I quit smoking!

I quit smoking 6 weeks ago after struggling for years to quit. I tried everything. Finally my doctor gave me a prescription for Chantix. It works! I do have some side effects but nothing terrible: vivid dreams, constipation and gas. I don't know how this works exactly but it made quitting possible without suffering much. I thought I'd never be able to quit. :o

raedar63 10-11-2013 05:12 AM

Oh I am so proud of you!!!!!! I too have battled this terrible addiction and know how hard it is . I hope you are going to get yourself something special with all the money you are saving :)

Tartan 10-11-2013 05:19 AM

Congratulations!

Neesie 10-11-2013 05:43 AM

Congratulations!

For the intestinal side-effects, try drinking more water. Taking an acidophilus supplement also helps the gut. :) The acidophilus may take a couple of weeks, before you see a difference, so don't give up on it.

mighty 10-11-2013 06:09 AM

Congrats, that is wonderful!

alwayslearning 10-11-2013 06:58 AM

I quit 15 years ago using Zyban. The best thing is after many years of heavy smoking, I have never once been tempted to go back. May you be as lucky as I am!

LynnVT 10-11-2013 07:00 AM

GOOD FOR YOU! Yes, I am shouting - cheering for you. I wish certain relatives of mine would quit. It's not just for your sake, but for those who love you. Now you'll have all that extra $$ for fabric!

buslady 10-11-2013 07:10 AM

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! My DD is trying. At least she says she is. Quit once, then started again. Don't let that happen to you!!! Great Job, you should be very proud of yourself.

Kimkankwilt 10-11-2013 08:27 AM

Diannia 10-11-2013 08:41 AM

Congratulations!!!!

My sister was in her 70's when she had to have surgery of some sort. She just asked her primary Dr. about Chantix. He just slipped it in her other meds and wa-la she has never smoked since. She doesn't even want one. Only when she is near someone when they light up.

CharlotteO 10-11-2013 08:55 AM

Happy Dance indeed!!! Congratulations on your willpower.

quiltsRfun 10-11-2013 08:55 AM

Good for you! Not only will this be good for your health, but think of all the extra cash it frees up to support your other addiction - quilting supplies. :)

EllieGirl 10-11-2013 09:27 AM

Congratulations! My mom smoked for over 30 years. She stopped in 1971. She's still alive and kicking at 98. Her dr told her at one point that was the best thing she ever did.

momto5 10-11-2013 11:54 AM

I quit when I was almost 50...21 years ago! The best thing I've ever done for myself...and the way it happened was funny....the patch had just come out, and my doc was looking for some patients to try it on...told him I didn't want to quit, but he insisted. So...after years smoking, four months on the patch and it was over...
CONGRATULATIONS AND STICK WITH IT! It really, truly, is worth it!

Jingle 10-11-2013 12:31 PM

I quit once for 12-1/2 years, was around smokers for about 10 weekends straight. I started back and don't plan to quit again. At 68 and being the second oldest of my siblings I am still alive, they are all dead.
Congrats to you, stay away from smokers and never try just one.

bjrusty 10-11-2013 12:40 PM

I quit to, Halloween will be a year for me. Can't beleive I've made it. I used Commit nicotine lozengers. So I splurged, went and got myself a new sewingmachine, a Viking Eden Rose 250. Love it and alot better than cigs. lol Barb

decky 10-11-2013 03:46 PM

drgranny 10-11-2013 03:57 PM

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! I have been quit for about 25yrs, after "quitting many times. I quit with prayer and cold turkey!!! I every once in a while see someone driving and smoking and think, I could do that. Then I really chastise myself!!!! Other than that I have never wanted to start again. I smoked a pak a day. At my worst I smoked 3 pk a day for about 6 mo. I can't stand cigarette smoke now and someone who reeks of it almost makes me sick. I often wonder if I used to smell that way. Probably did.

0tis 10-11-2013 04:39 PM

Congratulations - you deserve to treat yourself. I quilt about 12 yrs ago - It was really rough - so I understand what an achievement this is - now think of all that money you will save so you can buy more fabric.

NJ Quilter 10-11-2013 04:54 PM

Good for you! Congrats. DH quit about 10 yrs ago. A friend of mine from decades ago quit smoking at one point. Continued to put away the same $$ spend on cigs each week. Many home improvements and lots of fund came from her 'ciggy money'. As far as I know she still does this 25 years later.

suebee 10-11-2013 05:04 PM

Hi Mary - CONGRATULATIONS...I too quit smoking with the help of Chantix over 1yr ago now. I love NOT smoking.
The only side effect I had was nausea at odd times. So I finally just quit taking it...which by the way they do not recommend you stop taking without your doctor knowing. Im so happy for you!!

I hope you get a sore arm patting yourself on the back!!!!!!!! Awesome!!! and you deserve some special treats! Anything in the quilting line . . . machines, fabric, rulers, notions, etc. etc. A special quilting road trip??????

I quit 30+ years ago before they had any help products. It's a very hard thing to do with or without help, but I hope you Are proud of yourself....we sure are!

hopetoquilt 10-11-2013 05:59 PM

I am proud of you and hope this inspires others to quit. I am trying to get my brother to quit smoking and drinking alcohol. Both habits are wreaking havoc on his health. He refuses to quit or even admit he has a problem. I just gently offer support every once in a while to plant the seed that he needs to quit. I know pushing him won't work but I want him to know I will help him quit if he wants help.

Pilgrim 10-11-2013 06:05 PM

Congratulations, and continued success. I just had a bone density test today after falling and breaking my hip on September 3. They said it is healing very well and I am doing excellent. They told me that if a person smokes or drinks alcohol that vitamins and minerals are not absorbed properly. I am on a lot of vitamins and bone medicine and hope that it will help restore my bones to good health. I have always drank milk, eaten cheese, and been very active so not sure why I broke it but I did. Just some more good reasons to stop smoking.

DonnaPBradshaw 10-11-2013 06:08 PM

It's a great day when someone quits an addiction like smoking! Way to go! you have just started on a path of better health! I have never smoked and don't plan on ever starting. I have another addiction like buying fabric which is not as dangerous to my health!

sassey 10-11-2013 06:38 PM

Congratulations. I didnt do as good as you I stopped cold Turkey many times. When I ad cancer at age 40 I decided I would quit once and for all. After a year at a party I decided you can not drink without smoking so started smoking I promised myself I would trow away what was left in the pack well I finished the pack and smoked for a few years. Was smoking 2 packs a day plus was also smoking clove cigarettes whic are very bad for you I quit again but continued smoking cloves 1 pack a week. I was mad when they quit selling clov cig in the us But now I am glad havent smoked anything for about 3 years

cathyvv 10-11-2013 07:34 PM

Yay! Yahoo! Superb! Woo-Hoo! and all the other celebratory words you can think of!

Chasing Hawk 10-11-2013 08:02 PM

Congrats Mary! You will be amazed how much better you feel. Your sense of smell comes back with a vengeance....lol
You will be shocked to think you once smelled so bad...LOL

We quit over 9 1/2 yrs ago. Since then our breathing has improved, my asthma is more manageable as well as my allergies. We used the patch for about 2 months.
And we have paid off 3 trucks with the money saved from buying smokes.

MaryStoaks 10-11-2013 08:09 PM

Thanks everyone for the encouraging words. You are all the best support !:o:thumbup: Mary

Now to just get the extra weight off!!!

Anniedeb 10-11-2013 09:59 PM

Congratulations! That is great. I smoked for over 20 years, and quit 28 years ago. I know what a struggle it can be. Stay strong!!

Edie 10-12-2013 03:33 AM

I quit 30 years ago TODAY!!!!! Our son said to me and I'll never forget it - "Mom, the devil is making you smoke and he wants you to DIE". And he did emphasize DIE. I didn't plan on doing that. So did I miss anything by quitting? I don't think so. Son got married, son had children, children had children, Dad passed away, Husband passed away, Mother passed away, I collect Social Security (something I never would have thought of 30 years ago. I am a great grandmother. I am still quilting. My life is good. Do I ever think about picking up a cigarette again - since this past March, you bet. But I didn't, I wouldn't and I won't.

Congratulations to you and everyone else who didn't let the devil reel you in! Now get back to your sewing. Edie

November 18 will be one year. Although I would still like to have one, I have so far held out. I quit this time for one day. A lifetime seemed too long. A day at a time I have been able to handle. Good luck on your quest!

annievee 10-12-2013 04:47 AM

Congrats ! Look forward, do not go back to habit !

janbland 10-12-2013 04:58 AM

It is the best thing you will ever do for yourself! I quit about 15 years ago after smoking 35 years. I can't stand the smell of cigarettes now. If a smoker walks by me, I can tell in a heartbeat.

My sister is a nurse and she checked my oxygen level and was impressed that it was so high since I am a former smoker. She said it just goes to show that you can recover your health after you stop smoking.

coopah 10-12-2013 04:59 AM

Awesome!! You rock! You're going to feel so much better!

kittiebug 10-12-2013 05:11 AM

Good for you...........

Congratulations, first of all, on being determined to give up smoking. My husband took Chantix to stop smoking and he has been nicotine free for 4 years.
