I am still in awe. This morning as I hand watered my vegetable garden I had a couple unexpected visitors. A female hummingbird flew into the spray from the hose. I moved it thinking that she would drown but she flew back into it. So I moved it back to where it was. She flitted about a bit and then she settled onto a squash leaf and started bathing. It was SO cool. She wiggled her tiny tail feathers and her wings. I was transfixed and didn't move a muscle. Not even to pick my jaw up off the ground. I have never seen anything like this. And, THEN, if that is not total overload, here comes the male. So gorgeous with his ruby chin and iridescent green back. He started flying back and forth through the spray.Like most men he was taking a shower. This went on for some minutes. They finally flew off into a nearby tree. WOW! An aside .... my green beans will not need water for a few days now.

I love hummingbirds. I'm lucky if I can get them to come to the feeder.

I would willingly sacrifice the green beans to over-watering to see that. (I'm sure your beans will be fine)

AskaGirl 05-06-2011 09:33 AM

So cool! Ours come to the feeder, but are too skittish when we open the door. What a neat experience!

I had a jaw dropping moment with a hummer several years ago. Early spring, it was going to be a cold night so I took the feeder down to make sure it had nectar in it. As I was holding it a hummer landed on it and fed. Guess he thought it was his last chance! It was awesome.

emerald46 05-06-2011 12:23 PM

I'm glad our hummers are back in Texas!

SaraSewing 05-06-2011 12:31 PM

Cool story! The Hummers have arrived back in Utah. They flit around us whenever we are outside and just snub their little nose at the cat.

wanda lou 05-06-2011 12:37 PM

I still have to put my feeders out. Well it is on my hubby's do list.

ssgramma 05-07-2011 05:32 AM

How awesome! I have a birdbath on the deck railing right outside the kitchen window and have caught a couple of fun bathing events but no hummers.

NatalieMacDonald 05-07-2011 05:34 AM

What a wonderful close up of nature you had. Where was the camera! We have a water feature of kids holding an unbrella and the water falls from the top of it. The hummingbirds would land on the top of the umbrella and slide down it and start all over again. Such fun to watch.

I see God's humor in the hummingbird: so tiny yet fiesty and fearless and unintimidated.

Thanks for sharing.

grannypat7925 05-07-2011 05:53 AM

Novice.for.now 05-07-2011 05:58 AM

Love your experience. How special was that!

Lady Diana 05-07-2011 06:13 AM

Hummingbirds absolutely love spinklers.
We set one by our flower bed at the ranch and watch them play. They also like flying in light rain. I was standing with the cabin door open when it was raining and one flew up to within 5 inches of my nose and just stayed there looking me in the eye for about ten seconds, turned his head to the side to get a better look and flew around to the other side of the cabin to get a drink from the feeder. I told my husband I felt like I was in a Disney movie......they are wonderful little birds and have incredible memories. We had a feeder in a spot on our cabin, but moved it because the hot Texas sun would heat the feeder too much. Six years later, we would see the birds go to that hanger looking for that feeder.

I always amazed by natures displays of simplicity and how mesmerized we become when we stop to observe the simple beauty in life. Your green beans will thank you for the deep watering by sending their roots deep into the earth and producing a bounty for you...Thank you for sharing your blessing of nature today... :-D

sandybuttons 05-07-2011 01:03 PM
