We watched The Horse Whisperer tonight. I had forgotten what an awesome movie that is!

Mkotch 03-27-2020 02:08 AM

We just watched "Empire Falls" (2005) on Prime the last couple of nights. It stars Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, and Ed Harris. Quite good!

OneBusyGranny 03-27-2020 04:14 AM

I recently discovered Wild Fire tv series(Amazon Prime) with Dennis Weaver. It was on tv back 2003-2005 until his death. If you love horses ,this one is awesome!

janiebakes 03-27-2020 11:05 AM

Sweet Land, a movie on Amazon Prime about a mail order bride coming to Minnesota in 1920. Olaf, the groom to be thought she was Norwegian but she turns out to be German and is not welcomed at first by the community. Based on the book, A Gravestone Made of Wheat.

sewbizgirl 03-27-2020 12:45 PM

Janie, I loved Sweet Land. You're right, it's a good one!

SusieQOH 03-27-2020 03:40 PM

We just saw Sweet Land a few weeks ago. Loved it!!

The Harry Potter series...
Anne of Green Gables

SusieQOH 03-28-2020 05:20 AM

I know there are several Anne of Green Gables but after watching the Canadian version about a million times that's the one I watch. Nobody can be Marilla like Colleen Dewhurst. The whole cast is amazing.
I heard Anne with an E was good though. I'm going to check that one.
We watched The Secret LIfe of Bees last night- very good. I read the book about 10 years ago and loved it.

I've never read or seen Harry Potter, if you can believe it! Must try.

Iceblossom 03-28-2020 05:32 AM

SusieQOH -- Go ahead and give Harry Potter a try! I know, sometimes it's hard to understand all the hype/or believe that something could live up to that much hype but they are good books/stories/characters and the movies are good too. Fans always going to quibble about things, but I think it's fun to recognize some of the minor characters in scenes where they are there but not otherwise mentioned. High production values. Great casting. It's the 20th anniversary (oh my goodness!) and they are on heavy rotation on cable right now but I prefer the commercial free options.

In the "fans are going to quibble" side of things, I loved the Lord of the Rings movies but was annoyed beyond belief of the amount of "creativity" that went into making the Hobbit into a multi-part movie.

I am behind a season or two of Game of Thrones so no spoilers please! But I was recommending the books long before the series and I love the casting of that.

I think one of the best book adaptations of all time is Gone with the Wind -- even though it left out that Scarlett had a child by every man she was married to! There are pros and cons and negatives to be said, but GWTW is still my choice for the Great American Novel.

SusieQOH 03-28-2020 06:11 AM

The only reason I've never seen or read Harry Potter is because I'm not into that genre. I'm sure it's very good.
I don't "do" science fiction, fantasy, etc.
My kids loved Star Wars but I could never get into it, even though I sat there watching it. lol
I think my brain capacity is limited haha

IceBlossom- every single thing you mentioned is an example of something I've never seen or read, with the exception of Gone with the Wind. haha! That fantasy stuff just doesn't register!

SusieQOH 03-28-2020 06:16 AM

Hmmm. the great American novel. That would have to be To Kill a Mockingbird (my op only of course!)

Iceblossom 03-28-2020 06:41 AM

And SusieQOH, it is another superb movie adaptation!

There was a fun countdown last summer on PBS of the Great American Read and it was chosen as number 1 as well. For those of us that love books, that was a fun countdown and looks into what else might we be reading...

Although you always lose a lot of the little stuff, I found I was quite happy with waiting for the movies of the John Gresham novels. They were never quite as satisfying if I had read the book first, but were just fine as a movie and then more in the books.

edit: Some people don't realize that Jurassic Park was a novel first. I was really enjoying the movie but I had drunk too much soda and was just dying waiting for a pivotal scene. Well, turned out it was a pivotal scene in the book but not the movie and never happened but I lasted out the entire show.

SusieQOH 03-31-2020 04:54 AM

Thanks to whoever suggested The Horse Whisperer. It was so good! But I'm peeved at having to rent it when I already have Amazon Prime. Geezzzzzz.....
I love movies that have horses in them.

So many good movies listed here! I recently re-watched Hidden Figures … amazing movie. The Upside is another one that wasn't at all what I expected but enjoyed it. I love movies about human kindness. Churchill, Return to Pooh's corner was good too. A beautiful day in the neighborhood was amazing.

My wife and I have been binge watching “Designated Survivor” for the last three days on Netflix. Stars a Kiefer Sutherland as a cabinet member who does not attend the State of the Union address in case of disaster. After a terrorist attack which wipes out most of the government, he becomes POTUS. It has been surprisingly good.

craftiladi 04-05-2020 08:17 AM

We watched The Ten Commandments last night. My husband shared that he remembered driving with his family from San Diego to Los Angeles to see this in the theater, we are both in our 60's so years that was a while ago lol

Iceblossom 04-05-2020 09:45 AM

Hubby works overtime on alternate weekends last week was work week this week is home, we've been finding a few things in the free movies section of our Comcast Cable.

Yesterday afternoon it was Pixels, an Adam Sandler comedy. Not the best movie ever but gamers are my peeps and I spent quite a bit of time in arcades myself. I was a Q*bert master!

Then for something different in the evening, the recent Kenneth Branagh's version of Murder on the Orient Express.

I probably won't watch every single one but it's a great list to start on.

SuzzyQ 04-17-2020 03:45 AM

I've watched all the Star Trek series except Discovery - saw part of one of the early episodes and just can't get into it. My DD assures me it gets better after the time leap(?) - but I will wait that out for now.
I have DVDs of most of the Star Trek movies to watch but I also have Netflix...
Just watched "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and I've PVR'd "Prince Caspian" - never read the books so that might happen.
Watched episodes of "Mork & Mindy" - what a talented man Robin Williams was. Putting the DVDs of the series on my Christmas list.
My kids gave me "The Flintstones" tv series on DVD a couple of Christmas' ago - love that one and got my grandkids into it. I'm looking for the Christmas specials on DVD now - I have the one based on the Christmas Carol - but I know there are couple more.
Working my way thru "The Crown" and really enjoying the older movies that VISION TV is resurfacing. Watched "The King & I" and "Jailhouse Rock" (when Elvis could act)
But also reading - mostly romance novels because they are a fast read. Mostly I'd rather be quilting :)

SusieQOH 04-18-2020 05:10 AM

We watched Little Women last night on Prime. Nice adaptation of that wonderful book.
