My uncle (who lives next door) has some chickens, and we can have all the fresh eggs we want.....they are the brown eggs and we love them! His chickens are in a coop, but I don't go in there if I don't have to because of the smell.....:rolleyes:

Coyotes roam ..I have dogs...Chickens attract coyotes...nuff said. I can buy eggs locally. It is great fir kids to experience egg gathering...

it's not my business but my opinion is that it's only big enough for one chicken, unless your having bantams then maybe two, but it is adorable. I have 16 and would like something cute, mine is just efficient.

Don't tell my husband...he's always talking about getting chickens. I'm afraid I would be the one that would end up taking care of them. LOL

Total chicken and egg envy.! I live where it is frowned upon. There are those who have chickens, I can hear them, but the town told me NO!
What kind of chickens are you getting? I was the 4-H chicken leader when the kids were little and we lived on a farm. I still like Transylvania Naked Necks. They are so ugly. But they live to be very old...maybe up to 10 and still lay. Check Murry McMurry for odd breeds. Another name for them is Turken, but they are not turkeys. Marcia |

This seems to be a fad right now but I remember that chicken "excrement" is not a good smell. Fresh eggs are wonderful but that "excrement" also needs to be washed off of some of them. Some hens become protective and know how to peck a person--ouch! And nothing excites a person any more than reaching into a nest only to find a snake has decided eggs taste good. There are lots of predators that like chickens, too. Some folks are allergic to the feathers. Remember they sell eggs already cleaned and in a box at the grocery store--and right now they almost give them away in our area. I'll get mine there!

I lived in town, but a neighbor was annexed into the city limits with his 30 or 40 acreage farm. All the kids learned to gather eggs (even under the hens), milk the cows, and slop the pigs. We got fresh milk and eggs delivered to our doors by him. For helping him we got to ride the horse. I miss those fresh eggs and milk.

I have mixed feelings about having chickens....more work. But I do buy fresh eggs from local during the summer. Talking to one, learned that the chickens are good layers for only about 4 yrs....then, well you know........
