Actually, that is a Thanksgiving cactus and it is right on schedule. There are three similar cacti -- Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. There blooming cycles are based on daylight hours. Each is different in appearance, and the flowers also vary in appearance.

I have one that is blooming also. It has about 30 blooms and lots more about to pop open. I have two others that have not started to bloom. They are about 75 years old and had belonged to my husband's mother. I remember her breaking off a chunk and give to about anyone who came into her house.

I have 2, a white and a dark pink, both blooming right now. They are on the floor beside a low window under the eaves. I was surprised to see a honey-like nectar had dropped from the white flowers onto the floor.
I don't do anything special to them, or to my amaryllis, and they just bloom whenever they want. |

I've started stopped calling mine a "Christmas" cactus because over the years it has changed to blooming whenever it likes although it frequently blooms near a holiday such as Christmas, Easter or Thanksgiving. I especially like when it blooms after Christmas during the winter months as it gives such a lovely display of color in the dull months.

Beautiful bloom. My Christmas cactus is budding now and I just love the beautiful blooms that appear.

I just read about this recently in the garden section of a magazine-and it showed the leaves of each and the difference is something with the width and length of the leaves--but I can't remember which was which. My two are probably Thanksgiving ones cause I think they will be blooming in the next 2-3 weeks.
