Summer has decided to hit us with an unfathomable punch of heat. Yesterday was in the low 80's and today it was 88 degrees but with humidity (I hate that about Chicago) it felt like 92 degrees and higher. My cousin put in the air conditioner at about 2 pm today and it is just now starting to cool down in the apartment... it is now 12 am. My tummy is bothering me and I think it has to do with the temp of the apartment all day. Ah well! I'm thinking of going to bed soon and waking up when my mom does so that I can walk to the mail box and drop off some packages, and then drop off some books to the library that will be due... then I'll travel back home to bask in the air conditioning...

It was so warm in the house that the computer kept over heating... so I'm lucky to be able to post this tonight!

Prism99 05-23-2010 09:21 PM

It was like that in WI too, but my dh still spent 6 hours outside digging holes and planting three trees. Don't know how he does it! Especially since he hates heat and humidity; he likes it cold.

Alu_Rathbone 05-23-2010 09:26 PM

haha, I like it between 40-75 degrees!

I have to move all my sewing into the living room tomorrow, so that I can get pot holders done... OR I can at least do cutting tomorrow... then maybe do sewing on tuesday, since by then I'll be able to leave the kitchen door open... the kitchen is a huge mess, cause all my sisters stuff is in there since we were putting carpet down in her room...

CarrieAnne 05-24-2010 02:59 AM

LOL, I think Summers here! I'm in Wi too, and it went right from chilly nights to 90 plus degrees! At least the tomato plants are gonna love the weather, got to finish my garden today in the heat.

Rainy Day 05-24-2010 03:25 AM

Guess you're in the Chicago area but your location on the left says "E.P."
:?:

Enjoy the heat. Here in Utah we're getting snow!

Quilter7x 05-24-2010 08:01 AM

SNOW!!! I didn't think any part of the US would be getting any more snow since it's almost June. Is that normal for your area of the country?

Alu, I hope you get some pot holders done. Be sure to show us pictures. :)

My air conditioner just died, so I am without this coming Summer season. Looking at swamp coolers, high power floor fans etc to keep my home cool when it gets hot starting next month.
Suggestion on the computer overheating, try this: remove the cover and put a small fan aimed at the mother board - the internal fans are not enough to cool down the unit when it is hot in the room. Had this problem in Calif, used the fan and it kept the computer cool and working properly - no more memory popping out due to the heat.

vjengels 05-24-2010 08:04 AM

Yeah, that humidity is a bear! We like it hot and dry! DH & I are headed to Vegas then Death Valley in a couple weeks. I can hardly wait!... Road Trip!!!!!!!!!

thequilteddove 05-24-2010 08:07 AM

I love it! Not sure what the temp was yesterday or this morn'n but I've already jumped in the pool!

When it comes to gardening the rule here is that it's safe to plant after Mother's Day. We don't usually get snow this late but it's been known to happen. Usually we see the last of it in April and it's just a light snowfall with those tiny little flakes. Today as I drove to work there were big fluffy feather-like flakes coming down. Hope my garden survives.

Chicago is an easier location to point out... plus my sub burb is right over the border of Chicago. I could have just put Little Italy haha.

So day two... it is 88 degrees out side... and in side it is 85 degrees... I think it is time for my mom to get a new air conditioner! She doesn't think so... and I wanted to say, but I don't want to bear with a psycho woman every day... but I thought better of it... at least my sisters bedroom is cool... they have a small air conditioner in their room... we tried that one in here last year, it didn't do very well.

I'm in central Illinois by Eastern College and it is 90 something (originally from Northwest suburbs) and I know how Illinois goes form hot to cold, cold to hot without any notice. It does work on the body. Hope u feel better

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 05-24-2010 11:10 AM

It's 27 degrees here (80 farenheit) but it feels like 33 with the humidex (92 farenheit)
I have two air conditioning units in the basement, but we had new windows installed two weeks ago, so the plexi-glass we used last year won't fit this year...

They're calling for 32 tomorrow (91 farenheit) 36 with humidex (97 farenheit) I think maybe I'll just hit the mall and walk around there all day.

granniebj 05-24-2010 11:40 AM

Its humid and almost 90 here! But I'm loving it!

amma 05-24-2010 12:18 PM

You might want to take the back off of your computer tower and see if there is dust collecting...that will also make your computer run hotter. Unplug the computer first, and take the vacuum hose with the brush attachment and gently vacuum the dust away.

ann clare 05-24-2010 01:57 PM

It was 28 degrees here yesterfay. Beautiful. Not so warm today.

Swamp coolers don't work well when the humidity goes over about 35%. They are wonderful in the high desert though. I loved the one we had in our house in western CO, way cheaper to run than an ac, but I don't think it would help cool off a house in high humidity. Good luck staying cool.

It might need to be cleaned and/or might need replacement coolant (freeon). If you Google how to fix room air conditioners, you will find several websites that explain what to do. (Coolant replacement requires a technician, but cleaning you can do yourself.)

Prism99 05-24-2010 03:07 PM

I remember my mother cooling the living room by placing a big block of ice in a pan in front of a window fan. Of course, in those days the ice trucks made the rounds of the neighborhood every day! Just had to run out and flag it down to buy a big block of ice.

Luv Quilts and Cats 05-24-2010 03:07 PM

It's going to be in the 90's tomorrow here in NH. I really don't like hot weather, or humidity. I like the Fall the best. In the summer, I bask in the a/c!

Chasing Hawk 05-24-2010 03:09 PM

Here in Central Oregon, winter still has here cold icy grip on things. Snow peas and rain and a nice cold breeze to boot.

Tink's Mom 05-24-2010 03:24 PM

I stopped by Sam's Club this morning...and the airconditioners were leaving quickly...90degrees today...
Tell your Mom the new ones are cheaper to run...

mygirl66 05-24-2010 03:39 PM

I gave away 2 air conditioners when I moved, they were only 3 years old. I had a hard time giving them away, everyone has central air!

Im in Woodstock. My sewing room is in the peak of the house. It was stifling in there. You would have to quilt naked to be able to breathe! I cranked the entire house AC down to 68 to get my room 80. I put up with this all last year, As soon as this heat breaks I am calling the AC guy to see what can be done.

QuiltMania 05-24-2010 04:07 PM

It's about 85 here today. Sadly the central air broke at the end of last summer and we don't have the thousands of dollars the guy wants to fix it right now. On the up side, my brother will be coming home from Germany where SIL is stationed in July. He knows how to do heating/air conditioning and my take pity and fix it for me cheap. So for now, I'll be investing in some fans.

littlehud 05-24-2010 05:02 PM

It is so warm and humid here. The night before last it was almost 90 in my room. I don't have a vent in there and it's on the second floor. I made my son open his bedroom door ( he has a vent and a cool room ) I used fans to direct some of the cool to my room and it's a bit better now. About 79. That works for me.

seamstome 05-24-2010 05:03 PM

You are not going to believe this one.

Hubby walks up into my sewing room and says holy crap it's hot in here. Like I didnt notice the 100 degree heat in the room which is 14 by 10 with three fans in it. Really I said, I hadnt noticed.

Then I got a new kitchen cart today. Came in three boxes. It was 90 degrees out today and my hubby is downstairs burning the boxes in the fireplace!!!

One of us is crazy. Im pretty sure it's not me.

PALS65 05-24-2010 05:46 PM

93 here in Wisconsin!

fun2quilt 05-24-2010 05:49 PM

We spent last night in the basement bedroom. Waaaaay cooler than upstairs. Tonight I have the a/c running :)

Thats what I told my mom yesterday! lol This air conditioner is about 4 years old? I think it needs a coolant replacement... We do have another air conditioner that we are going to try... and see if that works... will do that tomorrow...

Alu_Rathbone 05-24-2010 07:07 PM

I've noticed that when I eat I get sick... and I think it's due to the temp... Tomorrow will be strictly water and light fare...

Oh I agree. It will be 93 here today. My family calls me the human sprinkler. In the winter I am almost normal. Today I will be a puddle.

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 05-25-2010 08:02 AM

I HATE A/C, it's always too cold!
I freeze my butt off all winter in Montreal, and in the summer I have to pay extra to freeze my butt off?
We installed the air conditionners yesterday (it was nearly 100 degrees f. with the humidex) and Sasha had it blasting. I kid you not, I had fuzzy socks, jogging pants, a sweater, and my chenille housecoat on top to be warm.
I'll use the a/c on low when it's really disgustingly hot or muggy, or I'll turn it on and leave the house and switch it off when I come home to a cooled house.
I usually remote start my car a few minutes ahead to cool it off, and then turn off the a/c when I get in. The cold makes me sick.

Must be like Sasha. He sweats if you just look at him! I think that's why he likes the a/c up so high, noone wants to be sweaty and uncomfortable.

On the other hand, I have to freeze my butt off so he can be comfortable... there's no middle ground with him.

Lyn 05-25-2010 08:47 AM

I hate ac also. I get a summer cold or allergies not sure what. I am at an age where I like my comfort. :-D

Alu_Rathbone 05-25-2010 01:43 PM

Today isn't so bad, it's under 80 in the house... and around 90 out side... although out side it feels like 95... ugh...

BrendaB 05-25-2010 03:30 PM

You all have my sympathy. I don't do well in the heat and humidity either. I'm with Marsey - I love winter. The only thing I like about warmer weather is the fresh veggies. Snow in Utah in May?! Wow. I hope your gardens survive too. Hope everyone else gets a break from the heat soon. :-)
