... it's that awful odor that comes out the first time you turn the furnace on for the season.

erstan947 10-03-2011 07:49 AM

We are still running the AC. Maybe one day the heater will get used.....just not today. :)

Rose L 10-03-2011 07:50 AM

You could heat with wood and get that down home scent :-D

COYOTEMAGIC 10-03-2011 07:51 AM

Why does it do that? I was asleep when DH started the heater. I thought he was burning down the house. It did set off the smoke detectors!

Favorite Fabrics 10-03-2011 07:52 AM

I've always figured that the odor was that of the dust in the ductwork burning off.

I don't think it would be a good idea to heat with wood in our shop. I'm just not that sure that our customers would like appreciate smoked fabric. (Smoked bacon, maybe... but not fabric!)

My daughter had to turn her furnace on last Fri because her kids were cold. She also said it smelled bad. Mine will too but I refuse to turn it on till Nov. 1. I just keep wrapping up in quits till then.

PegD 10-03-2011 07:54 AM

It's all the dust bunnies that were trying to hide. Mine smells the same.

blueangel 10-03-2011 07:55 AM

I haven't had to turn mine on yet.

hensandhollyhocks 10-03-2011 07:56 AM

Still running the AC here too!

carhop 10-03-2011 07:59 AM

We have had a couple of days that I could turn off a/c and open windows untill around 3pm then a/c back on central FL

np3 10-03-2011 08:27 AM

Open window here and loving it!

RedGarnet222 10-03-2011 09:02 AM

Sounds like you should change the filter and give it a quick spray with fabrese

Jim's Gem 10-03-2011 09:32 AM

Ours really smells like burning dust when it comes on too. But that won't happen for a while!!!

vicki reno 10-03-2011 09:35 AM

I grew up in LA. and can remember family gatherings at Christmas with the a/c on!

SuzyQ 10-03-2011 09:40 AM

We had that smell this weekend too. If this cold rain doesn't stop we're gonna smell even worse LOL

amandasgramma 10-03-2011 09:41 AM

I know the feeling -- we had to turn ours on not long ago -- we're expecting snow this week!!!!

bjnicholson 10-03-2011 09:45 AM

We had to turn ours on last night when we got in from Connecticut. I was too tired to notice if it smelled or not. I drove back. It took 8 hrs. (It took my son 9 hrs to drive there, bobbing and weaving the whole time  )

NanaCsews2 10-03-2011 09:47 AM

Around here it is dust in the air vents when furnace turned on and outdoor fire pit smell coming in when we do have the windows open. Nasty when it is in the house, wonderful when sitting out enjoying it ourselves.

athomenow 10-03-2011 11:36 AM

Sounds like you need to get a furnace tune up, cleaning and making sure everything is ok for the season. Just had my moms done and he said there was so much crap in there it could have started a fire. We usually do the tune up every couple of years at least.

Here in Texas a/c is still on also! We finally have cooler weather this week and the past weekend was beautiful!

CloverPatch 10-03-2011 12:57 PM

I like it!
That fresh burn of the coil heating up and burning up all the dust that has collected all summer. Makes me feel all warm
I HATE being cold!!!

Then you'd love it upstairs in our shop, CloverPatch. It's so warm up there we get to have the window upon all year round.

Seriously.

The only time it is not above 80 degrees is late spring and early fall. Anytime we have the heat on, it's way too hot upstairs (due to the furnace). And anytime we have the AC on, it was already too hot from the weather.

The joys of being in a 100-year-old building. :? But the location is perfect, just a mile from home for me. And since, like you, I prefer being warm to being cold, I'm okay with it.

If I need to cool off, all I have to do is stick my head out the window. Or walk downstairs. It's more temperate down there!

our hardware store sells scents you can attach toyour furnace filter, they are wonderful!

I LOVE THAT SMELL! It is so warm smelling. Edie

susie0808 10-04-2011 04:53 AM

This morning I have a blanket wrapped around me. It's 51 degrees out. Done with the a/c. This time every year I always try to turn my heat on close to Nov 1st. Most of the time I can't get there. The damp weather creeps in even blankets don't help. I just want to try to give my electric bill a break.

The smell always comes the fist time running the heat.It has something to do with warming up the unit. Since it has been sitting cold for a few months.

Nell 10-04-2011 05:36 AM

Any more information about "Good Night Moon" fabric?

auniqueview 10-04-2011 05:37 AM

It smells like the unit is catching fire, lol. I will have dh clean the filter, duct, etc before we even think of turning our unit on for the 3 - 4 days we will need it, lol lol

oh! what a great thought! :-P sharet

BabyCakes 10-04-2011 05:51 AM

My old furnace did that. My new one(2yrs old) does not.

Wanabee Quiltin 10-04-2011 05:56 AM

Its furnace dust you smell. Goes away pretty quickly if you burn some candles the day you light the furnace.

Know what you mean ... it's actually the DUST burning and also the residue on gas burners in older furnaces
It's a good idea to have gas furnaces checked every fall - to be safe. Another very good idea - install Carbon Monoxide sensors in your home :)

OmaForFour 10-04-2011 09:51 AM

YUMMM and Yeahhhhh! I love it when we start up our wood stove! Smells so good and feels so cozy!

We just started using the heat again two days ago. We have a severe storm warning for tonight with gale force winds. Guess winter has arrived.

Try vacuuming the furnace, before you turn it on for the season. I would sneeze and sneeze before I learned this trick.

NOOOOOO!

Please don't use the "W" word yet.

Somebody tell me it isn't true....!

Rann 10-04-2011 12:20 PM

Mine smelled like burning dust so I turned it off.

It IS the burning dust that smells :)

jaciqltznok 10-04-2011 12:49 PM

I burn off for the first time while it is like today... have the doors open because it is SO nice outside...that way, the smell goes out and I really don't feel the furnace heat, because the doors/windows are open...you only need to run for about 30 minutes...so no real waste and it beats that smell!
