There's no real purpose for it. And, almost 20% of cats don't react to it. Its mildly stimulating and the cats enjoy it. Sort of like people having a drink or two.

Our cat would get 'stoned' on catnip. Nothing bothered kitty when she had some.
Had to be careful where we walked when she got a hold it. :)

Neither one of mine are interested in Catnip. Only one we've had over the years was affected by it.

Mine go crazy for the fresh stuff out of the garden more than the dried stuff from the store. Just be careful the stuff spreads everywhere!!


A weak tea of catnip is great for colic in babies.

they say not to let them have it to often cause it won't have much effect cause they become to use to it. some cats could care less about it. once a week is good. i usually need it more in the winter when they are cranky and fussy with each other. it calm them down after eating and rolling in it.i put it in a box or their post i also have a cat cd they like that works. we are down to 4 now but we did have 12 and had to figure something out when they were young.

Depends on the cat. My last cat didn't touch it. My sons cat will put is head in the jar to get more. I don't know if their is a medical reason to not give it to cats.

I have never been able to find live plants so we have a large jar of very old catnip. About once a year or so, when my son is home, we pour a little on a rug runner for our cat to enjoy. She does not like it nearly as much as our other cats used to, but she does roll around and rub and play a little which amuses my son. Yes, she makes a mess too but I leave it for a good while and then vacuum everything up. The old dried stuff is not very potent.

We always had it growing by our barn. If I could go all the way back to New York State it would still be there. Maybe sometime I will find a live plant at a nursery.

Mine aren't turned on to catnip. But let us brush our teeth with peppermint or eat some Peppermint patties, one of our cats goes nuts. :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

My boy loves it but he gets really calmed down by it. I give him a toy with catnip when I think about it and he just lays down and holds it.

The first time I gave my Siamese catnip, he got so excited he wet all over himself and floor.
