We were burglerized early this a.m. Bikes stolen from the garage (how the heck did they get the garage door UP??) Went thru our car (no $$-ha ha on them!) They did come into the kitchen (while we were sleeping! the NERVE) and there was my purse in plain sight. BYE BYE purse... Police found it about an hour after we reported. Thankfully all was there except for several hundred dollars..... Moral: keeping my purse in my closet, never carrying cash again, leaving the check books @ home unless I KNOW I'll need them, making copies of all important things (DL, CC #'s, anything that would need to be replaced), putting dead bolts on man door from garage to kitchen and man door from outside to garage, locking the car IN the closed garage and not leaving anything of value in sight. Funny tho! my laptop, 2 cell phones, 2 digital cameras, a VHF radio and a digital GPS were sitting right NEXT to my purse... They have since been moved to another room, out of sight. I am sooooo glad to have my purse contents back but I WILL find out who did this. Police seem to think it was kids. We live in a gated village with 24 hour guard service. So, burglers must LIVE in the villaage cause there is NO WAY anyone can get in without the guards knowing... Be careful with your valuables....

The nerve! Sorry this happened to you. I always made fun of my hubby for locking the car in a locked garage. He always makes sure the garage/dining room door is locked. I call it fort knox. I hate it when he is right. ;)

We were robbed by our neighbors son. Yea, know what your thinking... Teenage delinquent. No, he was 36 at the time.

I wouldn't have thought to put a deadbolt on the garage/house door. Would think with the garage shut, the house would be safe.
Sorry this happened to you. for me it wasn't the stuff they stole, it was my sense of security. Knowing someone was in my house, and there was nothing I could do about it. I was jumpy for a while.
don't put off adding those security features. Our guy came right back 3 days later, but couldn't get in the second time.

so glad you're okay. When I was growing up, my mom always kept her purse in her bedroom when we were in the house. Now I understand why!

I have heard about locking the car inside a garage and securing the door leading into the house from the garage, though it's a good reminder to hear again for whenever I'm living in a place with a garage. For now, I'm in a town house and have off street parking just below my bedroom window, though I admit I don't always lock my car (but I don't usually leave anything in it).

I always take my purse to my bedroom at night when I go to bed, especially if I know there is money in it. My sons are always giving me a hard time because even with 4 dogs I keep the front door locked when home alone. I told them have you never heard of home invasions, why make it easy for them.

Surveillance cameras everywhere. There are a lot of good ones on the market nowadays. And what about nanny cams in the garage and inside entrance doors?

I was broken into about 1 1/2 years ago when my house was in final stage of construction. They emptied all my packing boxes and took anything of value. Then a few months later I was having some furniture delivered and had left my purse on kitchen counter. Later that night I was at the store and realized I had 200.00 missing. I called the furniture store to report this but they did not do anything. Never bought anything from them since. Since I am very rural, I have hidden security cameras so if I do get robbed again I may not stop them but I will know who it is. I also bought a shot gun and took lessons on using it, and my German Shepherd is now all grown up.

Getting into garages is quite easy and takes 6 seconds. The bad guy simply takes a wire coat hanger, maneuvers it between the door and the flange trim, hooks it on the emergency release and pulls.

Put a deadbolt on the man door going from the house to the garage. Also - NEVER leave your garage door opener inside your car. A friend of mine had her car broken into - the thief stole both her opener and her registration (which had her address) and burgled her house while she was at work.

They would have had a very rude awakening if they came in my house. The dog would have torn them to ribbons. She can hear a the slightest noise and be up and at it with her hair raised up like a razor backed hog. She's as fast as lightening too! Sounds like someone was looking for cash to buy God knows what and didn't want to bother with trying to sell stuff. PUNKS!

Thanks for the extra tips! I will now carry the garage opener in my purse which will be kept in my bedroom. YES! I am a little jumpy today since DH had to go to town for a few hours. Think I'll go get the mace out of the motor home... OH! Mesa AZ police are recommending keeping wasp spray @ your entry doors so deter unwanted humans. It sprays @ least 30 feet and is ACCURATE..... I didn't know abt the coat hanger trick. Thanks!

I glad you all are as good as can be expected after what you lost. With the jobless rate as high as it is were hearing more and more about theft we didn't hear about before.
In Austin several places with the cluster mail boxes have had mail stolen. gift card and birthday card for there kids.
More secure boxes are on order but there is a waiting list for the new boxes.
This has happen in several high end subdivision.
Record all the important information to a CD or thumb drive
so when they take it to a pawn shop you have proof it was your they took.
My sister was able to get her ring back that was stolen by one of her daughter friends.
I hope they are able to catch the kids that did this to you.

We suffered a robbery many years ago and I still remember that sense of not feeling secure in my own home. Thank God you are all okay. We have all steel doors with best locks and security glass doors as well. I don't like opening my door and having whoever right there in my face. DH laughs bc I keep my car locked in the garage as well; but I've heard too many stories. All you can do is make your home as difficult s possible to get into. Hugs

My car was broken into, with me sleeping not ten feet away. I felt so violated! Cops may be good at taking care of paperwork, but a shotgun or big dog goes much further towards taking care of safety. Sorry this happened to you.

Scary! I'm so glad you and your family are safe. This is happening much more outside of the city and town now. Our neighborhood cars were ransacked a few months ago. We live in a one way in one way out addition and all the houses have 1/4 mile or longer drive ways so it's not like someone just passes by each home. Most leave the cars out of the garage and unlocked, we did. The police caught the jerk who did this after one man happen to see a person walking down his driveway and he watched him go in his car and then followed behind him while calling the police.

Sorry to here that. Glad everyone is ok! That is scary, to have someone in your house while you are asleep. What make people think the can just violate another human like that? I would like to know how they got the garage door open also. I hope you do find out who did this.

Someone went into my garage a while back, got a few CDs and that is about it. I don't even keep my garage door opener in the car. My kitchen door was open, but they did not come in, that would have been really scary. Glad to hear you and your family are ok.

it is scary when something like that happens. My daughter had her car stolen outside our gate just in a matter of minutes.
She was also hi-jacked whilst waiting for the robot to turn green.... They broke her front window, and she had the quick sense to just accelerate and move away. Her toddler was in the back and she was pregnant....
I had all my grocery stolen from my car just before Easter, whilst I was about 10 metres away watching hockey and looking at the car everynow and then.....they broke the front door lock,(the side I could not see!!) got through the back door, and then into the boot... No fingerprints.....
Feel lucky as at least my car was still there..
My friend and her husband had pistols pointing at them in their room... the burglars fired a shot, fortunately it missed both of them...
So I can really understand what you are going through. You feel violated....

I just don't understand the mind of a thief. That & computer hackers. Why WHY WHY do something like this? Here is this wonderful world that will offer you almost anything if you apply yourself. Just don't get it

We changed home ins. New co told us about the garage door coat hangar trick. We were told to take the rope off so the trick won't work. We were told of latches similar to hinges to install on every door. You vary the location so if they break glass, reach in to unlock door, they won't find the latch/hinge. Door will not open even if it is unlocked. We put them on all 3 entry doors-yes, even to the garage. We were told not to use the tiny screws included, but use long screws.
So sorry this happened to you. Very scary. We lock our bedroom door at night to hopefully slow someone down if they try to come after us in our sleep. No dogs at this time.

Our security system will go off if entry by door, window, roof, or garage unless the code is used. We don't have any stickers or signs saying the system we have is installed. We use the stickers from a security system we don't have.

That's awful!!! Do you have a dog? (Just curious 'cuz a cop once told me that while a dog may not stop some burglars, if you got some "crackhead" looking to get in & out quickly, they won't mess with a house that has a dog)

I do as my Mom always didand still does with her purse...every night, it goes under the head of my bed on my side...in order to get it, they'd have to go through me...I am over 200 lbs, and really not a happy camper if someone woke me up...lol

do you have a automatic garage door opener? somebody can try to use theirs as they go by, the waves from them can be the same, it happened to us and our neighbors, you need to change the code,

When going away on vacation or when you know that you have no need to open the garage door...we inserted a long nail spike in the door mechanism so that the door can't go up. We don't use our garage except for lawn tools, etc. since my van is too big. So this nail is inplace all the time.

So sorry this happened, I certainly know the feeling from experience. We have since installed an alarm system, and I do feel much better with it.

I am so sorry this happened! What nerve! This past weekend someone was just telling me that we should lock the door from the garage to the house because thieves know how to open a garage door. I have no idea how they do that.

In this society today it is very scary!

UPDATE! I called the guard shack to see if our OPEN garage door had been written a report. Reports had already been taken to the office. BUT - he DID say there were a lot of burglery's in the entire village. OUr village has abt 1200 homes..... now I am wondering if it was adults but why take the bikes m- THAT is KID stuff!!! OH Well My DH is installing dead bolts as I type..... Thanks for all your words of wisdom.... I appreciate your concern.....

When we moved into our new home. We were burglarized while we were at work. I guess I made it easy for them all my moving boxes were neatly labeled, Camera Equip, Hummels,
good glassware, etc. duh!

Oh man! I am glad that you two are ok. I hate when I hear something like this. We have to buy stuff they should to. Hope the catch the kids that did this.
