When keeping meat in a freezer how long do you keep it?

DebraK 03-21-2010 11:57 AM

I don't know the rule of thumb, but for me, no more than 6 months.

Well, personally...no more than 6-9 months. Now, were you to ask my hubby...years. So, now, when I decide that the meat is getting old, I just take a couple packages a day out to the field and pitch it. He does not catch on. LOL Seriously, since it is just the 2 of us now and we do not use so much...I try not to have more than a qtr of a beef or half a hog in my freezer at a time. I don't think there is really any danger in eating older meat as long as it has been firmly frozen all the time, however, it would not have the same taste/quality.

Since we sold the house with thebig freezer in the basement, we only have the freezer that comes with the fridge in the apartment. Is so small we can not store anything for too long, and I am kind of liking it this way better. We used to have meats there stored forever and loose track of how old they were. Now we know what we have and since we are right in town, we shop more often.

i think it is the freezer burn that wreck the meat..not sure.
but there is just two of us now, and i only buy enough meat for 2 weeks. i have a "seal a meal" thing, so i can still buy in bulk, and break it down to the size i need it.i love the seal a meal!

I have a 20 cf deep freezer in the garage. I have pulled out meat that has been in there 2 years and it has come out great. That is, of course, if it is wrapped properly.

Has anybody noticed that foods frozen in the 'self-thawing' (or whatever it's called) freezers sometimes get a funny taste? Sometimes I wish I had the old fashioned freezer that I'd have to chip the ice out off a couple times a year. Or is it something wrong with my freezer?

I always divide meat, chicken or whatever and put in freezer bags, label and date. I make lots of roast or soup, stews so we have leftovers to eat for lunch at work.
