I had a pair of mittens that were so warm that had this happen. I found some yarn that was the same color and weight and darned it. I doesn't look like new but if you did this and then covered with a pretty decoration that might work. You do need to catch the other threads or it will continue to unravel. Although the fray stop might to the trick there.
