I have pink eye! Or the more fun way to put it... Conjunctivitus.
Are there any home remedies that I can use till I can get to the doctor on Tuesday? Thanks! |
Not that I know of. I have had this a few times in my life and I could not wait until Tues. Do not touch anything, as it is VERY contageous. I have to have ointment, or I would probably scratch my eye out. A warm cloth might help. Good luck pretty lady!
Ouch! I think you have to see the Dr. to get ready of it!
Take a wash cloth, put under very hot running water, get very wet, ring out, fold in quarters---lay tightly on eye for about 20 minutes or untill cloth gets cold.
Should provide some relief, just do not re-use same cloth before washing. |
It's actually a staph infection and you need an antibiotic ointment. If the walk-in clinics aren't open today, use the warm soaks today to keep you from scratching. Don't put your contacts in either eye. See a doc tomorrow. It is real contagious and easy to spread to your other eye. Take care and let us know how it goes.

I won't have money till tues. so I have to wait till then. I found on line that I could use chammomile tea bags to help... so I'm going to try that for now... just t oget through till tues. I'd have to go to the doctor anyways so that I can get something for this cough!

Google Home Remedies for Pink Eye and you will find a lot. Some examples were: Wash eyes with eyebright from a health food store, moistened chamomile tea bag placed on eyes, Treat pink eye with pulsatilla tablets, Cotton balls soaked in boiled saltwater when placed on the eyelids kill the infection, warm(tepid) milk as eyewash or compress, potato grated and placed on eyes for 20 minutes(3 times a day), soak a cloth with aloe vera juice and place on eyes, etc... I have never had it, but this was interesting for the future.
In any other instance I would agree with home remedies but not with your eyes!! Please just use warm soaks until Tuesday and keep from infecting the other eye. I'm sure all those things mentioned have helped in the past but would you want those things in your healthy eyes? If there's and infection I'm just afraid of you damaging your sight.
I work for a doc who is big in the holistic and old time remedies--we use lots of them but never in the eyes. |
Can you call you doctor and tell him/her your symptoms? Maybe he will call in a perscription for you.
never thought of that thanks!
A wet tea bag-any brand- will help relive some of the itch. Wash your hand everytime you touch or get near the eyes. Paper towel can be used inplace of wash cloth then trash towel.
You def. need to see a Dr as soon as you can. Milk is soothing to the eye but will not help the infection. Salt water will kill germs & some bacteria but burns like the devil. Warm Salt Water compresses to the eye may help. As everyone else has said, you have to be extremely cautious about not infecting your other eye. Samilisan or something like, that makes an OTC eyedrop for Pink Eye. I battle eye allergies that often goes into an infection every year & it is so not fun! Just the pits. I feel for you! HUGE HUGS

It just sucks that I have to wait till tues.
My mom said that my eye looks like the babies did when the baby had it, so she thinks it's pretty mild. All the doctor told them to do for the baby was warm compresses since it was so mild and it was gone with in a few days. I don't have as much gunk coming out of the eye like I did yesterday. |
There are home remedies that work. Otherwise, how did all of us live before there was such a thing as money to go to the dr or health insurance?
We were poor. There were 7 kids in the family. We didn't have any money to go to a dr unless there was evidence of a broken bone. Mama always tended to us at the house. If I recall correctly, she just put a warm cloth on our eye & sternly told us not to touch it. And it itched like the dickens. But it soon went away if we minded Mama & didn't fool with it. Good luck. (I understand about not having money to go to dr) |
I have used the OTC Samilisan drops and they definately do help until you can get antibiotics from a dr
You have already gotten all the advise you need, so I will just sayI am sorry you have an additiond problem with the cold! Sometimes when it rains it pours!! :-(

It doesn't itch anymore... not like yesterday! So i'm happy about that... theres not as much gunk.... so thats good... I'm still going to the doctor on tuesday though. |
I had the same thing last week. I used epsom salts in warm water as a compress. Don't touch your other eye...and use a clean cloth each time you use the compress.
Do not use anything not prescribed on your eyes. If you are spending money on home remedies, save it and go to the doctor. Epsom Salts, magnesium sulfate heptahydrate to us geeks, has a lot of uses but this is not a good one. The stuff you find in the store is not necessarily "pure". If you are really looking for something over the counter, talk to a pharmacist. They will be happy to answer any question they legally can.
I know a lot of people are really into the home remedy thing. That's OK except that you have a really contageous infection, you live with a small child and are around other people. Everything that comes in contact with an open oriface (eyes are an open window for germs) should be sterile. Those compresses when you are finished would need to be boiled (sterilized) to kill the bacteria. Just washing in hot water and chlorox is not enough. The fact that you have multiple infections is a good indicator of overall systemic health. You might be needing to evaluate your diet, find a "good" vitamin, etc. My kids tend to get more infections as they get higher on the stress train. I know college starts soon. You definitely don't want to be wimpy in the beginning. I hope you feel better soon. |
Let us know how it goes.
Exactly! again the eye is not bothering me now... it doesn't look discolored. My mom said that it might be pink eye, hence the concern and trip to doctor atop of that... I'm supposed to meet my room mate on saturday, so I'm hoping I'm A OK.
I'm sure I will be as soon as I'm on some meds. I just feel like my health went into systematic melt down. Everyone else in the house caught the same cold, and none are bad. Yet I'm the one who gets everything at once... I just hope I can sleep tonight. |
I feel for you. I have insurance but cannot afford the co-pay and it stinks. I think if you soak a compress in a mixture of 1 tsp of salt and two cups of water as hot as you can stand, you may feel some relief.
I don't think it was pink eye if it got better that fast. I think you may have had what my family calls, "a cold in the eye" especially since you said everyone in the house was passing a cold around. It's kind of like a contagious allergy. Pink eye lasts longer and is quite painful. A dishcloth or paper towel soaked in salt water isn't going to hurt no matter what you have. Neither will an ice pack as long as you don't leave it on for more than 10 minutes at a time and re-wrap with a clean cloth between applications.
That makes sense too...
Feel better. The warm compresses are the best until you see the Dr.
I had pink eye last month, it really stinks, I washed my eye with baby shampoo, it didn't sting and if you call the Dr. they usually have someone on call if you can decribe your symptoms they can call you in a script, what ever you do don't use contacts (if you wear them) leave them out for a week and throw infected ones out and get a new case. If you have little people in the house teach them to use hand sanitizer after bathroom use, they often can't reach to wash their hands, even if you have to do the wipe job sometime their wondering hands can be the culpret of pink eye. I sure hope you feel better, Coralee
I don't use contacts. I have them, I just don't use them... not fond of things in the eye or rather sticking fingers in eys.
Hope you are feeling better. I have had pink eye and no insurance but I did work in an herb shop. I used colloidal silver in my eye and it went away in a few days. I only see a doctor when I absolutely HaVe too. Even though I have Medicare now. Even the copays are beyond my budget. Any colds or flu or anything that does not require surgery is taken care of at home. I rarely take antibiotics. Haven't in years. I do keep my immune system up with vitamins and garlic. I also keep my blood pressure down with naturals. Best of luck in school this year. My DGD is going back soon too. She gets sent to school with all kinds of things for immune system and stress. LOL
I do a lot of "home remedy's" but NOTHING for this, go to Dr!

SO, I hope to get into the doctor today... my other eye has goop... but it's not pink eye...
I'm hoping that what ever I get from the doctor will allow me to breath while I sleep... I'm so tired! nearly almost 4 nights with little sleep... I cant keep this up anymore! |
Thinking of you & hoping you get in to see the Dr. today. You need some relief from this, so you can get built back up. Ask the Dr what you can take to help increase your immune system. Especially with School starting soon!
call the pharmacy...there is an otc medication our dr recommended to my husband... but he is out of town (with the bottle) and i don't remember the name...hope you feel better!

Are there any home remedies that I can use till I can get to the doctor on Tuesday? Thanks! Cotton ball or Cotton Swab Dip the cotton ball into the tea, (not dripping wet, Just wet enough to wet the cotton ball) Apply to you eye. keep repeating this for about 10 to 15 minutes 4 or 5 times a day. The tea must be as hot as you can stand it. you can use the same cup of tea during the day, just reheat it each time. This really works and in 2 or 3 days it will be gone. |
There is an over the counter eye drop that is in a pink box and also called PINK EYE. Rather expensive but it works!
I hope you went to the doctor today and start mending soon.
I am so sorry you have pink eye. I developed a big fat cold sore in the night :-(
It turns out not pink eye. Just a very bad sinus infection.
