Those are love bugs.
They are annoying and when they start mating and flying around then it is worse. Then they die and stick to everything permantly. Down here in Alabama they start in early May. They are impossible to remove from your car when they die and stick to it. |
Ithink it is a Japanese Beetle, they like all kinds of new plants and veggies. Try putting a Dryer Softner Sheet in your pocket or tucked into your neckline. Works really well

Up in Michigan, the June bugs are HUGE and are out now...I agree with the person who said that they hit the window like a rock and just keep buzzing.
It also is not a stink bug...they do not have any red on them...brown instead and bigger. Glad they are in your area...we have plenty of other bugs up here to "bug us." |
I thought it was a lightening bug, but that's how much i know. And our june bugs are fat and brown.

Boy do they look yucky, something everyone wants flying around them. You must be like me, I'm a bug magnet, anywhere, anytime, any place. People liked to sit next to me at my son's baseball games because the bugs left them alone, because they were after me (guess I'm pretty sweet too). I've heard that the Off in the container you put around your waist works, but I don't have any personal experience with it. Good luck. My neighbor used to wear a hat with some type of screening, but I think that would be hot to wear. Hope you find something that works.

Who would have thought there were so many kinds of stink bugs. I was curious and went googling. Ours is actually a Pinacate Beetle, commonly called a "stink bug" or even called a "clown beetle".
|
If you continue to have trouble with them, contact your county cooperative extension office -- they are affiliated with one of your state's universities and have a ton of reference materials, especially in ag fields.

Box Elder Bug. Don't squash them, they'll smell.

I think this is what we call Lovebugs because they are always connected to a friend when they get bad. It is only certain times of the year we get them in Texas. I think more towards the fall. Will make an awful mess of your vehicle.
|
I wonder with whoever said it is a "love bug". That is what we have called "sex bugs". They fly around with their back ends stuck together. The only thing, the above mentioned bugs usually have more orange on them instead of the back part being all black.
Check with your county extension agent. S/he would probably know or have someone in the office that would. |
Definetly not a boxelder bug, we have lots of them around later in year and do not look anything like that.

It is always such a joy to read this board and if I ever need an answer to a question, I always come here.
Thanks so much for all the great answers... it is, indeed, a firefly, I found out... but not one that lights up. I will definitely try the downy dryer sheet, and will look for a spray bottle too. I looked at the OFF clips, but it only mentioned mosquitos. These guys wouldn't "bug" me so much... hehe... if they didn't fly around my face and head and land on me. I understand they won't be around after June, so I'm good. Another bug I hate??? EARWIGS!!!! Ewwwwwwww  gives me the shivers just to think of them. Does anyone else have a problem with them? They are all over the place around here! OMG... I could have nightmares about them! Anyway, thanks again for all your help! :D |
We usually have a lot of earwigs, but I think they may be slow this year because of all of the rain. Maybe they don't want to drown. lol
|
Box Elder bug definitely! They can be very annoying. Good news they don't bite. Bad news they swarm every 7 years. Our house would be covered till it was black. The live of course in Box Elder trees. If you find the tree you will find the source and the nest. They can be exterminated but they due lay dormant and can come back in later years. We had to have the whole tree removed. Good Luck.

Looks like what we call a potato bug to me. That is what we call them around here.
fatcat |
Bugs are attracted to bright colors and scents. When gardening avoid that. Invest in Bug-B-Gone. Easy to use, attach to garden hose and waters plants, grass and bushes as usual.

Come to Florida. I'll show you bugs!
