So sorry to hear this has
happened to your dear sister. I hope things get bettet for her soon. Hugs to her, Sharon |
My heart goes out to your sister, it's a shame this had to happen. I really thought bed bugs were a thing of the past, but not so. The newspaper had articles about apartments being infested, and one hotel that served as a very low cost place for people to stay for short periods of time had to toss their bedding and fumigate the entire building. There was even a warning that if an infested mattress is taken down a stairway that they could hop off for "higher ground" so to speak. My Mother never let my Dad know about the first hotel they were to spend their "honeymoon night" and it had bedbugs, and my Mom refused to sleep there. Can't blame her. Guess that's one way to delay wedding night jitters. She was 19 when she married my Dad and the only man she dated because her father was so strict he wouldn't let her date anyone else. They were together almost 43 years until her heart gave out. They were a good model growing up of what a marriage can be. Thank you for the warning, it never pays to be too careful, especially today.

My reason being........... my SIS... who has gotten some fantastic fabric and other items this way.... purchased a beautiful, not too used looking chair at a very nice consignment shop... after a few months... she found "bed type bugs".... she has had to have a total fummigation TWICE... this was a ton of work for someone with a disability... next week they are going to "HEAT" her house to about 160degrees, to be sure they are gone....this means finding a place for her birds to go as well..... This has been a nightmare... they took her bed (they had gotten into the frame)and cut up and disposed of her chair that she loved.... they came in via. the chair...She's been told they like to hid in the folds of fabrics and are horrible to get rid of once they enter your home...I Love seeing all the great bargins of fabric and figure that lots of "our children" (mine will be some)... are left with the collections of their parents... and we never know just where this stuff was kept or how long it was around.... so... Just be careful,,, the washing is a given, i'm sure, but the "hot" drying, might be a good idea... regardless of the shrinkage issue.... hope this is taken as a helpful suggestion.... My Sis is without a bed and chair until she can afford one...we "skyped" last night and she was crying and saying she's never had much, but she never really felt as poor and ashamed as she does now... people are even treating her differently.. she is a person that does so much for others and it's so unfair ...............
Bed bugs live for six months without feeding. They can be frozen or heated out, but it is not usually similar to spraying for bugs. They do like to hide in folds, and often are found at the top of the mattress because they like the humidity of your head lying there. So they are on the wall above your head and drop in. From what I've read it takes at least five days of constant heat or freeze. I am trying to remember where I saw a recent article about this issue, but cannot. I found this: http://www.ipmctoc.umn.edu/Traveller...ng_bedbugs.pdf Items that cannot be washed may be heated or frozen. Currently, research is being conducted to determine the most effective thermal conditions for killing bed bugs, while not damaging materials. However, based on related research, a two hour core exposure at 120oF (45oC) should be considered a minimum target temperature for heat treatments. For freezing, a minimum of 23oF (- 5oC) must be maintained for at least 5 days. As the temperature is decreased, the time of exposure is shortened. For instance, the articles could be “flash frozen” resulting in a very short time of exposure, but the target temperature should be -15oF ( -26oC) - the conditions required to instantly freeze the eggs. Keep in mind that most non-commercial freezers will have varying temperatures between 30oF and 20oF, and a 2 week freeze time is recommended if you are uncertain of the freezer temperatures. Just to re-iterate, if heating or freezing conditions are used, remember that these adverse conditions must reach the core of the articles being treated. |
my feelings exactly!! The poor dear - we're all praying for her

Anywhoooooo, they will be sending her a check for a mattress by Saturday we hope,,,, not going to be the electric bed she had, but we are grateful... and to all of YOU... i appreciate your wonderful support... thanks and hugs, Barbara |

Gees, your poor sister. I buy at yard sales and thrift stores too. That is terrible she's having to go through all of this. I hope things are taken care of soon.

If you can get Animal Planet channel, watch Bed Bug Apocolypse. It's very informative and by happenstance I just watched it last night and saw this post today.
DH is an exterminator. Exterminators are using heat a lot now (above 120F) to kill them. That program said heat is the bed bug's 'achilles heel.' A steamer can also help if you have one, but they can hide in appliances, computers, rugs, wood furniture, etc. A bed bug doesn't have to eat for a year and a half and will still survive. They are finding bed bugs in retail stores with NEW clothing, bedding, etc. now. Also, fire halls where fireman bring them back and sleep on their bunks in the fire house. Hope your sister doesn't have to spend too much to get rid of them, but the program said people have spent thousands to get rid of them. |
Thank You everyone!! You are so kind. Today is another day. I got up early to steam clean my rugs with my little shark, before the new bed comes from the Senior Center. I am so lucky to be in an area where they have done so much for me. I am sure the rest of my furnitre will be going. It's only 2 more recliners, but I will wait until after they bake the place. Thanks again, GrammaBabs sister

Welcome Sis.... aren't these people just wonderful........it's all gonna work out, we know that, but having such support really helps... thank you all again...hugs Barbara/GrammaBabs

She's since spent $2000 on trying to get rid of the bedbugs that came in with the set. Some deal.

I'm so sorry to read this Thanks for the information

I had never thought of getting bed bugs like that, what a shame your sister has to go thru this. Send her a hug.

btw if you travel, leave your suitcases outside in the sun for a week when you get home, and wash and dry everything in a hot.
It is pretty scary as bedbugs are not found in dept. stores, movie theaters, restaurants. Places you wouldn't think about, |
HOW SAD. MY DAUGHTER WORKS FOR A MANAGEMENT COMPANY AND THEY HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH FOREIGNERS BRINGING BUGS INTO THE COMPLEX AND INFESTING THE WHOLE BUILDING. TALK ABOUT A MESS. THEY TOO TAKE BOX CUTTERS TO BEDDING AND FURNITURE LEFT IN THE DUMPSTERS

Not just thrift/consignment/garage sale items -- a friend of mine found bedbugs in her cruise stateroom! They removed her mattress, etc. & brought in another one, but she couldn't relax in it either, worrying about if they'd infested everything she'd brought on the cruise.

Yuck :-(. I got bit by something over the weekend (I think @ my nephew's soccer game), but you had me closely examining my sheets last night.
|
It is like head lice. It knows no ecomonic bearers. I always thought dirty nasty people got it but hasn't got anything to do with it. You can pick it up anywhere.

MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO ALL YOU FOLKS THAT LIVE IN THE FLOODED AREAS. EVERYTHING RUINED. OH MY. WHAT TO
DO. HANG IN THERE. BETTER DAYS ARE COMING. AND TO THINK MY MOM WAS IRENE. FLO IN NNY |
That's so awful for her and how could she know that bed bugs were in her chair. Even in the libraires they have themand you can come home with them on you or in a book or whatever. You never know when you might encounter them. So she should hold her head up high she didn't do anything wrong. I feel for her it's always the way people look down on you. Wait until they have their turn with something. Good Luck to her. Sue

Thank you for your comment. When I had posted my issue with them after we moved into this place a person on here commented that some not so clean person had brought them to the office. It made me feel really bad. We are not dirty people at my house. The bugs were here when we moved in. I never replied to the person that made the comment. Guess I should have, but felt so bad that I didn't. Although I am sure they meant well.

I live in Fl. and it seems there is either a palmetto bug or sugar ants walking by and it drives me crazy because I think when I see a bug in the house it means the house is dirty and I know better than that. My husband says we live in Fl. what do you expect. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about anything. Sometimes someone can say something and not mean it the way it comes out but you still feel bad. Stay well. Sue

Thank you so much for the warning. My DD just bought some leather furniture off CL, it's been sitting in my garage for about 3 weeks waiting for her move. Never once thought of bed bugs. Hopefully all is well!
|
The way they talk about it on TV it seems to be everywhere and I just saw that a hotel chain was getting bed bug insurance for the problem. Maybe because people travel so much today I guess they can be anywhere. Good Luck. Sue

this is SO sad,we are getting these wretches here too.
