Yip -- I've read posts where others have done it and I admit, I've suffered absolutely NO jealousy or remorse that I hadn't done it.....but today is a different story!!! Yip, I cut the tip of my left middle finger almost off with the rotary cutter!!! It cut almost thru the tip and all the way thru the nail!!! I did it two nights ago...the skin on the finger is barely hanging on....noticed when redressinig that the skin is turning black. hmmmmmmmmmmmaybe I should have gone to ER!!!

I have to admit -- I type fast - clocked at 98 wpm in my hayday.....now I am hunting and pecking and it's AWFUL!!!!!!!!!

cjomomma 08-05-2010 06:33 AM

Sorry to hear that. You know them blades are always out for blood.

bearisgray 08-05-2010 06:34 AM

been there, done that.

bled quite well, i'm sure.

hope you heal quickly.

keep that finger tip protected - it will probably be more sensitive than the others.

sew_lulu 08-05-2010 06:35 AM

oh no.... hope it heals fast!

jamh 08-05-2010 06:39 AM

OUCH!!! I'm so worried I will do that!! I try so hard to be careful!! I hope you heals fast!!

Candace 08-05-2010 06:40 AM

I've not cut off any part of my body, but there's always tomorrow. OUCH!

KGoodhand 08-05-2010 06:41 AM

Maybe the doctor would be a good person to visit!

Ditter43 08-05-2010 07:13 AM

Oh no!!! Is the fingertip turning black because it's bruised? If not, you need to see the doctor asap!! :-(

sunflower126 08-05-2010 07:24 AM

Sounds to me that a trip to the docs would be in your best interest. Wouldn't want you to lose the finger or worse.

dakotamaid 08-05-2010 10:46 AM

If it is turning black, time for the doc!

CarrieAnne 08-05-2010 11:28 AM

Ouch! That really doesnt soundgood. Please at least call the Doc!!!!!

GrammaNan 08-05-2010 11:42 AM

Next time we hear from you I hope it is after you have seen the doctor today. Black can mean imminent infection. Sew sorry to hear that you did it. Go to the doc then let us know how you are doing. (((HUGS)))

SuziC 08-05-2010 01:34 PM

I hope you are okay!! I have never done that (probably will now) but i can imageine the pain...Ouch
Hope it heels fast

nativetexan 08-05-2010 02:18 PM

oh girl. do go get it seen to. i had to wear a metal finger guard for over a month due to the nerves being cut.

MadQuilter 08-05-2010 02:53 PM

YEP! Even if they will just nip off the dangly bit. You should have it checked for infection.

BellaBoo 08-05-2010 03:32 PM

You probably needed stitches. Never think twice about going to the ER, just go!

amandasgramma 08-05-2010 04:31 PM

It's not that bad! Now that it's quit bleeding I can see how much was cut off. It did cut the very end and left a flap...cut thru the nail at an angle. No ligaments or tendons are involved...and I believe the black I saw was blood. I'm going to soak it tonight. Too late for doctor -- no stitches after 24 hrs (according to our doctor) :-D Thank you for your concern. I have a minimal medical background -- worked for a doctor in a one-horse town with 3 mills around us. I "kinda" know when it's serious. This hurt MORE than it was serious.

reach for the stars 2 08-05-2010 04:43 PM

I did that once and it's not nice. Hope it heals nice, and I hope we never do it again. Take care

granniebj 08-05-2010 07:07 PM

I really hate to say this, but I haven't done that yet. Don't want to jinx myself here. I sure hope yours heals fast!

Leota 08-05-2010 07:17 PM

My mother always says that if you draw blood, the garment/item you are sewing will be gorgeous. :D So hope your finger heals quickly. I would wear a finger guard to protect it till it's completely healed. You never realize how many times you bump your fingers till they are injured.

KarenSimon 08-05-2010 07:21 PM

I've done it twice. First time ER put in three stitches. Second time just cut it clean off. DH told me I couldn't use it again until I got a guard on the ruler. Haven't made any more boo-boos. But I'm much more careful.

nursie76 08-05-2010 07:25 PM

I am glad that it doesn't seem to be infected, but I still think a visit to the doc might be wise...especially if it has been a while since you had a tetanus shot.

Janstar 08-05-2010 07:51 PM

OMG! That gives me chills! I'll be extra careful from now on!

Is there such a thing as a guard for the ruler?????? I have to admit, it makes me nervous to use the cutters now!!! :(

Olivia's Grammy 08-06-2010 07:11 AM

Poor thing. I would be a little more respectful of the rotary.

quilter68 08-06-2010 07:47 AM

So sorry to read about your sore finger.

Hope it heals fast,

quilter68 who is now 69

I should add that the E.R. Dr. was able to stitch 7 stitches to less than an inch on my left index finger. He said he put 4 stiches but my primary took out 7 stitches. We were talking and laughing so he must have lost count. It is barely visable now.

finch 08-07-2010 03:43 AM

I wish they would invent something for us rotory cutting users.Meat cutters have special gloves. We all might need a pair of those.I hope it gets better and heals quickly for you.

mawmawbeve_60 08-07-2010 04:40 AM

ouch....hope it heals Fast!

Tinabodina 08-07-2010 05:25 AM

OOOUUUUCCCHHHH! Hope you get better soon! :hunf:

amandasgramma 08-07-2010 06:13 AM

I changed the dressing last night and it looks SOOOOOO much better! I'm actually wearing a smaller dressing today and can now TYPE with both hands!!!! :D Yes, it was an OUUUUCH! But kicking myself in the butt seems to hurt a lot worse..

litacats 08-07-2010 07:17 AM

my DH is always doing that but with a stanley knife I don't muck around I take him straight to er I rang them one day to say he was coming in and they said don't come before 5PM as the Dr won't be there to stitch it and I replied there is nothing left to stitch, he had cut of the whole side of his finger from the tip to the first joint, when we got there she said I see waht you mean. he is so well known in er it isn't funny anymore. he did heal ok after months of going to the dressing clinics. now when they treat him they give me the bandages and so forth and I treat him at home after the first couple of visits, I could probably get a job at the dressing clinic DH thinks I do a better job of bandaging than they do, I guess practice makes perfect and I have had lots of that. he took me in one day and they all had a shock cause it was me not him

Shemjo 08-07-2010 07:30 AM

Ouch! I fear that I will be guilty of that! I will take extra care to not join you.
Hope it heals quickly and you never even get close to that again.

quilterguy27 08-07-2010 08:08 AM

I don't have a ruler guard and I don't wear a glove. I am just VERY careful. Hope my luck holds out. But... if you want a glove, Fons & Porter has them. If you've ever seen there show they ALWAYS wear a glove while cutting. I've also heard of guards for your ruler, but haven't seen one so I don't know anything about it, but it may be worth checking out. Hope you are healing well. Take care of it!!!

lynnie 08-07-2010 09:13 AM

i can symphatize with you, did the same to the same finger on St. Pat's day 2001, it grew back snippede tip of bone off to.
Quilting scars. I told people i hd a quilt accident and they looked at me strangly. Second time i did it to. Ya think I'd learn.
get better soon

Nan Quilts 08-07-2010 09:53 AM

I just have two words for you..."cutting glove"! It's a really good idea to have the dr check it out for infection. Better safe that sorry! Praying you heal quickly!

Hugs,
Nan

Lyn 08-07-2010 01:35 PM

Been there, done that, got the tee shirt. How many times?

lnikkers52 08-07-2010 05:39 PM

starlight 08-07-2010 07:15 PM

I am currently healing from the same type of cut. Thankfully it is healing but it sounds like you might want to think about seeing the doctor. It is soooooo painful!!

JudithAnn 08-07-2010 07:49 PM

Get thee quickly to the dr!!!

craftybear 08-07-2010 07:52 PM
