I travel a lot for business and I have black luggage. I tie colored cloth ribbons on mine and I have a red wrap on the handles. I never have a problem finding my luggage. As for locks, I don't think they are very helpful. Anyone at the airport could get a TSA key and open them. Just make sure there are no valuables in your luggage. Pack your jewelry and electronics in a carryon bag - do NOT check that bag. Thieves aren't really interested in your clothes.

As for things to do on the plane, ebooks and iPods are wonderful. Also make sure you bring an eye cover and ear plugs.

You could tie a big bright piece of fabric on the handle --- so you KNOW that's your luggage when it comes off the turntable.

Do NOT put your name and address on the label thing on the luggage. Too easy for someone to see it and know you're going to be gone for a long time. Just put your name and phone #.....inside you can put your address -- but even then, I wouldn't put it in there.

My Uncle (retired United Airlines empoyee) told us to put our travel itinerary written out on copy paper and placed inside on top of our stuff and run a piece of packing tape over top. If your tags get ripped off, and they will some day, the employees will be able to find you. Also put your final destination accommadations for the same reason. Also, if someone does go thru your lugguge (and they do), you can tell as soon as you open your luggage.

Travel in light weight clothes ( I LOVE knit capris with matching zippered hoodies...I put an extra tshirt in my carryon...just in case I spill on my shirt) NO tie shoes, put a pair of ballet style slippers in your carry on...flight get cold and hot....and you can never tell about airports and air conditioning!

TAKE WASHCLOTHES (Lots of foreign countries don't use them like us Americans)....after a 14 hr flight...it feels so good to wash your face, neck...and you will look fresh for the next part of your journey!

Pick up a small notebook to carry with you at all times....its amazing how many times you will think "I should have written that down" or remembering things about your trip...cities, people.....

Before each family vacation I get a roll of 2 inch wide ribbon to wrap around handles of luggage, carry ons and purses....I got shamrocks for our trip to Ireland! Beach umbrellas went to Jamaica last spring!

Locks...not much good if the guys in the back room have the master key! They can get into your luggage...and you may lose the key or forget the combo...and what are they going to take...your clothes????

Enjoy your trip...Australia is on my list!

ps....daughter just mentioned headphones (earbuds)....kids would have died without theirs on a lot of trips!

What I have done was use brightly colored ribbon (wider the better) tide to the handle. A friend came back from Hawaii and done this. They loved it, it helped make their luggage stand out.

Lived in Australia for a year as an exchange student a llloooong time ago, and return periodically. A few pointers....buy brightly colored ribbons and cut them about 16" long, and tie around your handle -- I use about a dozen, all neon colored -- your luggage will stand out for sure! Second - if you're going to be in that area through January, DON'T go into the ocean around stinger season...those are deadly. If you want to go scuba diving or snorkeling, take one of the boat tours out to one of the outlying islands to do that -- its a must, as the water is like bath water, and the experience is NOT to be missed! Also, if you're going to Sydney, before climbing into a bed, take the bed apart and shake the bedding, look around the corners and edges of baseboards, and under the bed for spiders. Within 50 miles of Sydney is the funnel web spider, and those are deadly. Just keep an eye out for those and take apart the bedding each night and you'll be fine. Before you leave, eat bananas a day or two before and the day of leaving, and your feet and ankles won't retain water....also get up every couple of hours and walk around so you don't have a problem with clots. There are folks that don't get up hardly at all and they are taking a risk. Enjoy Cairns - the rainforest, ocean, scenary is breathtaking!! Downtown Cairns has some great restaurants where you can try a variety of foods, like buffalo, kangaroo, barramundi (hope I spelled it right, its delicious!) and other treats in a platter -- we loved it. Don't put anything of value in your bags or it could disappear - keep it in your carry on luggage with any meds, and one change of clothes in case luggage takes the long route! I LOVE Australia - its wonderful!!

Snorkling is apart of our Bridging Cultures program, and I can't wait for that. I think there is a day of exploration too before heading down to Robina Gold Coast. I'm very excited! And I'll keep a lookout for spiders! Thank you!!!

Same as others have said...bright ribbon on the handles. I have a bright purple and bright green...its stands out..lol.

By the way...I just noticed your signature (Australia in the Fall)...It will be your Fall (we call it Autumn here) but it will be our Spring when you're here :) Still a lovely time but starting to warm up...and the humidity won't be too far away :(

I took 3 torn scraps of fabric in nice bright pretty greens and purples and braided it up and tied on the handle of my suit cases. I can spot them from across the room!!!

Oh, I know! :D I'm used to humidity, we have a lot of it where I live. I can't wait!

I'm currently trying to figure out if I should get a rail pass so that I can go to Sydney and Melbourne and few other places on the the pass. I just need to figure out if I can afford places to stay.

I'm not sure that you can rail to Sydney or Melbourne from here...not that I've heard anyway. Everyone here flies to Sydney and Melbourne...you can get cheap flights at times. Otherwise, you can probably bus but that would be a long trip
