Guess I am one of those heading for buys at re-sale shops, and re-working
old cotton clothing.

wolph33 01-02-2011 08:26 AM

that is not good

Our JoAnn's her in St. Louis moved to a bigger store and the prices on EVERYTHING went up ... material, markers, thread, etc. I just thought it was local and because of the new store. Our local Wal-Mart still has fabric and it is 100% cotton, mostly for 4.99/yd although I did see some yesterday that was 8.99/yd, very pricey for Wal-Mart. Most Wal-Mart stores are phasing out this department.

I was going to say the same thing! And as long as people buy it the prices will keep going up. You can buy a quilt through a catalog for less than it costs to make one. But we are a breed unto ourselves and we like to make a quilt or two or three or four, but don't like to have to pay for "big business" in a small business area. I will keep going to JoAnn's because somehow, someway in that store (every time I go), I find a bargain and it is good fabric and I like it/love it and that is all I need.

Gas, however, is something else. $3.00 a gallon. Here in St. Paul as other places there is a card we get from Roundy's, our grocery store, where they take off 10 cents on so much bought at the store. A few days ago, my husband bought gas at BP (which I don't want to buy from in the first place) for $1.30 off the $2.96 a gallon price. Now, they have discontinued the gas thing at Roundy's. Hey, you out there - remember when gas was 25 cents a gallon and cigarettes were even cheaper? I don't smoke anymore - haven't for a million years, but I still remember the prices. I remember practically filling a tank for $1.00.

So, we will look for bargains any where we can and pride ourselves in the good deal we got.

KEEP MAKING AND PROCESSING OUR OWN COTTON IN OUR OWN COUNTRY. I'd rather pay more for fabric made in our own country and keep people in work and keep our own country going. It seems to me that quilters are going to be the ones that are going to save this country. Edie

Hate to admit that I remember gas prices being in the 50 cent range, but I do. Out here in Phoenix it's just getting to $3, but the price of cigarettes which are poison? I am so thankful I NEVER smoked - hated them in even in High School. My husband quilt smoking 25 years ago and then it was just a pipe, but I sure LOVED the smell of the bourbon tobacco!

Melinda in Tulsa 01-02-2011 09:19 AM

I used to shop at Joann's and Hancocks but it seems to me like the higher the prices go, the quality gets lower. I now shop my LQS sales and get better fabric for cheaper than Joann's and Hancocks. Even the non sale prices are cheaper than Joann's. Might just be my area of the country tho, as we are extremely lucky to have many LQS here.

Ours has a red tag section, and then a clearance section on the back wall near the employee exit. A couple of times a year those prices, which are already 50 to 70% off, drop in half again. I've had some good scores there, so I always check that section!

This is not to be confused with the half off the red tag fabrics, which happens more often. It's best to get there on the first day of those sales before the quilting fabric gets picked over. I've had some major scores that way. It may be the only way I'll be shopping at Joann's now!

News is very upsetting.

grannypat7925 01-02-2011 09:29 AM

If it goes up that much......so long JoAnn's!!!

GrammaBabs 01-02-2011 09:38 AM

It is so very sad when something like a hobby gets to be so expensive.... think about this... quilting/knitting/crochet or sewing in general used to be a "necessity"... it's now supposed to be for pleasure,,, and not cost effective at all... I'm at a lucky place in my life and can afford to enjoy the hobby,,, but i am determined to use the enormous stash i've managed to create over the years... i am going to pic colors from my "wall" of fabric and if need be, get a solid to work them together..(sheets can work too, i've found out).. they will probably be for charity or raffles anyway..
I worked in yarn shops and fabric shops all my life.. home dec as well, so needles to say, my sewing room is "stuffed" to put it mildly, but i'm gonna "work it down"...
ps... for those of you that haven't visited... there is a site called "quiltville" that has the most wonderful girl sharing her scrap ideas for organizing and storing and making.... Bonnie Hunter i believe,,, check the site and you'll be there for hours.. finding ways to use up all that you have, no matter what color!!!! i think!!!!
HNY... hugs Barbara

They've closed the Hancock's chain stores around me but do you all realize that Hancock's of Paducah is NO RELATION to the chain Hancocks? H of P has the MOST fabulous line of all fabrics and notions and their Batiks will make you cry! Their prices are no higher (if not lower) than the average quilt shop and of course in the actual store in KY and on their website (www.hancocks-paducah.com) they have sales. If you ever get the chance to shop the store while at the AQS Quilt Shows you will think you've arrived at the Pearly Gates!! Ask for their catalog!

grandma to 8 01-02-2011 10:49 AM

I havent bought any fabric at a Joannes store for several years as their quality of fabric is poor, however I have found some poor quality fabrics at LQS also. We will just have to be a wise shoppers. I am lucky enough to have a large stash and will be using that up before buying more. I live 90 miles from the nearest quilt shop and gas was $3.22 a gallon a couple of weeks ago. Guess Ill just have to stay home and sew.
PS Barbara I love, love, love Quiltville. Bonnie has some wonderful ideas.

grandma to 8 01-02-2011 10:56 AM

Forgot to mention, yard sales and auctions are great places to add to a stash if the family had a crafter that is down sizing. Have found some great things.

fabricmaniac 01-02-2011 11:06 AM

I just went on to Hancocks of Paducah's site and they have hoards of fabric on sale. I just bought several half yards and whole yards for as LITTLE AS $1.99/HALF YARD!!! ANY quilting fabric you buy from H of P is the very best quality.

Izaquilter 01-02-2011 11:07 AM

I never, never thought you'd hear me saying this but before I will pay JoAnn's prices, I would go to a local quilt shop or to Hobby Lobby & pay their prices. Even if it meant buying less fabric. It's a shame how JoAnn's has went up & up on their fabric in the yrs that I've been quilting but now they are using the price of cotton going as an "excuse" to raise their prices. I love JoAnn's but I think they are pricing themselves right out of the quilter's market.

OraLee 01-02-2011 11:18 AM

Was in Georgia over Thanksgiving and there are plenty of cotton fields there. So why do we have to buy cotton from over seas? There is plenty here in the United States.

sewer 01-02-2011 11:31 AM

I can remember buying fabric in the 50's for 19 cents.....could make a gathered skirt for less than 75 cents.......i guess i won't buying much fabric for awhile as i have a large stash and if i do it will have to be on sale.

Airwick156 01-02-2011 11:35 AM

That explains why when I was at Joanns this past Thursday to get some fabric the calico's were 9.99 a yard. Oh man never paid much attention. At the rate that fabric is going up in price eventually none of us will be able to afford to buy any fabric. :( Im sad too.

Airwick156 01-02-2011 11:36 AM

I think they are too. What a shame.

Airwick156 01-02-2011 11:45 AM

I remember my mom sending me to the corner store with a note and 32 cents to pick her up a pack of Virginia Slim Cigarettes. I remember my mom also pulling up to the gas station and telling the man $2.00 please and it filling up her gas tank. I remember buying a Reeses Peanut butter cup double pack for 10 cents. I remember not having to lock your doors at night or even shutting them. But the times have changed. Now Gas here in Oregon is $3.15 or more now, It takes us $65.00 to fill up our vans gas tank. Luckily I no longer smoke, but cigarettes for cheap generic ones here are $5.95. And for a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup double pack..is 95 cents. UNREAL. AND I DO SHUT AND LOCK MY DOORS.

BettyGee 01-02-2011 01:12 PM

Wow, that's a major bummer. I am really happy that I built up my stash by taking advantage of many online offers. Spent more than I had planned, but am very happy with my purchases; plus the new relationships I've made with new suppliers. Jo-Anns has always been where I run to when I need something right now and the ladies there are always so helpful. Well, rats!

Patchworkmarion 01-02-2011 01:40 PM

You would cry a lot more if you lived in Australia. We pay up to $30 a metre (39").I wait for the sales, usually at $10.

Mumzbear 01-02-2011 02:07 PM

Our JoAnn's is closed on Sunday but there are four of the worker's cars there today. Maybe they are changing prices! I will watch for bargains other places. I'm not totally happy with JoAnn's anyway. They have such huge selvages with their name printed on it that you loose so much width in your fabric. All the flannel I bought last is that way!

Talking about their flannel, the solids are so thin and I'm not that impressed with the quilters flannel. It just doesn't compare to the quilt shop flannel.

Tell me about it! Last Christmas a lady called to ask me if I would make a flannel rag quilt for her Granddaughter. I did but didn't realize she'd already bought about 8 pieces of JoAnn's flannels. I told her I would still do it but could not guarantee the results after laundering She said... Not to worry, she understood and had let her 8 year old GD pick whatever she wanted. I made the rag quilts, snipped it and offered to launder it for her first because I know HOW to!! And I was afraid the "mother" of the child would freak out when she saw the residue left in the washer. (I sift and sift and sift when I wash one for the first time). Well this quilt was a disaster after the washing. Not only twice as much residue (1 Inch seam allowances) but the flannel itself was HORRID!!! I have never in my sewing life seen such extreme pilling on a fabric. It was so discouraging. I spent hours using a sweater de-piller to get it to look half ways decent for my customer. She was very understanding and didn't hold me responsible in any way. NEVER EVER will I buy flannel from JoAnns.

craftymatt2 01-02-2011 03:49 PM

I have several friends that work at Joann's and they both say the same, cotton is going up because of the floods and one is a district manager. And Pet Smart bought them out. I haven't been to JoAnns since the holidays but I will stop by and see if our prices went up. But the last I saw there was no price increase

penski 01-02-2011 04:59 PM

well then i better get on over to Joanns this week for some stock up fabric

thanks

nonnie60 01-02-2011 05:06 PM

I choose not to frequent JoAnn's before the buy out and prices going up due to our local store being hard to deal with and giving out bad attitudes. I can find outher places that are nicer and better prices.

I purchase most of my fabric at HOBBY LOBBY. Prices are reasonable. Especially with the 40% off one cut. We do not have a Joann's here in the Rio Grade Valley. We do have one in Traverse City, Michigan. Guess I'll find another source, like on line.

TootieAnn 01-02-2011 06:05 PM

I agree! I bought some "filler" fabric at Hancock's before Christmas only because LQS was closed when I was able to go shopping. I was thankful I only needed a small amount. I really do prefer the quality of the LQS and I like supporting a small business. I would have loved to receive a gift certificate to LQS for Christmas, but I didn't. I think my mom is intimidated by LQS and I told her not to bother with Joanne's or Hancock's. My mom sews but doesn't quilt. Oh well...maybe next year? In defense of my mom though I really did get some GREAT presents. I was happy with what I got!

TootieAnn 01-02-2011 06:05 PM

Absolutely!

jacie 01-02-2011 06:18 PM

so much of their fabric is $1.00 off per yard,,,,,,,so NO coupons can be used, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Daisygirl 01-02-2011 06:20 PM

Maybe the service would be better at Jo-Annes if a ew company took them oveR. The workers at the store by me are not very accommodating.

Grandma Peg 01-02-2011 06:22 PM

Way too sad. Will have to watch the sales online.

This just means we as a group, will be 'investigating other sources of supply for our demand'. When we slow our buying, they will get the message. Has anyone noticed that the worst the economy gets, the greedier business gets? Like they have to 'get theirs' before we can use it. Is it even real to believe that wealthy IS healthy? For any of us?

I am in Fallbrook, CA...rather rural... and we do not lock our doors...the house is old and has many windows and 7 french doors ...anyone can brake in...so why lock things up!
I need to trust that people are honest...if not, then I will cope!
