How I briefly lost 100 IQ points.

I was flipping through channels on the TV in my sewing room. And stopped at MTV and Snookie & JJWOW was on.
25 point drop there..........

then one of the girls asked if Mexico had its own moon.
another 25 point drop there....

They were eating outdoors at an Italian restaurant (while in Mexico). A show with guys twirling batons that were on fire was the evening entertainment. I can only assume the girl who said this was the genius of the group....she said..."I wonder if you can get a tan from twirling those things?......

A 50 point drop there.......

I had about 35 points left, so I quickly changed the channel and shut the TV off.

I think I will listen to music from now on..........LOL

burchquilts 09-07-2012 02:15 PM

My DH & I were just talking about this the other day. Remember when you actually had to have some kind of talent to be famous? Now you can be famous for being dumb as a box of rocks! And just think... Snooki has a baby now! It's enought o keep you awake at night! Scurry over to the Science Channel & hope you can make up the I. Q. purge... LOL!

Grandma Bonnie 09-07-2012 02:26 PM

I never watch any of those shows but have seen some of the people on the morning talk shows and that shows me enough to know I will NEVER watch their shows! Too bad they can make so much money being so stupid!

nativetexan 09-07-2012 03:50 PM

Luckily, i hardly know who those people are!!!

EllieGirl 09-07-2012 04:31 PM

I have never watched the show. The little bit that I've seen on the Today show I wonder why the media is even giving these people attention. I was thrilled to hear the show was canceled. Between that and the Kardashians I question the common sense of media.

mrodarme 09-07-2012 04:59 PM

has anyone noticed on the talk/news shows these people are now starting to talk as they text...the dont make complete sentences and they talk so fast !!!...sometimes on the phone with tech support or whatever i have to tell them to slow down...is my brain not processing fast enough or is this the new trend?...i have wanting to send the 'viewer's voice' of our local news show a thread & ask their casters to just read the news dont act it...they are always talking over each other like its a social event at starbucks and not the news....ugh!!!..thats why i have satellite radio....monica in texas

nativetexan 09-07-2012 05:09 PM

I'm still trying to figure out where the non-democratic convention is since all i see on t.v. is about the Democratic convention. I thought everyone was Democratic in this Nation. OK, i know they mean Democrats! it just drives me nuts! even Republicans are Democratic!
i guess i'll go back to t.v. now.................

Chasing Hawk 09-07-2012 05:34 PM

I think I have fully recovered. I went and bought me an ice cream. :)

I usually don't watch that type of show. But as they say curiosity lower the cat's IQ. Anyways, I prefer old B/W gangster movies, anything with Tommy Lee Jones or Sam Elliot and Fox News.
We make time to watch Sons of Anarchy, I can't wait until Tuesday evening. I am going to have to order the first two seasons of Boardwalk Empire. I missed most of last season.

I am going to work on a laptop bag this weekend, since our new one arrived today.

LynnVT 09-07-2012 05:59 PM

Has anyone seen "Honey-Boo-Boo" on TLC? It used to mean "The Learning Channel" but these days it's more like the loser's channel, and I don't mean the good kind of loosing, like losing weight!

Nanamoms 09-07-2012 06:10 PM

I don't even watch the BIG 3 channels. Nothing there to see (JMHO). I love my Criminal Minds, NCIS and Storage Wars over on A&E and USA. I will also watch certain shows on TLC and TNT. Today, A&E had a Criminal Minds marathon and I only did things during commercials!!! LOL

Jingle 09-07-2012 06:41 PM

I don't know any of those names. If I watch TV it is only HGTV and DIY, I love to see them fix up houses, etc. I listen to a good movie if there is one on while I type on computer. I watch TV only when I can't sleep. During the day we only listen to talk radio, I can't tune most of it out.

this pretty much sums it up for me. too.

ptquilts 09-08-2012 04:01 AM

Once in a while there will be a rerun of an old show from the 1950's, like Twilight Zone, and it amazes me that TV has come down so low. I mean in the 50's they had Acting, production values, just like a movie. Now it seems like it is a bunch of idiots with a camera pointed at them.

Thank goodness here in VT all we get is PBS. And, we watch better shows here than we do in the winter when we are at a place that has 50+ channels. Need to Know, PBS Newshour, Bill Moyers, Independent Lens.....

QuiltingNancy 09-08-2012 06:50 AM

I did the same thing, I watched that show on TLC, something about "Honey, Boo, Boo." I am still traumatized. That are so many great old TV shows and movies; I just wonder who watches this stuff?

Normabeth 09-08-2012 07:30 AM

Well said, those shows are an insult to our intelligence

willferg 09-08-2012 07:50 AM

Regarding "Jersey Shore," I have to tell myself that they are faking it, they aren't really that dumb...after all they are laughing all the way to the bank.

Still, it's a shame to see people finding success by becoming the lowest common denominator.

mrodarme 09-08-2012 07:50 AM

honey boo boo...thats been the talk on the local morning shows here...i wind up leaving the room...what the $$&* is a honey boo boo....i always see a little girl when the speak of this...is that her name?...does she have a tv show or somthing...i took the tv out of my sewing room to make more cutting room and a place for my satellite radio boom box....glad i did...i dont think im missing much...honey boo boo?!?!?...geez....

crafty pat 09-08-2012 08:07 AM

For the life of me I can not understand why people like to watch all that trash. We are very careful what we watch and my kids are careful what they let our grand kids watch. I really hate the shows that have smart mouth kids that think it is cute to talk back to adults and their parents.

joyce j 09-08-2012 08:21 AM

Tv really stinks. dont care for much of what they have on. And when ypu find something you like they take it off ,for some junk. joyce j

linkd 09-08-2012 08:26 AM

yeah, I was watching the news last night and there was a commercial from AT&T about how you could tape four programs at the same time. I have a hard enough time finding ONE that I want to see and we have a lot of channels. Personal preference is for shows that are written not edited and no reality shows (I do make an exception for HGTV - at least some of the stuff). If Snookie is as dumb as she seems (unless she is just playing it and it is being edited to enhance that image) she shouldn't be allowed to reproduce at least not with a TV camera around.

Stitchit123 09-08-2012 08:45 AM

I had over 70 channels -the break down was 15 pd commercials/shopping--13 Reality crap--5 Religion --7 Sports.=40 channels of nothing.I had cable cut back to 25 channels.I'm afraid our generation are the last to appreciate TV with story lines -plots and intelligent writers So I watch old re-runs over and over again.

ptquilts 09-08-2012 09:27 AM

It is sad that what used to be good channels, like History, TLC, and Discovery, have all jumped on the "reality" bandwagon.

This is so true, everything is a reality show these days. No wonder my brother watches TVland or whatever channel that is that shows reruns of Andy Griffith and MASH.

We have 250 channels on DISH. On the 25th we finally get cable to our house......yippie!!
A few less channels and better internet. And to top that off we will be saving $$$

Satillite = $105.00 (more if we order pay perview)
DSL = $49.00

our bill will go down to :
Cable + Internet = $89.00 (for the first 6 months then it's 108.00)

crtwelvecats 09-08-2012 12:18 PM

I'd say your recovered. after all you took the quick cure, coming back on line to us here. LOL. welcome back.

MimiBug123 09-08-2012 07:33 PM

I can see why Snooki would lower your IQ, but Honey Boo Boo will make you IQless. I told hubby this morning that it's a waste of money to pay for satellite. On the rare occasion that I do watch tv, there's nothing but garbage on it. How sad.

Peckish 09-08-2012 07:52 PM

My husband thinks the shows like honey boo boo, swamp loggers, etc are the media's attempt at making people in "fly-over country" appear really stupid to the rest of the country. And the rest of the world, too, I guess, because they're watching also! It makes me mad because the idiots on those reality shows are NOT representative of the general population.

MisDixie 09-08-2012 08:22 PM

TV... the more you watch these days, the more your brain is likely to melt into a gray goo and drain out your ears! We have a reality show done right here in Hay River and Yellowknife. Its been around for a few years and has run its course, IMHO. It was a bit much to see "Mikey's Hot Sauce" done up and for sale at the grocery store. "Mikey" is best know for drinking and passing out on film. Enough said.
I need to say the dumming down of all of us by TV and this new reality show stuff, around the world is sad. Thankfully, here in Canada we have the CBC and some of its programs are usually good. I do enjoy PBS, and other things like the National Geographic and history.
Otherwise it the oldies, CSI, Bones, Law and Order,
and then there is space channel, cooking shows, military channel that the DH watches. Sigh...As to that I need to say the following...Chris Rock says " Were only one CSI away from committing murder"
LMFAO, Dixie

earthwalker 09-08-2012 09:40 PM

We cut our satellite subscription a few years ago....only thing worthwhile on it was live sport. We both prefer the internet, and only watch TV for news, documentaries and the handful of programmes that are worthwhile....We both love foreign films and a lot of English crime series.

MaryAnnMc 09-09-2012 03:54 AM

I just realized this morning that the only time I turn the TV on now is for the news(we have a great local news team). Other than that, it's Netflix on the computer. But I suppose that will change when NCIS returns. Love me my Gibbs & company.

damaquilts 09-09-2012 04:28 AM

Since my brothers step daughter and her kid moved in last year, I rarely go downstairs so I rarely watch tv. I have become quite fond of Netflix however. I watch all the British mystery series they have on there.

I have always loved archeology. When I do catch a bit of these shows on tv , I always wonder what someone will think, a thousand years from now if they come across these shows. I hate to think that the people on tv and in the news today is what they think we are like. Most are either dumb as rocks or fanatics of the worst sort. I am neither. Sad to think that today Money is what is important .

Caswews 09-09-2012 05:54 AM

LOL and my family wonders why I only watch History, History 2, Discovery unless there is a sewing program on .. LOL

jbj137 09-09-2012 06:45 AM

I agree that show,
and truly many others on now
are a total waste of time.

I think Ryan Seacrest produces Jersey Shores and the Kardashian shows. If he does then I think it is understandable. In my honest opinion, he is closely related to that pair of scissors you leave in the back of the drawer because they can't even cut paper.

LOL.....Oh my, that is just too funny!

ROL --- I know what you mean!!!!

nivosum 09-09-2012 11:02 AM

I was shocked to see one of the commentators on I think it was "The Buzz" show ask people to please stop watching shows like "Honey Boo Boo" because they are dumbing us down. The man was almost pleading with the viewers. I was channel surfing when I stopped on the show since I don't watch much TV. I do like watching some of the oldies on Memorable TV (ME TV).

caspharm 09-09-2012 11:40 AM

It is amazing isn't it that the cooking channels actually seem to have more intelligent people than a lot of other channels. There are some other current shows, like Big Bang Theory that require some thinking by the audience. A lot of the older shows did require thinking.

It's amazing that so many shows actually don't have a "theme." Honestly, how can reality be a theme, since how is it reality to have a camera crew in your home all the time?

"Common sense" and "the media" should never appear in the same sentence! lol

AllAboutScraps 09-09-2012 01:26 PM

It is so refreshing to hear other people who have the same opinion of "reality" TV as I do. I know people I've always considered intelligent who watch that drivel......they tell me it is hilarious to watch what people will do for ratings......I think it is just sad that it takes that kind of trash to get people to laugh these days.

Give me a plot line and some people that can act and make a character believable....love Gibbs!
