I grow my own catnip. I give Kitty twice a week, just a little.

Glad you asked...I had no clue because I've never had a cat. Only doggies here. Thanks for asking.

When Reggie, male kitty, sees me going to the cupboard where it's stored. Or if I can't find him or Emmy I'll fluff the catnip bag until they come out of hiding.

Our cats know where it is stored and they "ask" for it. I also made them some toys with catnip inside they love those. Some kinds of catnip they ignore totally.
Lois, let me know when you find live catnip plants, as I want to buy some for the house, please.

My cat doesn't seem to particularly care for the catnip, but when I do bring it out my husband has a catnip fit, so I gave up. But she didn't seem to get all hyped up when I gave it to her. She doesn't go outside though - lost 2 outdoor cats to unexplained reasons within a week of each other, so my cats stay in. TJ doesn't seem to mind and she only goes to the door of our apt. and just looks out the door. As long as I'm in, she's in, and right beside me - part dog/part cat. Gotta love her.

I think it's interesting that a cat's response to catnip is actually genetically-determined. Some cats do not have the catnip "gene" and, therefore, have no response. I've not yet owned one that had no response whatsoever, but they're out there and it sounds like you've got them.

my tomcat is the same way--all i have to do is open the drawer and he is right there, looking up at me.
i have to be careful, he will grab it right out of my hand---
can't sneak it on his scratch pad! he knows!!!
their sense of smell is so much stronger than ours!

Mine only get their fix carefully sewed up inside of a catnip mouse. They roll around and rub on it like they are in love. When I clean under the furniture, I usually find all of them and then they are in a frenzy until they become hidden again. When I don't see them I know it's time to clean under the furniture again. lol.

My previous kitties did not respond to catnip. These two I have now love it.
