I got my kindle for Christmas (the basic one, no color) and really love it. It is easy to hold in one hand if you are laying in bed! It is easy to use, download, etc. Battery seems to last a long time. I have been paring down my shelves and plan to buy more books online to declutter the house a bit. Also, my local library will soon have the ability to loan me books on kindle. I can hardly wait!
|
Best Buy has both the Kindle and the Nook. You can look through the "store" in your "books" app to see books. It will list which are free and how much you have to pay for books that are not free. I also have lots of free games for my grandkids when they come over.

Love my Fire!
My DH and I received a Kindle Fire for Christmas from our kids, and at first I thought I wouldn't use it much for reading. Boy, was I WRONG!!! After playing around with it over the holidays I realized how much more than reading can be done on this little device. It's wonderful! I don't have a laptop or an Ipad, so this Kindle Fire is the next best thing! It's small and easy to tuck into my purse, but still has a larger screen than a smart phone (which I also do NOT own). I can do anything on it except make phone calls and take pictures. I spend endless hours reading the books from our library, or the free Amazon books that are available. I surf the internet, watch videos, play games, and most of all check my email and read this board! This fall my DH can even check the stats on his Fantasy Football (Yes, there's a free ap for that!) without running upstairs to check on our desktop computer.
If you can afford it, I would recommend you spend the extra money and get the Kindle Fire, since it's so much more than a book reading device. |
I received a Kobo Vox for my retirement present. I love it now that I have most of the quirks worked out. You can play games, surf the net, down load tons of apps, watch movies, Oh and I can read books.
|
I have a Nook, and I love it. But I did my homework because I'm avid reader. 76 books last year), and I wondered about back-lit versus e-ink regarding eye problems. I found out that avid readers should use the e-ink version, as it is like a book; whereas back-lit books should only be used if you don't read as intensely as it would be just like using a computer screen which is hard on your eyes. Also, back-lit books can't seen outside. To use an E-ink reader at night, as in bed, you must use a book light.
P.S. Kindles, Nooks, etc. are great for travel! I no linger carry seven books with me. |
I have the Nook Color and the Kindle, Amazon downloads in a few seconds but BN takes almost a 30 minutes to download some. Try Kindle Nations for free also.
|
The Nook was the first to hook to ALL libraries. Kindle only does certain ones. Two of my locals do not allow Kindle. Please check with your local libraries first.
|
Love, love, love my Kindle. Did I say love??? Yup. I've read so much more due to the convenience and also there are many free books out there. Download takes seconds, and if the free book (many by unknown authors) isn't to my liking I can just delete. My Kindle is not the fire.... just a plain simple one. That's all I need. For me a Kindle is to read books, not watch a movie.... IMHO...

I have the "basic" cheapest version of the Kindle and I wouldn't give it up. I read a lot and found I was running out of shelves for "real books". I don't plan to upgrade; I'm afraid I'd spend too much time on the internet. I just like to read books on mine or play some of the free games.
Here's a great site to get free Kindle books (someone on here posted it before). They send you an email each day with 6-10 free books that you then order from Kindle store on your Kindle. www.pixelofink.com |
I have the Kindle touchscreen. I got it in 3G and it has WiFi also. I really like it! The main disadvantage is that it's in black and white rather than color but that's ok for reading. You won't need the 3G if you have a network at home to pick up WiFi. I like the touchscreen but 3 members of my family have the navigation key one for $79 and they love them. The touchscreen is useful if you will be playing games on it.

My DH got me a Kindle Touch. He has the Fire and basic Kindle and gets nice special offers on it that I can get as well since they are all on one account. I also have an iPad and iPhone 4 that I use the Kindle app on. I get the free books and others off Amazon and can go back and forth between the phone and ipad reading the same book since they sync to each other. I love all of them!

I have the cheapest Kindle, one of the most expensive desk top computers, and a brand new Ipod. They all do things unique and have plus values that the others do not. I love the Kindle for the ease of putting in my purse and reading while I am waiting at the doctor's and in bed.
I always have at least 10 books waiting to be read and am considering getting my favorite Bible for devotions. I didn't want to pay more because I didn't want to do more on it. My games are played on the desk or the Ipad. I don't want to email on it. I don't want to shop on it. I only want to read. For that it is perfect. |
I have a Kindle Fire. I LOVE it! I can get to youtube for tutorials while at my sewing machine. I have tons of books that I have downloaded from amazon and can syc from my Fire to my laptop to my Android x so that I am never without a book to read.
|
The $79 Kindles are great for families to have several and just swap Kindles to read other's books. It won't be long when schools will go to digital books. It will save them thousands of dollars and the books can be instantly updated not having to wait years to get new ones.
|
My daughter bought me the 3G kindle and I love it. I actually got a two in one gift because my brother then put me on his account so I could read his books too. He is an avid reader and has always bought his books (I use the library) and we now have 115 books in the kindle. I think I have only bought four but have downloaded free ones. It is wonderful for travel which I am sure is why my daughter bought it for me. I showed up at her house with my suitcase packed with books. :)
|
So, please, for all of you out there who have the Kindle Fire, please can you compare it with the old Kindles that used the e-ink? The screen is so easy to read that I hesitate to switch to a Fire. Especially in the sun.
|
I love my Kindle! It is the 3g one. I love the fact that you can carry lots of books around at one time (just in case you finish one while you are at the doctor or waiting somewhere).
|
i got a Kindle for Christmas and i love it, i joined the prime club at Amazon and that makes it so much easier to get free reading and games
|
DH bought me the Kindle touch -- did not think I would like it and now I am buying far too many book (I try to buy $3.99 or less) and it is great fun. In order to limit myself, I buy the Amazon gift cards at the local safeway and use them to buy books -- that way I don't run up a big charge bill.
In addition to books, I have a couple of addictive, free games. |
Kindle is a great way to go if you only want to purchase books from Amazon. You cannot purchas from Barns and Noble though.
|
I've had my Kindle with 3G for several years and absolutely love it. I love the text to speech feature which allows me to continue "reading" my story while my eyes are otherwise occupied although it's a monotone computer voice that sometimes mangles words.
|
I have the Kindle Fire and LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I use it to read, check mail, the weather, etc. I have some cute freebie apps for my littles on there too, which helps while in a waiting room at the dentist, or orthodontist's. I can take it with me to the gym and read while working out on the tread mill, elliptical, or recumbant bike. It stands sturdily (is that a word) and doesn't flip pages or slip down while I'm doing my workout.
What I don't like is typing/texting on it. I can't text at all! Typing I can do just fine, if you don't count my typos. :P |
I have down loaded acouple of free books from Barns and Noble and then went to the intetnet web site and had it changed to Kindle format works great............................ I do have the Nook app on my computer to down load the books to first.
|
I have had a Kindle for several years now. I love it. My books were taking over my sewing room so I gave them to the church. I have a bad shoulder and reading large heavy books was starting to hurt. This Kindle has solved that problem. My daughter lives on the east coast and I live in Oregon. The Kindle is perfect for traveling. I am thinking of getting the Kindle Fire so I can have something to send emails and see the Quilting Board while away from home.

I never thought I would like a Kindle, as I am an audiobook user. However, I am seriously thinking about a Kindle Fire, due to its laptop capabilities. I am starting to travel some, and its compact size looks attractive compared to my laptop. I would mainly like it for emails as I am traveling. I'm open to comments if my thinking is faulty?????? m

No but you can get books cheaper and even free on Kindle Nation.com and pixelofink.com Nook can only download from BN. Kindle from amazon. I Have both and like the kindle best.

I just got mine about a month ago. I use it for downloads from the public library. Not going to pay more for a book than I would have to at half-price. I would like for them to get more craft books on line, then I will be totally happy.

I love my entry-level Kindle I got for C'mas, it is great to slide into my purse and have whenever I find a few minutes to spare. The websites someone posted recently, www/pixelofink.com and www.inspiredreads.com send an email every day with free downloads. I love my Kindle and the websites have become quite addictive.
|
I have the basic $139 Kindle and love it. There are thousands of free books and even more $1.00 books that change daily. It's easy to use and you can borrow from your local library for a week or two instead of driving there only to be told your book is out. I also love the ability to have it read for me as I go about my daily chores. My son bought the light cover for me so I won't disturb my hubby while reading at night.
|
I love my Kindle. I had reached a point where I didn't have room for all the books I have and they sure don't sell at garage sales. Books are not cheap but I found that on Kindle there are plenty of books at the 99 cent to $5 level and sometimes they even have some for free. I just have the basic Kindle, but am very happy with it because I'm a very avid reader. For me, TV just doesn't cut the mustard. Too much junk, sex, violence, etc. and not enough quality shows. Also, with Kindle, you can just close it down and pick up where you left off whenever you are ready to continue.

Some libraries have free downloads on current e-books, but they are allotted a limited number of downloads at a time, and you have to wait your turn as with any printed book that is in high demand. This seems weird to me, but the publishers would be crazy to allow unlimited free downloads on new books. I think a Kindle would be neat to have, but I have mixed feelings. I usually buy used books from our Friends of the Library store, which is a huge fund-raiser for the library. All the books they sell are donated, and the workers are volunteers, so the few dollars I spend on a book all go to the library. If people quit buying books this source will dry up. For people who can afford Kindles and such, the library may not be all that important these days, but there are many students and other readers for whom it might create a hardship not to have a thriving library system. Also, I dislike the fact that when you buy a Kindle book, it's not really yours in the same sense as a paper and ink book, and you can't pass it along to a friend.

We purchased a Kindle Fire just b4 Christmas and my dh and I both love it. I download free books all the time. He loves to play games on it. We considered the cheaper one, but we are both pleased with the one we purchased. It was $199 and the price has remained the same. If you have a friend with a kindle, or nook or even a computer that has kindle downloaded on it you can loan books to a friend..

My Kindle Keyboard 3G/Wireless just arrived from Amazon on March 24[SUP]th[/SUP]. It was listed as $139 and with tax would have been $150. I signed up for the offered Amazon Credit Card and received a $50 gift certificate, making my total $100. If I am not mistaken when Kindles first came on the scene weren’t they $400?
There is so much to learn but it has been very easy to get started. I can tell I am going to love it. This page on Amazon is very helpful for new Kindle owners. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_1_12/185-3468621-5473318?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-text&field-keywords=kindle+store&sprefix=kindle+store%2Caps%2 C397 :) |
One more thing I love about the Fire...I can listen to Pandora or IHeart radio at the same time that I am reading! I also listen while I'm quilting...so much fun!
|
I was given a Nook Tablet (16g) for Valentine's Day, and I'm surprised how much I love it. B&N has quite a lot of FREE books as well as book prices from 50¢ and up, and of course through your library there are thousands of e-books available to borrow. I never thought I'd like a e-book reader but it does make traveling so much easier. In my group of bookaholic friends, I was the only one who was still traveling with a tote bag chock full of books.... now I can just carry my 1-lb tablet stocked with a dozens of books for reading.
|
I have the plain Jane Kindle. It does nothing but let me read books. I absolutely love it. Don't get me wrong, I still love the touch, feel, and smell of a good book and I read them at home. But when I'm out - Dr's ofs etc. it is always with me in my purse. I have downloaded 80+ books and have only paid for one. I am also a certified Kindle cover maker. I would post pictures of the covers, but don't know how. If you would pm me I could show you pictures. But, back to the Kindle. You cannot go wrong. Just my opinion.

I have the Kindle w/keyboard...and I love it!
I got one for my Mom, daughter and SIL for Christmas! I take it with me whenever I leave the house!! :) |
I started out with the Kindle 2 and just recently upgraded to the Kindle Fire. I absolutely enjoy every bit of it. I was doing a lot of traveling and this really was the answer to everything. Not only did I have my books to read, but I was able to access the web when needed.

I get so many free books for Kindle I don't mind paying full price for a new E book I want. Do you know Amazon has a Kindle app for free everyday? My favorite game for the Kindle is http://www.amazon.com/The-Secret-of-...f=pd_sim_mas_1 You have to figure out the clues to escape the manor.
