I'm Getting A Little Chicken Coop!!!

Howdy y'all ☺

I'm going tomorrow to pick up my new (to me) chicken coop! I live in town where you can't have more than 6 hens, so this one is plenty big enough, since I plan on having no more than 3 or 4. I won't be putting chickens in it until spring, but that gives me ample time to get everything set up and buy the rest of the equipment I'll need. I'm SOOOOO excited!!! And yes...I'm well aware that that's a funny looking chicken that's in there now. LOL! 😀

Congratulations! I'm so excited for you. Last winter my son built a chicken coop. He attached it to an already existing shed. I am posting photos. The barn like structure is the original shed and you can see the attached chicken coop. He also built a fence so that the chickens could roam. He uses solar power in the coop. There is a heat lamp and he maintains the temperature. I forget what he maintains the temperature at, but they live in Maine, and his chickens stay warm enough. The pet carrier he uses for when chicks are hatched, to protect them from the larger chickens. He lives on the outskirts of town, and there are ordinances such as the one that you have to follow. I can't remember how many he is allowed, but I think it is 6 or 8. They have more eggs than they know what to do with. He gives away hatch-lings, but he also has intentions of eating some of the chickens.

I took my grandson to visit his uncle this summer, and in the photos, he is "helping" to gather eggs for breakfast. In the pet carrier, there are hatch-lings, and my grandson was fascinated to see the little chicks. My son is also a gardener, and he loves that he now has free fertilizer. There is a plaque at the entrance to the coop that reads: "I dream of a world where chickens can cross the road without their motives being questioned." Some of the chickens in the photo are Attila the Hen, MisterE or Miss turry (they couldn't figure out the sex when they named him), and Mary Poopins. If you google chicken names, there are some really cute ones, like Chick Norris for example. The eggs in the photo were from Bantam Hens. My son brought them for our Christmas breakfast. Keep us posted on your progress this spring.

I meant to mention that the chicken coop was built completely using recycled materials.

So many people like chickens, but not me! I grew up on a farm where they roamed free. Going barefoot in the summer was not pleasant when stepping on the droppings! I want nothing further to do with chickens, and at age 70 I don't expect to.

while my son (whose 29) was in high school he kept hens as part of his FFA project. After he went to college I got stuck with keeping track of them and they were not laying as much, so when he got home for Christmas, we liberated them at the state fishing lake park! since their wings not clipped, figured they at least had a chance to get into a tree if the coyotes or hawks didn't get them first! Will say chicken "sh#!" makes good addition to the compost pile! But don't miss them (think the dogs and our resident coyotes do though)

I am so jealous... If I could start over again I would live somewhere where I could have some chickens...... fresh eggs are so good.
