Ideas for quick & easy stuff to make for a church sale.

I know this has been asked on here before, but silly me can't find it when I need it.
I have made a lap quilt and DH is working on a wood sculpture for the auction. But we have a "general store sale" also. I have made around 50 pocket tissue holders and a few little quick odds and ends ( pot holders, pin cushions, aprons,..) Was looking on here for some ideas. I know only to go to the experts, so here I am. Ideas Please!!!!!!
Thanks, Penny

* Christmas ornaments?
.... made with miniature quilt blocks.

* mug rugs
.... great way to use your scraps and leftovers

* placemats
.... no piecing, just use a print from your larger leftovers!

I think someone had made little stuffed mice out of felt with leather shoe laces for tails.

Matchbook needle holders.

A cocoa kit - a package of instant cocoa, some marshmallows, a candy cane - with or without a mug.

Bottled water, pop/soda, cookies - but that may be elsewhere at the sale.

Card holders or baskets.

Christmas card "tote" - place for addresses, stamps, cards, etc.

Christmas stockings. Mini ones to use as tree decorations.

Tartan 09-11-2013 10:50 AM

Casserole carriers or the little fabric and elastic padded circles for the knobs on top of the casserole lid. The little mini dress/ kitchen towels fr the oven handle. 10 minute table runners.

Radiana 09-11-2013 10:56 AM

How about tooth fairy pockets. They can be made in the shape of a tooth or an envelope shape with the words" for the tooth fairy" embroidered on.

Thanks to you all. Thank you Radiana, Tartan, Bearisgray. Some neat ideas that my brain couldn't think of.
Isn't strange you think of stuff or see stuff, but when you need them your brain goes blank!

I Spy game, ten pair of squares of identical fabric, batting, backing fabric the same for all squares. Sew together and turn, sew around edge. Or you could sew with right sides out and pink the edges. Turn the squares so backing shows on a table or the floor and have kids try to turn over and match the pairs. Quick and easy use of scraps and fun for the little ones.

I saw a pattern (somewhere) for quilted heatproof holders to put your curling iron in. I know when we travel that is the last thing I pack and it's always hot, so thought this would be a great idea.

Pillows made like a patchwork quilt. Key chains. Lapel pins., bookmarks.

Simple fabric gift bags in assorted sizes. Great use for scraps that you might have.. lol!

pillowcases :)

Did anyone mention tissue box covers, for the "boutique" size tissue boxes? Many people like to keep a box of tissues, in the living room.

Small cosmetic bags

"Going to Grandma's" bags for kids (large enough for a change of clothes and stuffed animal)

mlt150 09-12-2013 06:29 AM

Google microwave bowl holders. I am going to make them with 10 inch squares so very inexpensive and quick to make.

.......... which made me think that market bags would be a good saleable item, stash and/or scrappy friendly and easy to make!

QuiltE 09-12-2013 08:42 AM

How about Ditty Bags??
You could do them in an assortment of sizes and fabric choices.

I made a box full of these and everyone sold for $1 each. People will buy something for $1 at a benefit sale. Cut a roll of the non slip drawer liner into squares. Sew a pretty fabric square to one side, turn. Instant jar lid grippy thing. I used 5" charm pack fabric squares I didn't have a use for.

ambquilter 09-12-2013 06:42 PM

The one thing I made that sold the fastest was baby doll rag quilts. The ladies in my homemakers group asked how much I thought they should price them. I told them about $10. They thought that was too much and priced them at $7. I made 3. The first person that walked up bought all 3 of them. :)

I made 30 of these last year for our boutique, and sold out in the first three hours! Hoping to get more done this year, but they are neither inexpensive nor quick to make in my opinion! I average 3-4 hours each, with custom quilting to go with the fabric, and even on sale batting adds up quickly since they take as much batting as fabric. One lady decided to make her own, and told me later she ended up paying more for materials than I was charging! Check on this Board for directions; that's where I learned how to make them. Hints: Cut the batting 3/4" smaller than the fabric square (I make mine 9-1/2", batting 8-3/4") and school-glue the batting in place before quilting and making darts on each layer.

Putting fabrics in the microwave is not always safe. Those bowls and potato bags can catch on fire in the microwave.

Yes, that's true, but so can a bag of popcorn, which is sold all over. There has to be some responsibility on the part of the user to NOT put them in the 'wave for way too much time! Too much of a good thing usually turns out to be a bad thing.

BellaBoo 09-13-2013 06:29 AM

The bowls are not for cooking but for heating up. No microwave shouldn't take more then 3 min. to heat soup. I sampled all kinds of batting in my microwave. Warm and Natural was the best of all I tried, it never got hot. Throw a piece of batting in the microwave and see if it is what you want to use.

I saw a "Quilt in a Jar" once. Thought it was a nice idea. She donor had cut the squares, drew a diagram, had instructions, had backing and batting cut, enough to make a pillow top. All stuffed into a large jar.

Hanging Kitchen Towels

I have given many of these and they are relatively inexpensive to make if you go to a Dollar Store to get towels and potholders. They are very quick to make.

Basic Instructions:
1. Fold potholder and towel in half.
2. Stitch the middle of the pot holder to middle of the towel.
3. Use the ring on the potholder to catch on a button you add to the bottom of the potholder.

Everyone can use more kitchen towel especially if they hang easily on the oven or knobs.

How about the ten minute tablerunner. Easy, fast and they turn out wonderful.

raksmum 09-13-2013 07:39 PM

Fat Quarter Scarf - 3 fat quarters that you like together. Cut all FQ's to the length of the shortest one. From each FQ cut two six inch strips. Make two sets of three strips sewing end to end and not having the fabrics in the same order. Right sides together sew the two sets together along the long edge of one side. On the long edge of the other side start 4-6" from the top and end 2-3" from the bottom. Turn right side out and press. Attach the two ends together (this will be easy using pins) and sew to make a large circle. Hand sew or use invisible thread to sew up the opening. Done! Place around your neck and then cross over and place around your neck again. Easy, peasy, 30 minute project!

I use the Warm Tater Batting made especially for microwaves without the scrim or resins.

IBQUILTIN 09-14-2013 08:00 AM

I just had my kitchen remodeled and noticed that my oven mits are a disgrace, and so are most of my pot holders. I have some I hang on the wall as deco, but kitchen stuff is sure on my list of gifts this year. Place Mats, table toppers, runners, oven mitts, and pot holders are always welcome gifts

OldHairTwister 09-14-2013 02:20 PM

When I make Tater Bags, I use 2 layers of flannel instead of batting. Been using mine for 5 or 6 years now with no problems.

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate all your ideas and info!

Do you have a hard time sewing through so many thicknesses?
