They must think i am stupid. I put my quilt frame up for sale on craigs list..i have sold lots of things on there, and never gotten a reply like this:

Thanks for the response. I am willing to purchase it. I will be paying
you via check. You don't need to bother yourself pertaining to the
shipment. I will arrange with my shipper to handle it for me.

The
amount on the check will include the shipper's payment as well. You
will need to cash the check, deduct your own funds and get the rest
trasfered to my shipper via Western Union so that he could come for
the pick-up at your address. I need your full name, address and your
phone number so as to mail the check to you in timely manner. The
payment will be sent almost immediately once you comply to deduct just
the amount for the item and transfer the balance to the shipper.

PS:Kindly consider the item bought. I want you to take the item off
advertisement because I don't want any other buyer to bid on it again.
I will be adding extra $20 as listing removal fee and make sure you
inform me immediately you remove the listing, OK?

Await your reply.

LOL. besides me not doing any business like this..Craigs list is not a "bidding" procedure.

So, Seller be aware of the scams out there..
i feel sorry for those that are desperate to sell something and would probably go for something like this. I did get back to her..and now "Await her reply".

ptquilts 09-26-2011 03:32 AM

If you really want to mess with their heads, say - "go ahead and send the check" - then when you get it , tell them your bank advised you to wait until it clears before sending them any money. Or tell them the bank said it was fake.

Or tell them you cashed the check and decided to keep all the money for yourself because you had unexpected bills.

I have gotten these kinds of responses on items as low as a $20 ice cream maker. Now I just usually disable email replies on a CL ad - they can call me if they are interested.

QuiltnNan 09-26-2011 03:33 AM

i definitely would not do business with this person. sounds too flaky.

ckcowl 09-26-2011 03:39 AM

i would not give out all that personal information to anyone like that- sounds too ... scary!
one of the reasons i've avoided the whole craigs list thing is because it seems like it (puts you out there) an invitation to anyone to come to your home...just doesn't seem like a safe thing
good that you are corresponding with this person without devulging personal information---and if you do decide this person is (legitimate) have you seen western union fees lately? that certainly needs to be factored in!

ptquilts 09-26-2011 03:43 AM

PS - they are NEVER legitimate!!

And, they are almost always overseas generated replies. I got my first one on a $400 tester bed I advertised 4 years ago. Sent it to CL's spam group.

If it's not a local response, don't bother with it. And always take the first buyer who shows up with cash in hand, regardless of who "says" they'll be there after work/on the weekend/when they've talked to hubby/been to the bank for cash/eaten their dinner/whatever other excuse, LOL!

ptquilts 09-26-2011 04:02 AM

and it doesn't matter what kind of category you put the ad in - looking for work? They offer you a job "processing checks" for them - you guessed it, they send you checks and you wire them money.
- looking for a place to live? they have a wonderful house you can live in for free, as long as you take the job "processing checks" for them.

And there's a whole nother lot of them "selling" cars they don't have but they will ship the car to you after you wire them money. Yeah, right.

romanojg 09-26-2011 04:06 AM

To be honest this sounds like a scam; I'd inform the admin for Craigslist and then delete the email. I'd definitely not give info so that they can send you a check. I'm particular who I give my name and address and phone number out to.

woody 09-26-2011 04:34 AM

We even get responses very similar to this in Australia   Blood sucking vultures, I wonder how many people they have scammed

emerald46 09-26-2011 04:43 AM

Just those those emails you get saying you have won $40 million. I still do not believe people fall for this garbage. You would think after this length of time CL would have a way to block those scam replies that have been around so long.

brushandthimble 09-26-2011 04:46 AM

I received an offer to buy, almost word for word as yours. I deleleted it without a reply. I wonder if he has had takers before, and that is why he keeps posting. Mine was about 2 years ago.

sparkys_mom 09-26-2011 04:48 AM

That sounds exactly like the spam emails we all get saying we have won a lottery we didn't enter and all we have to do is send $$$$ to someone for a processing fee and then we'll get the money. Right!!! :hunf:

purrfectquilts 09-26-2011 05:42 AM

No matter what I list on Craigs List I get a lot of these type of responses. So many, that I rarely list anything any more.

ptquilts 09-26-2011 05:52 AM

Just disable email responses ("hide) and get a Google Voice number, rings on your phone but is not traceable to you.

plus you get free long distance calls on Google Voice :D

scowlkat 09-26-2011 05:53 AM

Same thing when I listed a sewing machine on craigslist. Looks like a direct quote of the msg. I got!

CoyoteQuilts 09-26-2011 06:00 AM

I have received things like this from other sources than Craigs list....It's the same type of scam when you get a note or call from a 'friend' stranded in another country who has lost all their money and have had an accident and need your money 'right now' to get out of a jam...... Yeah, right!

finch 09-26-2011 06:25 AM

It is positively a scam.

Zhillslady 09-26-2011 06:50 AM

Thats a scam that has been on Craigslist for years. I quit posting things cause I was getting so many.

Debbie C 09-26-2011 06:53 AM

it screams SCAM!!! be very afraid and run the other way!!

Willa 09-26-2011 07:14 AM

Thank you for posting this warning. I know some might get tired of these thinking some are so obvious but when these happen I'm sure the receivers are not thinking about scams, but rather selling their item, their loved family member (jailed in another country scams), or whatever else thats going on around them. I'm hoping the more we see or hear of these the more aware we all become so we all stop and think. Again thanks for posting.

athomenow 09-26-2011 07:38 AM

What I love are the pics of cars that look brand new and they're selling for really cheap. The car is already in a container ready to be shipped and they'll pay the shipping both ways if you find you really don't want it. People must fall for this or they wouldn't keep doing it.

suebee 09-26-2011 07:49 AM

My DH got a very similar response when he posted our boat for sale on CL. That is nuts. Glad you didnt fall for it.

JenniePenny 09-26-2011 07:55 AM

The best way to handle this is really to do nothing. When the person responded to the CL ad, they didn't know your email address. It wasn't visible in Craig's List and they clicked on a link provided by CL. If you respond (even to give them a piece of your mind and to say "ARE YOU KIDDING, I am no dummy") they will then have your email address.
whenever you are selling anything, simply put in your ad,
Local buyers only; cash only; will not ship. Ignore the responses that don't comply to this.

sueisallaboutquilts 09-26-2011 07:58 AM

We've gotten the same emails before.
Gee, that person wants a lot of stuff LOL :D:D

I think it's a good idea to have them call too. I'll have to remember that.

DogHouseMom 09-26-2011 08:01 AM

SCAMMER! I've had people e-mail me with similar "instructions" to pay for PUPPIES!! Yeah ... right.

Don't even bother responding because then they know your e-mail address is valid.

judy363905 09-26-2011 08:09 AM

I also received a similar reply when I listed a bedroom suit. We are in AZ and it said they would send a moving van from PA....I knew it was a scam...btw I still have the bedroom set and glad we do it is now in our guest rooom

As tempting as it sounds, don't have them send you anything. You don't want to give your address out like that. I received the same response each time I posted anything on CL. that is why I don't even try any more.

watterstide 09-26-2011 02:00 PM

I know it is a scam, i always use a "disposable email" for craigs list.
this is the first time i have ever gotten this type of reply...

But i have heard and seen them on line before.

i never meet anyone at my house..always in a parking lot..well lit with lots of people.

With the quilt frame i am selling, they will have to come here..but it will be when the husband is home.

auniqueview 09-27-2011 03:05 AM

I would always add CASH SALES ONLY on the ads, and ignore anything else.

Screams of scam. Reminds me of the time I got a check for $5,000.00, told to cash it, keep $500.00 maill them the rest.

Just for the heck of it, I checked on the bank, etc. The bank was a real bank, real address, real name of person on the check.

So, I called the bank and told them what I had. They asked me to email them a copy, which I did. I then called the District attorney down there. They asked me to mail them the check. I told them I'd copy it and send a copy but because it had my name on it I was't mailing the real thing I think I knew for sure what was going on.

Several months later I got a call from the attorney asking for the real check, to write "Void" all over it in red. It seems they caught a ring of people pulling this scam. They printed checks with the name and routing number, address, everything, of a real bank in Tx. These people are now sitting in prison.

Glad I was able to help put them there.

auniqueview 09-27-2011 03:57 AM

Mark up one more for the good guys.

sandyo 09-27-2011 03:59 AM

unfortunatly some people believe this!!

QuiltswithConvicts 09-27-2011 04:08 AM

SCAM!!! The check they will send you is made of the finest quality RUBBER! Don't ask me how I know, but last summer DH got screwed big time but a scam such as this. Run, don't walk away from these people.

dharen7 09-27-2011 04:37 AM

I have a Tastefully Simple business, and a lot of us consultants received an email asking for 600.00 dollars worth of product, then next email address changed, next email oh big whoops sent check to large. Printed everything when check came took it to the bank check was real, had everything correct, drawn on a major lg hospital in this area account, never did hear from the bank if they caught them

ptquilts 09-27-2011 04:42 AM

someone was asking on another thread about mystery shoppers - this is another scam they pull - we want you to "mystery shop" the Western Union office. We will send you this check, cash it and wire most of it back to us using WU. Keep a percentage for your fee. Of course the whole check they send is bogus.
I have seen this several times on the court TV shows, when they get a third person involved to cash the check.

aorlflood 09-27-2011 04:43 AM

When I had my Pfaff 130 sewing machine listed on Craigslist, I got several "off the wall" responses...but none like this. I did have some one say they "need this bike...has it ever been in accident". LOL

Woodster 09-27-2011 04:55 AM

You shouldn't ever respond back to these type of scams.

Noiseynana 09-27-2011 04:58 AM

I think she's a nut case. I mean who in their right mind would send something like this to a person. Sounds llike she thinks you are a business. Or something. hehee

dotski 09-27-2011 05:03 AM

i got one from a supposed soldier in the war he couldn't contact me after this one email but he said to give him my paypal address so he can send the money and his contact man will pick up the furniture. he couldn't use the computer cause he was on a special mission.....for what stealing from people ...LOL. this is what you do when you have limited time on the comture in the war...shop for furniture !!!! that was the first and last time i went to craigslist.never trusted it to begin with but my friend suggested it.
