Tell me the snake was in Texas. I may never go to a yard sale again. I would die on the spot if I found myself in a car with a snake, it wouldn't have to bite me.

lillybeck 08-26-2011 03:43 AM

Bed bugs like head lice should not make anyone be treated badly. Head llice do not come from dirtiness and neither do bed bugs. There has been an epidemic of both in the world lately and all you can do is clean up the mess and go on.
Anyone who iis treating your sister badly because of this should be ashamed of themselves. I know of very well off people that have had to deal with both of these issues and sad to say these things are part of life. I will pray for you sister to get her home restored and be safe and secure.

quiltymom 08-26-2011 03:44 AM

I watched on TV about bed bugs in motels. I won't stay in them because of that reason !!! Big warm hugs to your sister.

Sharon-OH 08-26-2011 04:15 AM

So very sorry to hear about your sis. Bed bugs are awful creatures. I worked in a hardware store and we could not keep the bed bug spray products in stock. They are expensive and not sure if they really worked. We were told that the bugs can hibernate up to 18 months. Heard too many stories of customers having to get rid of everything. A lot of antique furniture. It isn't your sister fault at all. You can get bed bugs from any where, your doctors office, the grocery store, rental cars, just any where people are. We also sold a lot of hand steamers so people could steam items that could not fit into the dryer. Please give your sis a big hug, things will get better.

My friend purchased a bedroom set at a nice furniture store and a couple of days later she noticed bugs on the frame. It had bugs in the wood and was from China. They came and got the furniture and offered her a receipt to purchase something else but would not return her money. Check everything before you take it into your home. She may want to have her birds checked to be sure that they are not carring the eggs and will have a return of the bugs.
This is so sad but when we get delivery we have to check everything even the bags from the grocery store for other bugs. There are not enough restrictions on imports.

I am so sorry that this happened to your sister. Your information may save someone from the expensive problem I saw a news program the cost of getting rid of beg bugs depending on where you live thousands of dollars. They suggested when you buy new clothes to go directly to the washing machine. I get so nervous when we go to a motel and come home . I have the Today show on now and the topic is College/bed bugs.
Thanks for reminding us of this problem.

doll-lady 08-26-2011 04:24 AM

i read in our newspaper a while back that you can even bring them in on new clothes from the mall, that some of the stores have the same problems.

Please tell your sister that bed bugs knows no class of people and they are everywhere now. If you watch the news about bed bugs, you get scared to even go to the grocery store anymore. I wish there was something I could do to help her.

Hi everyone, Although I dont post, I read your shares every day and learn much!! Now, onto this post, bedbugs HAVE to be treated with heat from a dryer. We had an expert come out, to our apt. building and give a talk on how to prevent and get rid of the bugs. He said to throw anything you buy, new or not, in the dryer for 15 mins. Doesnt have to be washed. As for furniture that is infested, it should be plastic wrapped and taped and marked as infested so that others wont take it. You can check yourself, for bugs, by using a LCD flashlight, along seams, door frames, etc. Also, look online for guidelines on getting rid of these pests. Fumigation was not recommended, as it doesnt reach all the places they hide. Spraying with certain chemicals is what is used, as well as a powder that goes in electrical outlets. Sounds like fun huh? yuk I hate bugs period.

hikingquilter 08-26-2011 04:36 AM

You are NOT being a wet blanket. This is good information and a warning for all. It is not a good idea to purchase used upholstered furniture from anywhere. And if you buy dressers and such, be sure to clean and fumigate them before bringing them into your home.

Annaquilts 08-26-2011 04:39 AM

Aaaaahh what a sad story. Prayers said for her. It can happen to everyone. We one time all got head lice. I didn't even know what it was as I had never had it. Thanks for the warning. I will take it to heart.

grumpy90650 08-26-2011 04:43 AM

how sad, she is in my prayers!!

ree-nee 08-26-2011 04:54 AM

Hugs to you all! I am glad she has you to be "there".

ChildoftheUniverse 08-26-2011 05:14 AM

A gentle hug for your sister and for you... and prayers. Scary thought and great warning. Thanks.

michelehuston 08-26-2011 05:16 AM

What good advice!! Hope your sister feels better..it is not her fault that she bought a great looking chair! I for one am not sure that I would have thought of getting bedbugs from a great thrift find. So sorry she is going through this!!!

kittycats 08-26-2011 05:28 AM

Sorry to hear, we had recently moved into a house and found out it was infested with bed bugs, had to get rid of 2 chairs and a bed. We are now in the process of getting rid of them. Have never had anything like this before and I am almost 64!

Steady Stiching 08-26-2011 05:31 AM

Very sound advice....great topic.....I have become very careful buying soft (anything with fabric) merchandise.
If I cant fit it in my washer and dryer I dont' buy it. It stays in the trunk in a tightly sealed plastic bag until I'm ready to wash it.

kaykwilts 08-26-2011 05:40 AM

This is terrible....tell you sis to hang in there...so sorry this happened. But thanks for sharing her story...I will think twice about purchasing used furniture from now on!!

GrammaBabs 08-26-2011 05:43 AM

WOW..........what an outpouring of good thoughts for my sis.... you are all so wonderful... it has helped.... she has been in touch with a group in her area. she qualifies for help... (and trust me, if you knew her there would be no question)... she's the kind that has stayed in touch with some of the people she used to care for when she was able to work.... ie.. a 91yr. old... takes her out shopping and for b-days when she can... visits to nursing homes.. people where she lives..helping and shopping... the list goes on....
Anywhoooooo, they will be sending her a check for a mattress by Saturday we hope,,,, not going to be the electric bed she had, but we are grateful... and to all of YOU... i appreciate your wonderful support... thanks and hugs, Barbara

caspharm 08-26-2011 05:59 AM

Thanks for the warning! Hope things get better for her.

Cassews 08-26-2011 06:12 AM

that is so terrible people are treating her different, its not her fault at all. Give her a hug from us to her ..

hoppa 08-26-2011 06:24 AM

So sorry to hear this. I always wash fabric when I buy it.

mojo11 08-26-2011 06:28 AM

How horrible for her. My thoughts are with her and family. Hugs.

dcamarote 08-26-2011 06:54 AM

thanks so much for the info. I have bought used furniture that is upholstered and never thought about this. Horrible that she has to go through this.

gramajo 08-26-2011 07:09 AM

Hugs for your sister.

My son had a similar thing happen. They bought a used childrens bedroom set from Craigslist that apparently had been infested. They had two estimates for over $5000.00 to get rid of them because of the multiple trips that would have to be made and the extensive measures they have to go to. They brought in dogs trained to sniff them out. They couldn't afford to have it professionally treated so he went to one of the places that mix the insecticide up for you and you have to spray it yourself. He was told to take the covers off the electrical outlets and wall plates, turn off the main house power, and spray behind the walls as far as he could reach because they will infest into the wall cavities. They took all the furniture outside and put it under black tarps in the summer sun in Phoenix, AZ so that should have killed the little buggars. Shortly after that the bank forclosed on their house and he said the only good thing about it was that they would finally be free of the bugs. They left all of their old furniture on the curb and he cut it all to shreds and put a big sign on it so no one would take it. Ann in TN

My one neighbor sent her daughter off to college last Aug. In mid Sept just a few weeks later her daughter & her two room mates had to be moved to a hotel and weren't allowed to take anything with them, not even there books or computers. They also had bedbug infestation. The whole apartment building had to be fumigated. Two of the girls were from out of state with no family around to help them. The school finely after several weeks moved them into a new apartment building and when they got thier stuff back from the cleaning company everything was pink. It all was ruined and had to be replaced! The insurance company that they had renters insurance with wanted receipts for everything they had. Who keeps receipts for all thier purchases that long! Who can afford to replace everything they own all at once to produce new receipts for reimbursment also!

Makes you very skeptical about taking anything used, but I have brought home brand new food items from stores that had bugs in it lots of time! Now I put dry goods into air tight containers such as crackers, noodles, flour, sugar, cereal, etc because it doesn't take but 1 infested box to ruin everything else in your pantry!

My heart goes out to your family members!

Quiltinelaine 08-26-2011 07:46 AM

AWWW GrammaBabs so sorry to hear about this problem for your sis. U know I have thought about shopping at these diff places and wonder who had this stuff before me and if they were clean:::I also, wonder if Goodwill, etc.does anything to these donations to clean when they get them. Do they spray something???? Give your sister Big HUGGZZZ and tell her THINGS WILL GET BETTER. She and her family r in my prayers.::::

missbelle 08-26-2011 07:53 AM

If you have an Extension Service which is a dept. under the
USDA, in our area there is a Office in Each County listed as
(co. name) Extension Service they should be able to give
you info. on how to eradicate "bed bugs." We used to have
bed bugs years ago (not in the wooden furniture) in the creases of old matteress with the roll around the upper and
lower sides and buttons in the middle. After two or three sprayings with the old hand pump sprayers used for wasps.etc. we got rid of them. I am sure that by now they have something they could recommend to be used.
Just a suggestion. missbelle

kathome 08-26-2011 08:47 AM

I hate to be the bad guy here, but here goes.........

I am very afraid of my home being infested by ANY bug that would cost thousands of dollars to get rid of. I don't purchase ANYTHING at the Goodwill type stores for just this reason. When I stay at a hotel I always carefully check everything to make sure there are no bed bugs lurking. I'm not a nut, and I'm not paranoid. If my home had one of these infestations, I simply could not afford the cost of the extermination. I WOULD LOOSE MY HOME.

Now........ a story............. I was at an outdoor event and a really nice lady came and sat down beside me and we chatted for quite a while. Then she tells me that her house has an extreme infestation of bed bugs. I waited a short period of time and then thought of a reason to discontinue my conversation with her and moved away. I'm not a nasty person, but those little buggers were no doubt on her clothes and heaven forbid I bring them home.

I don't want to be rude to ANYONE, and I feel terrible for this nice lady who does not deserve to have this problem. However, I also can't put my empathy for her problems above the possibility of sacrificing my home.

ncredbird 08-26-2011 09:42 AM

Just for information the exterminator told my son that they lay their eggs anywhere - in the cracks of the wood in the furniture such as the bed frames, frames of the sofas, behind the baseboards - any crack they can find. Simply disposing of the upholstered furniture or the mattress will not take care of the problem. Ann in TN

Lucy90 08-26-2011 11:02 AM

Wish I lived closer and could help out by getting her a new chair & bed. It isn't her fault and it will get better for her. She has faith and that helps. Tell her everyone on this board is sending her hugs and prayers for things to get better.

kwilter 08-26-2011 11:16 AM

Steam escapes from boiling water at 212 degrees F. Do those steam cleaners work on furniture?

snicktrain 08-26-2011 11:46 AM

Prayers and hugs go to her. Maybe someone that she has helped in the past will put on their big girl panties and step up. ;)

Annaleehunter 08-26-2011 11:50 AM

Wish she was here. I have a set of nice double mattresses that are bug free! I recently purchased a piece of used furniture and set it on the front porch. Between the heat and spraying with lysol twice daily nothing had a chance to make it inside! I buy lots of men's shirts from goodwill, even buy flannel sheets for batting, all go into the wash immediately. Wish your sister well; invite her to be here! Thanks!

virgwid 08-26-2011 12:03 PM

Thank you for the warning!! I never thought about the furniture. Virg

serenitybygrace 08-26-2011 12:20 PM

My daughter somehow got bedbugs in her house. Wow!! It was amazing how many times the exterminator had to go to her house. My daughter and her husband had to vacuum everything, take the bed apart and vacuum every part every day. My daughter was allergic to their bites and swelled up every place they bit her. It was terrible.
We saw on the web that Cedarcide would kill bedbugs. She ordered some and sprayed that stuff all around. She said she had every window open and every fan on.
I really try to be careful about anything I bring into the house. I pray that I never get them. Smells bother me and sometimes I get migraines if I am exposed.
Teachers can tell you that if any student gets headlice, it can spread to the whole class. Their coats/hats etc. are all hung on one wall - the lice hop from one coat to another in order to find the warmest spot. They have to put every child's coat/hat etc. in a garbage bag and tie it us so bubs can't get in or out. The rest of us seem to itch and scratch just thinking about it.

dixiebelle162002 08-26-2011 01:35 PM

That is so horrible. I feel so badly for her and I can only imagine what a horrible time she is having. Thank you for the information.

eimay 08-26-2011 03:13 PM

Excellent advice. Bedbugs are in epidemic proportions in the U.S. It typically has to do with the amount of travel that takes place. Bedbugs hitchhike. There was a special about them on History International called Bedbug Armegeddon. Very informative. We now spray down (with alcohol)after going to the movies, since this was named as a place that is often contaminated.

sassey 08-26-2011 03:18 PM

Sorry about your sister. I am counting my blessings that that hasn't happened to me, Her story will make me more discrete in purchasing used furniture in the future. Hugs to your sister
