Movie Suggestions

During our time of confinement at home, many of us will take to our couches more than usual. It would be great to compile a list of our favorite movies to share with each other. I will start with one that hubby and I stumbled across last night... which turned out to be a gem!
Poms with Diane Keaton. A lady decides to sell her home of 45 years and move into a senior living community. She doesn't fit into any of their existing clubs, so she starts her own cheerleading club. I won't tell any more but the movie is delightful.

tranum 03-21-2020 09:53 AM

Lion - true story of little fella who gets separated from family in India I believe
Peanut Butter Falcon - true story of Downs Syndrome guy who runs away has adventure
Good Girls - 2 seasons Netflix. 3 friends who need $ for various reasons. They get in deep.
Where the Money Is. (Paul Newman)
Downton Abbey. 6 seasons
Wish Man - true story of Make a Wish organization
Virgin River - season 1
Harry & Snowman - true horse story
Philomena - true story woman searches for child she gave up
Dolores Claiborne
Mrs Lambert Remembers Love
Keeping Up With the Joneses - ongoing story of Ranch life (Australia, I think)
The Ron Clark Story - teacher experience
Aftermath - Arnold Schwarzenegger loses family in plane crash - true

i Keep a list but I’ve got to get better adding notes to myself
Please ad a short note if you post movie names, it helps.

SBG- what a great idea!!!
I love movies as well but lately I've been overdosing on gangsters: The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire.
We binged on those entire series this winter!
I need something lighter haha. So thanks!!!
Love Downton Abbey, Doc Martin, Madmen. I will probably revisit them but want some new suggestions.

Lisa, no matter how many times I watch Lonesome Dove it's a sob-fest! Omg that is such a wonderful movie!!!!!!!
I read the book years before the movie and they picked the perfect actors for that movie.

tallchick 03-21-2020 03:12 PM

SuziqOH- I agree it does the same to me as well! I do watch it when I need a good cry, and yes, the entire cast is perfection! they really did an amazing job! I too read the book and have the audiobook series too.

Jingle 03-21-2020 03:28 PM

We like anger management
what about Bob
Christmas vacation
weekend at bernies

About anything funny. Serious or scary movies are not for me. Actually I don't sit and watch TV. I haven't been to a movie theater since ET came out.

I do play several childish computer games.

Tartan 03-21-2020 04:22 PM

All the Indiana Jones movies are good for escapism.

wesing 03-21-2020 04:40 PM

The Count of Monte Cristo

SusieQOH 03-21-2020 06:56 PM

If you want to laugh My Cousin Vinny is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. We watch that a lot when the kids are home.
It's a family favorite.
I've often wondered though, what Southerners thought of that movie. I'm Italian so I "get" the Italian part so well.
I'm going to rewatch The Help soon. Love that one!

Another favorite of mine is Places in the Heart- Sally Field and an awesome cast. John Malkovich, Danny Glover, Ed Harris,Lindsay Crouse, Amy Madigan, it's wonderful.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. We watched one that was really good last night, but when we DVR'd it, there was a storm going on so part of it didn't record. We are recording a later showing now. It's called Green Book and stars Viggo Mortenson (50 lbs heavier than LOTR days) and the character he portrays is excellent. Some of his best acting. Can't wait to see the ending!

sewingpup 03-22-2020 10:25 AM

umm.....I have been thinking of re-watching…."Buffy the Vampire Slaughter" and "Charmed" We need some heroines now!

Also Miss Congeniality or actually just about anything with Sandra Bullock in it . Mama Mia, The Devil wears Prada...
I also can listen to or read books downloaded from local library if you have a library card you could check if that is available in your area.....I love listening to a book while stitching.....

Loved Green Book!!! Viggo Mortenson plays an Italian very convincingly.
Really good movie.

MicheleC 03-22-2020 10:52 AM

What a great thread! There are some good suggestions on here. I absolutely second the suggestion of My Cousin Vinny.
DH and I recently watched Harriet, which was excellent. Midway was also very good.
If you are a fan of action movies, Netflix recently released Spenser Confidential which was fun to watch.
Personally, I like series more than movies.
The Netflix/Marvel series are fun to watch, particularly Jessica Jones and Daredevil.
Criminal Minds
Deadwood
Better Call Saul
The Big Bang Theory
Young Sheldon
Supernatural
The Walking Dead
I know they don’t appeal to everyone but they are fun to watch.

SusieQOH 03-23-2020 05:53 AM

Michele, We started Better Call Saul- my sister recommended it but I'm not really liking it. Does it get better????
I just ordered The Secret Life of Bees on Ebay. Looks like a good one. I loved the book.

costumegirl 03-23-2020 06:59 AM

Thank you Sewbizgirl for the suggestion of - watched it last night - pace is quick, fun and uplifting!!

Susie - I am currently on the second season. I am enjoying it, but it does start a bit slow. If you’ve watched Breaking Bad, there is more context. In my opinion, “Slippin’ Jimmy’s” story is not as interesting as the bald guy’s (I forget his name at the moment.) I would certainly say that it’s not for everyone, though.

Michele- Thanks for your reply. Saw Breaking Bad a couple of years ago. It was good but I had to turn my head a lot and let my husband tell me when I can look again lol. I have trouble with really graphic violence most of the time.I guess Better Call Saul is like a prequel? I'm going to give it a go. My sister raves about it.

Boardwalk Empire, while violent is fantastic!! We binged on that from start to finish. The acting is superb and the setting is really interesting ( the 1920's)

Rennie 03-23-2020 04:36 PM

Can recommend Play It Again with Andy Griffith and Doris Roberts...a comedy.

Really good movie.

Saw Viggo on Jimmy Kimmel last year--he said he "auditioned" for the part by going to dinner with the writer (his character's actual son) with the family. Viggo said he sat down with about 14 people, all Italian-American and they had a salad & lobster, which he thought was great and the whole dinner--then course after course came out and all the food was outstanding. He said he left, drove his car around the block and parked and had to unbutton/zip his pants cause he was in food agony. That is where he got the call that he had the part--the family liked him!. Great movie!

We just watched on Amazon Prime a goody for those that like BBC stuff--An Inspector Calls; Knives Out will probably be moving to the free Prime or Netflix soon as it's on Prime now for $6. Also, Call the Midwives new season starts soon. Hubs is liking Zoey, new comedy.

Our Souls at Night. (Robert Redford)

That's hilarious!! We just finished The Sopranos and that show made me so hungry!! All they did was eat!! ( when they weren't in hospitals or funeral parlors lol) And of course it was wonderful Italian food !!

Murphy224 03-24-2020 12:31 AM

This is a great thread, thanks for starting it. A few more:
Driving Miss Daisy
The Natural Robert Redford baseball movie
Second Hand Lions Michael Caine and Robert Duval I think
Heartburn Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson
As Good as It Get another Jack N movie
Mrs. Doubtfire Robin Williams
Hidden Figures
Untouchables Kevin Costner
Dances with Wolves
Planes Trains and Automobiles

I find that I really prefer the older movies since so many of the newer ones are so full of that "f" word that I just can't....
And will add My Cousin Vinny. I am a southerner born and raised and we thought that movie was hilarious. Just loved it myself. Marisa's rant about hunting and pants is one of the funniest scenes I have ever seen.
City Homocide is a police detective series set in Australia.
Justified is another series that ran 6 seasons and I didn't find it until I had Amazon Prime. It is an old FX series and although a lot of violence the characters are interesting and the storyline is excellent with some offbeat humor.

I loved this, too. It's based on a novel by Kent Haruf who's one of my favorite authors..

marybs 03-24-2020 03:28 AM

This is wonderful, thank you!

SusieQOH 03-24-2020 04:36 AM

Murphy- great movies you mentioned.
tranum- thanks, will check that one out.

Can anyone from the South comment on if My Cousin Vinny was offensive? Southerners were depicted
as rather slow and dimwitted but so were the Italians from New York so I hope it was evened out, so to speak. (Joe
Pesci was definitely not a lawyer you'd want to defend you!)
I laughed so much the first time that a woman sitting near my family stopped me after the movie and
said she had more fun hearing my son and I laugh than anything else lol. One of my other sons got
mad at us for laughing so loud haha!

Snooze2978 03-24-2020 06:55 AM

Well, I decided since Kenny Rogers just passed I'd pull all his movies out. Have all 4 of the Gambler series, Six Pack, Rio Diablo and Coward of the County. Then I'll probably hit all 20 of Danielle Steele movies (have her books too). I'm also watching as they come each Sunday of When Calls the Heart, When Hope Calls and the Outlander. Have their DVDs too so can go back and start from the beginning if I really get bored. Picked up Downtown Abbey's movie so watched the entire series before I watched it. Have a collection over 1500 DVDs so doubt I'll run out of movies to watch soon.

Oh fell in love with Downton Abbey-did you see the movie? I love that era, so I wish there were more series like Downton.

Little Lulu 03-24-2020 08:47 AM

From a suggestion on The Quilting Board, I watched the entire season (on Amazon Prime) The Royal. It is about a "cottage hospital" in England's countryside during the 60s. I think there were 8 seasons. I really enjoyed it - laughed and cried. When you watch Season one, just keep clicking next at the end of the segment. This way you can watch the entire series free. If not, they want you to pay for some seasons.

donac 03-24-2020 09:45 AM

I have to pull out Apollo 13. I used to watch it with my AP Calc classes after they took their exam. I haven't seen it since I retired 5 years ago. Next month is the 50th anniversary.

Iceblossom 03-24-2020 09:52 AM

For recent releases, I really liked Knives Out
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8946378/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

but then again, Clue is one of my guilty pleasures

Yes, I saw the movie. I loved it, however it was only 2 hours so they only had limited scenes for all the characters we've grown to love. I felt like I was visiting family lol.

JuneBillie 03-25-2020 02:50 PM

I watched a good movie last night. (Charlie and Me ). Another one is (Belle and Sebastian ). The first is about a little girl and her grandpa. The second is about a boy and a big dog he befriends. Both are excellent, and filled with many deeper life themes relevant to many.
