can i ask what it was? mine is onalee, my mom says her mom named her that and her dad couldnt pronounce it, so he told everyone it was shirley. thats the one they kept. i always liked having a different name. i actually use it without my last name since i never here "onalee who"?.

Boscobd 01-16-2011 07:20 PM

First name. Whan I got married, I took the first letter of my maiden name as my middle name as an initial only, so I don't really have a middle name anymore.

quiltgrammyt2 01-16-2011 07:21 PM

First name, but most of my family(parents, aunts and cousins) call me by both first and second.

dpparris 01-16-2011 07:22 PM

Debbie - short for Deborah.

My mother would always say Deborah Diane when she wanted to get my attention. Well when I was about 20 I got a copy of my birth certificate and my name is Deborah Dianna on it. My mom just say well they got it wrong.

First name. But since I'm named for my maternal grandma, and so is the first girl in all of my aunt/uncle's families, there are a lot of us at a family get together.
So , when we are in the midst of the larger family, we all get called by first and second name, sometimes followed by "from" our parents name.
So I'm Teresa Jane "from" Art and Nel whereas my cousin is
Teresa Lynn "from" Art and Renny (We HAD to end up with three uncle ART's in the mix too)

G-Maw Wilda 01-16-2011 09:35 PM

I go by my first name:Wilda, but I sign my name with first, maiden name, last name, the only people that call me by my first and middle name are the older cousins: Wilda Ruth.
I was going to be named after my father, Wilburn James but I was a girl so I got named Wilda. It is a unique name, there are not very many with this name around.

G-Maw Wilda

You are unique! I have never known a Wilda, but my late mother's name was Wilma. She was named after her mother, who was Wilhelmina (very Dutch). Grandmother went by Billie, which I always thought odd. My mother never liked her name either. The two of them named me Penelope, but when I am called that, I know it is someone who doesn't know me at all. All my friends and family know me as Penny. Grandmother said "you can't call a grown woman Penny", but she did until the day she died!
No one ever uses my middle name, Gwynne.

marthe brault-hunt 01-17-2011 03:46 AM

I was baptized Marie Marthe Genevieve Annette Alberte. I do insist on being called Marthe not Martha. In Quebec province, your maiden name is your legal name, you keep it even if you married. Kids can have both parents surname. My only problem is when they ask me my mother maiden name which is also Brault .The next sentence is always I ask you your mother maiden name.

Edie 01-17-2011 04:10 AM

I was born Edith Clara (old names - long ago - first name after my aunt, middle name after my grandmother. As I got older, I didn't like the name Edith, or for that matter, Clara. So I just signed everything Edie Clare except for certain legal papers, (marriage license, deed to our home, little stuff like that. If anyone calls me Edith, I just say Edie! I love the name Edie Clare. My husband calls me Ede. I love that too, but only he can call me that. It is a deep term of endearment. My uncle used to call my Aunt Ede and so with my husband it stuck. No one else calls me that! And that is how it is! A name is pretty darned important to a person and if one has to live with it, it better sit good with them, right? The little boy across the alley calls me Grandma Edie, my grandkids call me Grandma and our son calls me Mom. Three best names in the book! Edie

newjeepgreen 01-17-2011 04:24 AM

First Name. Because there were five girls before me and my Mum thought I would have to be a boy so I was being called (David) for her brother in Australia. Hence Vida which is the feminine of David. Have had a few problems with prouncing it but like all things you get used to it.

My first name, sometimes Suzanne, sometimes Sue, mostly Grannie. My son-in-law calls me Grannie.

Anne Marie 01-17-2011 05:19 AM

Both - the two names are actually my first name and not a middle name (??) I have no middle name at least that is what my mom told me.

nycquilter 01-17-2011 05:30 AM

I go by my first name--first and middle together sound like I"m from the deep south-no offense intended but I'm a born and bred NY-er! My DD goes by her middle name. In 3rd grade she decided she disliked her first name (Kristiana) and went with Joy. She is a Joy, too, so it fits. Last year, after graduating college, she wrote me a letter, told me she was sorry if she hurt my feelings, thinks Kristiana is beautiful. She is still my number one Joy!

I go by my first, but when in high school I had a friend whose name was Candice Kay Lynn, so I wanted to change my name to Mary Lynn Kay. That way I wouldn't have to correct everyone when they spelled my name Marilyn.

There was a girl in my hometown named Wilda Jane. She was an airline stewardess back in the days when they had to be a nurse. A long time ago!

sewing4kix 01-17-2011 05:57 AM

I use my first because it is unusual (Harmony) but also will use my middle if I want to blend in :)

Homespun 01-17-2011 06:00 AM

First name only

moonrise 01-17-2011 06:11 AM

Well, I was named Melissa Lynn.

Everybody calls me Lisa.

My immediate family (husband, mom, sister, dad) all call me Dewey. My dad gave me that nickname when I was in high school. I have no idea why. HE doesn't even know why. But it somehow fits ... and it stuck. :-D

Karyn 01-17-2011 06:13 AM

I go by my middle name, hated my first name when I was growing up (Ava) but now I love it. My Dads name was Arley and he wanted to name me Arlene, that was ok with my Mom until she found out that was an old girlfriends name. lol

damaquilts 01-17-2011 08:37 AM

I grew up being called by my middle name Dawn. I hated that name with a passion. So when I finally moved away from family and NJ I used my first name. Sheila.Liked it much better. Only my stepmother calls me Dawn now.Dawn doesn't bother me anymore especially since it was also used as my granddaughters middle name. Camdelyn Dawn. It's just not me anymore.

jolo 01-17-2011 08:49 AM

Middle name due to the fact no one says my first correctly, even tho I love it.

Dix 01-17-2011 08:55 AM

My mom (76 years ago) and her best cousin/friend both were pregnant and liked the name Dixie Ann. They decided which ever delivered first got to use the name. She was born 3 weeks before me so she got the name. My name is Dixie Colleen, given to me by my German pgm. I love my middle name, but was only used in my hometown when we were growing up. She was always called Dixie Ann. She died 10 years from breast cancer, and I will always miss my friend!

Parrothead 01-17-2011 09:15 AM

I have one of those wonderful? southern double names! Mary Sue. My Daddy always called me Sue, Susie or SusieQ but Mother and her family called me Mary Sue. When I went to school, the teacher called "Mary" and I didn't answer so I got in trouble. No one had ever called me "Mary". I then decided I would be Sue. Several years ago I started using the two names without a space. That works for doctor offices, etc. Like the other Sue, I hate that song, A Boy Named Sue. People do not believe my name is just Sue and want to use Susan or Suzanne. Both of my names are family names. When I was born I had an Aunt Mary, a Great-Aunt Mary and a Great-Great Aunt Mary. My sister had all boys so it stopped. (They are all glad!) The Sue is for my GreatGrandmother who was a quilter. The problem with Sue is there are so many of them!! Every place I have worked there has been 2-5 of us. So I wanted my girls to have unique names. Denise (Denni), Dynell, Dalene and Denette. Dynell is pronounced with the first syllable like Denise. Dalene is the end of Mary Magdalene (named after a friend of my Aunts).

cafegold2 01-17-2011 10:10 AM

I was the sixth first daughter named Margaret. We all have/had a different middle name. My daughter is the seventh. She has three boys and so it ends. I go by the Irish nickname Peggy.

BettyGee 01-17-2011 10:28 AM

First name is Elizabeth, was called Betty Anne from childhood and now it is just Betty. Hated Elizabeth when I was a kid and now I rather wish I'd used it.

When in the recovery room, after surgery, they keep calling out "Elizabeth, cough." or "Wake up Elizabeth." I always wondered who they were talking to.

Zephyr 01-17-2011 11:05 AM

My first name is Kathleen, but very few people call me Kathleen. I have always been called Kathy. My
Dad's silver baby cup had Keith engraved on it and several years before he passed away he had an engrave change Keith to Kathleen.
