Ikea Quality?
 

I need some storage units, shelves, cabinets ect. I love our home, but it has no storage! We haven't been really able to unpack all our boxes after we moved last year and I'm sick of packing boxes in my living room. I would love to have them gone by Thanksgiving! (Rant over!:D)

I was looking at Ikea online and their products have affordable prices, but I'm wondering how is the quality. I don't want anything made from matchstickes. Has anyone here bought Ikea products and are you pleased with it? I would love to hear the good and the bad!

Very near me in Renton is the largest Ikea, it used to be the largest in the World but I don't know the current standards. Happens the DDiL works there too.

I've been getting things from Ikea since it opened and many of them are still with me. They are sturdy but most are not investment pieces and they often don't move well once assembled.

My corner desk is Ikea as are my CD cabinets, cabinets are at least 20 years old. I've had bookcases. I know I've had other things but none are jumping out at me right now. When I was looking at redoing my kitchen I was suitably impressed by their cabinets in style, cost, function, and materials. In parts of Europe kitchens are not built in as they typically are in the US but made with modular units.

Edit: For my sewing room storage I went with the metal rolling type racks from Costco. The closet in my sewing room is full of long term storage items (some of which are on the to-go list!) like sleeping bags and things and so there is no room for my fabric and I still have to periodically go into that closet. Unless you like the industrial look, Ikea furniture is a lot easier to tuck into a hallway or whatever.

I have been looking at their book cases. Check the inside depth of the shelves if you want to store fabric. I ruler fold so need to find ones where the shelves are at least 12 inches deep inside.

I may consider metal storage cabinets instead. There are some that have thin clear windows in them. Easy to see contents.

Most of the furniture in my home is from Ikea. My sewing room is almost all Ikea. (All adults in my home. My grandchildren live out of state.) I think it is durable and affordable for the most part. But, my DH and Son work for a moving company. Ikea furniture is not manufactured to be moved around a lot. Make sure you empty it out if you have to move it. Also, heed the warnings on Ikea furniture. Anchor it to the wall. Some of their pieces can be "tippy" and they have had accidents and deaths. I can tell you when you get the pieces all put together, they are solid.

We have some IKEA furniture we have assembled and are happy with it. No issues - and I have an IKEA kitchen which I love. We moved very close to an IKEA so I walk through it on a regular basis just to look.

I have some Ikea bookshelves I bought for the study of our last house. Then we moved and the study had built ins so I moved the bookcases to my sewing room. They look nice and have held up better than I expected them to. I've had mine over 20 years now, but they don't get hard usage.

We have recently gotten rid of some IKEA bookshelves that were worn out, that said they served us well. Homeschooling family, so those shelves were always completely stuffed full of heavy books. They were moved. I got 13 years of use out of them for less than $100. No complaints.

One of the Billy Bookcases survived......never loaded it as excessively. It was in my daughter’s bedroom.

It's good stuff and they have lots of great storage options. As IceBlossom said, the Ikea furniture is not investment pieces. But treated well, it will serve you well. Their stuff has clean modern lines. Most of it goes with anything. I have the black bookcases for my sewing supplies, and an Ikea couch I love. My daughter has an entire Ikea kitchen and it is wonderful.

I have two large Billy bookcases and they are stuffed (sometimes double shelved) with ,y regular reading books. and I can tell you the shelves are very sturdy, even with all that weight. The previous shelves were bowing before we got the ones from Ikea to replace the cheaper ones - which are now in the garage. My son has several pieces of furniture I bought him when he moved to Kirkland, WA after law school in 2009. The dining table and chairs are now jn Aurora, CO with wife, son and new daughter and are still in super condition. He also has a dresses and night stands. I love Ikea and get down to the one in Charlotte as often as I can. I’m looking at more bookshelves when I rearrange the master bedroom and I would not hesitate to buy anything from them.
