Many years ago I just never bought directional fabric. When making quilts using it I never have a problem. I no longer make clothing. Just quilts.

I have done that many times.

Take heart, we all stumble into some of these things from time to time. I think you have a pretty good fix this time. Yes, those home ec. classes were important and I wish they were still taught in schools today.

I took a master tailoring class many, many years ago and my instructor took care to remind us to cut many parts of a suit one at a time.
