I'm making mug rugs, and love it. However, when I give them, people study them for a minute and then ask if it is a really small placemat! So, I'm thinking..."dammit dolls" have a little peom explaining their usefulness, so why not Mug Rugs...does anyone know of such a thing? (If not, maybe we should all pool our smarts and come up with one!)

Carol's Quilts 06-22-2011 01:05 PM

Just off the top of my head:

Hope you enjoy this little rug.
It's meant to fit a cup or a mug.
So when you're having your coffe or tea,
I hope you'll smile and think of me.

Ramona Byrd 06-22-2011 01:06 PM

Really, before joining this forum, I had never heard of a Mug Rug either!! Has anyone else?
Place mats, yes, Mug Rugs no, even though it's a good idea, especially since I have a glass table.

jillnjo 06-22-2011 01:08 PM

No, I had never heard of a mug rug, either! But I like them and the little poem Carol wrote sounds good to me.

QuiltnCowgirl 06-22-2011 01:12 PM

I gave mug rugs as individual gifts at a ladies luncheon I hosted on May. Yup - everyone looked at them like "Huh?". Even though I placed them on the beverage table & had a beverage glass sitting on each one. I tried explaining what they were & kept getting the Huh? look - so I finally said they were coasters on steroids. Huh? to Aha! in seconds. So much for class & finesse.

They might understand 'washable coaster'.
Mug Rug is much nicer than a folded washcloth.

Great poem!

Kaz 06-22-2011 02:30 PM

I love this! I've never made a mug rug and really never wanted to but now I want to make some just to use this poem! Thanks for adding to my to do list!

Carol's Quilts, You are a genius!!!
I love the poem, and will give credit where it is due...I'll include a little "cq" at the end whenever I give it with a mug rug! Thank you!!
For those that haven't tried making these little gifts, DO!!! They are fun, quick, and always appreciated. I make mine using leftover or orphan blocks, or to try out a new pattern. Then I match them with an inexpensive mug...Instant Gift!

TanyaL 06-23-2011 03:46 AM

I have a question: why is the mug rug larger than a coaster? They don't seem to be large enough for a mug and a desert plate.

I first heard of them from my weaver sister--she made quite a few for her weaving shop back in the early 90's. I think the woven ones preceded the quilted ones, but am not sure.

rannyof3 06-23-2011 05:30 AM

Here is what I use:
A place for coffee, water, pop or tea
Whenever you use it, think of me.
Extra room for a little treat
Be it fruit or veggies or something sweet.

tlcquiltnut 06-23-2011 05:34 AM

Is a mug hug

I have been in Mug Rug swaps, it is fun to recieve them and make them.

I too had not heard of a rug mug. I am still out on whether they are a good idea or not LOL, other than for pracice sewing quilts. Take care.

I wish I could come up with poems like this. My talents lie elsewhere. Would you mind if we used this little poem?

Evie 06-23-2011 07:57 AM

I made plastic canvas coasters years ago with the words "mug rug" stitched into the pattern. Still have a few of them which I use at Christmas time because they're made with red and green yarns.

Joyce Ann 06-23-2011 11:08 AM

Very cute

How about room for a cookie!?

Carol's Quilts 06-23-2011 12:21 PM

Thank you, everyone, for all your compliments. I certainly never expected the kind of response this little poem has generated. It's made me feel a little special and I am so appreciative.

Yes, you may use it if you like.

Thanks again,
Carol

cr12cats 06-23-2011 01:31 PM

thank you Carol that is so perfect
I like to give credits where it belongs So here your ditty will be signed Carol Q
You are definitely a talented person
I used to write poems and stories but they all got lost but 2. My parents didn't permit it and the notebook had to be kept at a freinds house and she was kicked out on her 18th birthday and never saw the notebook again.
I only have 2 left.I thought both would be out dated but one can be used today with the wars going on again unfortunily,

Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm sorry to hear you had such misfortune with your poems. Why don't you post them on this board? I'd love to read them and I'm sure others would, too.
