steel...TOO much trouble. I always keep my house clean, but I want to do it quickly, not spend time polishing. I love white!!!

I found soft scrub advanced surface worked great on my black stove.

callen 06-23-2015 05:51 PM

I use Mr. Clean Magic Erasers on my stove top. It is black & once I scrub it with the erasers, I rinse it with a clean, wet with hot water dish cloth & then I wipe it dry with a dry, soft towel. Takes just about anything off.

ctrysass2012 06-23-2015 09:02 PM

1 of my clients has stainless frig, stove, D/W  I found a product online called Cerama-brite for stainless. It wipes on & 2nd dry cloth wipes off. Only thing I found that works good & fast.

grandmahoney 06-24-2015 03:03 AM

Thank you everyone for all the good information. I have made a list and I can't wait to try them.

CGail 06-24-2015 04:36 AM

After cleaning the actual grease off with soapy wet rag and then Rinsing, I use Weiman stove top cleaner/polish. I also use weiman stainless steel cleaner/polish. Both work great to clean and polish - looks like new. I get the products at Walmart.

I moved this year and left behind my black gas stove (thank goodness!!) I would NEVER ever buy another black stove. Now I have a black ceramic electric stove top and they recommend the Cerama-Brite. I ordered some from Amazon and it does a great job on the stainless, too.

I used microfibre on the gas stove and got it streak free but was never able to get a couple of burnt on places cleaned up. Fortunately, the stove was pretty new and a guy bought my condo so he probably didn't even notice the crusty spots. :D :D

Now, about black ceramic sinks. I had one of those, too, thinking I'd be free of the so-called stainless sink but it didn't work out all that well. The sink got really dull looking and the only way I found to restore the shine was to use oil on it. A real nuisance and I had to be careful not to get a build up of the oil. I don't recommend the black sink option.

Nell Dwyer 06-24-2015 07:57 AM

I use the dry powder cleaner on my black stove-it is call the Bar Keepers Friend-in a canister looks like Comet cleaner-works like a pro and soap and water clean up with paper toweling-takes off all spills and I use it on a scouring sponge

tessagin 06-24-2015 08:09 AM

I totally agree. My stove is white gas with the black trays. takes me all of 5 minutes to clean. I just stick the trays into the sink with Dawn and while that's going on, I wipe up the rest of the stove with the microfiber cloths and sweep the floor then finish cleaning the trays and grates put back done. I love the microfiber cloths for dishes. Won't use anything else. If you do it right after using or even at the last meal, you won't have to spend all that extra hard effort to clean it. Clean as you go. Not taking that 5 minutes just creates a build up.

I use straight white vinegar or orange oil they do great for me.

jothesewer2 06-24-2015 01:04 PM

The directions for my black glass top Whirlpool range says not to use windex as the glass is porus. I use soda and vinegar. Works great. Rinse and dry with micro fiber cloth.

MarleneC 06-25-2015 08:21 AM

I have a black range along with other kitchen appliances and I find like you that it is hard to get clean and look shiny. When the sun shines in the window I see dust on it. Thanks for asking how to deal with it. Am reading through responses.

showmequilter 06-28-2015 03:54 PM

I hate my Black stove.. just saying..It sure wasn't my idea to get it.. But i still have to clean the darn thing.. I use Vinegar on it and always dry it off with a soft towel or rag to get the streaks off of it... If I had to do over I will stay with white from now on.....

.Black appliances have met their match..

google helped me decide to use it on my stainless steel appliances. Just a tiny bit on cloth, don't spray on the appliance, and it has worked great on everything but the freezer of my frig. It is greatly improved though. I have about 6 different stainless steel cleaners here and none work. WD40 worked the best and I'm guessing it will work on black appliances too. As far as the smell, I am not sensitive to it, have no chemical sensitivities and once it is on the cloth, for me, the odor dissipates very quickly. No one here knows I use it because they can't smell it.

It is so interesting that some products work for some of us and some don't. After reading on here how great that Awesome spray worked I got some and it didn't work on anything I tried it on here! Gave it a few tries here and there and then threw it out.

Oh, and WD40 takes grease stains out of clothes! Who knew. It worked for me.

I love the smell of WD-40 in the morning. :)

I use the stuff all the time, it works great on getting the nasty gunk off machinery.

mjhaess 06-30-2015 05:31 PM

I used Lysol cleaner. I put it in a spray bottle and always used it to clean my black stove. It made it shine..
